Bolton is a town in Greater Manchester in North West England. A former mill town, Bolton has been a production centre for textiles since Flemish weavers settled in the area in the 14th century, introducing a wool and cotton-weaving tradition.
Bolton was a 19th-century boomtown, and at its zenith in 1929 its 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works made it one of the largest and most productive centres of cotton spinning in the world. The British cotton industry declined sharply after the First World War, and by the 1980s cotton manufacture had virtually ceased in Bolton.
Close to the West Pennine Moors, Bolton is 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Manchester. It is surrounded by several smaller towns and villages that together form the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, of which Bolton is the administrative centre. Historically part of Lancashire, Bolton originated as a small settlement in the moorland known as Bolton le Moors. In the English Civil War, the town was a Parliamentarian outpost in a staunchly Royalist region, and as a result was stormed by 3,000 Royalist troops led by Prince Rupert of the Rhine in 1644. In what became known as the Bolton Massacre, 1,600 residents were killed and 700 were taken prisoner.
Football club Bolton Wanderers play home games at the Macron Stadium and the WBA World light-welterweight champion Amir Khan was born in the town. Cultural interests include the Octagon Theatre and the Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, as well as one of the earliest public libraries established after the Public Libraries Act 1850.

Riding from Horwich to Bolton via unicycle
Usually you can join Mill Lane not long after the first road, but as you can see today it was blocked by some sort of digger.
Over the Bolton Municipal golf coarse, to Lostock station, onto the Middle Brook canal/River Croal, riding alongside the train tracks. Had to low-gear it for the canal because it's far too rough!
Westburys Historical Oak Inn Stop The Demolition Now

Dear John I have included your pictures in this brief video
the pictures show that these buildings are worth saving and could be a
valuable asset in the urban landscape .
I am very concerned that these historic buildings, as my attached
images, may soon be demolished to make way for shoppers car parking
for a supermarket development. I observed the keys being handed over
to a demolition contractor on Monday. I attach the Wiltshire Council
planning permission for the supermarket development, which does not
seem to mention demolition, and a Wiltshire Council map of the site.
Amongst many anomalies, the development site is described as the
previous Oval Motors at 60-62 Warminster Road, whereas I believe that
the Oak inn and brewhouse buildings are at 76 Warminster Road.
However, the Wiltshire Council map shows both the motor showroom and
the Oak shaded grey as the same development site. I have spoken with
two Wiltshire Councillors, who, whilst vague on detail, were certain
that the Oak inn buildings are soon to be demolished to make way for
the supermarket and its shopper parking. They were insufficiently
concerned about the imminent loss of Westbury history and heritage.
The Oak inn and brewhouse buildings contain much from the 19th century
but I believe that the complex may date back to the 17th century or
earlier. There has been almost no publicity or background information
on the prospective demolition and the events leading to it. I found
out about the demolition intentions by chance and only very recently.
There seems to have been little local knowledge. On Monday, there was
an inspection, I suspect for the first time since the previous
commercial occupation, where I met Dorothy Treasure of Wiltshire
Buildings Record, copied on this email, who I believe had been invited
for a first and last look at the historic Oak inn and brewhouse
buildings before they are wiped away. Many aspects of this
prospective demolition are clearly wrong. I suspect that policy and
procedures have not been properly followed. The situation now
requires urgent attention if the old Oak buildings are to be saved.
