Hosmer Grove in Haleakela, Maui
While my brother trimmed trees in Kula, I took a few hours to run halfway up Haleakela to Hosmer Grove. In the 1800's settlers cleared the native ohi'a and koa. In order to stop erosion and to jump start a possible timber industry, Ralph Hosmer planted tree species from all over the world. Conditions at 6500 feet (2000 m) are pretty harsh, so only 13 species still survive today.
I love ranger led hikes! These people work for small pay and are looking out for wildlife and nature. They have a lot to teach us.
The music in the beginning is from the Joshua Kaye Quartet Live! album.

Visitor Safety Road to Hāna
Waikamoi Mile Marker 10 Road to Hana Maui Hawaii.
Lineal descendant and Heir, Napua Hueu, describes the Native Tenant Visitor Management Plan to enhance visitor safety and protect private properties along the Road to Hana. Hueu is a registered Resource Ranger under the Kingdom of the Hawaiian Islands and has undergone specialized training in effective visitor communication.
The Road to Hana on the island of Maui ranks among the most popular activities to do in Hawaii, second only to Waikiki. The lack of infrastructure and activities along the Hana Highway results in visitors trespassing and hiking (unprepared) into unmarked forest reserve spaces. Illegal parking, trespassing on private property, unlicensed commercial activity and commercial activity within sacred spaces are among the most frequented offenses seen along the Road to Hana, causing overcrowding, traffic hazards, lost hikers and even resulting in visitor fatalities. Over Tourism has resulted in droves of visitors who are unaware of the basic protocols in trekking the East Maui watershed. The new variation of Hawaii visitor has created much havoc for the ecosystem of East Maui which provides the majority of water for the entire island of Maui's general consumption. Protecting sacred sites and watersheds are critical to ensure island water needs are met. Educating visitors and providing the opportunity for Native Intelligence consultation is important.
This visitor safety component is part of the Crown Lands Management which assumes management of the East Maui Watershed on January 1st, 2010. This Native Tenant initiative coincides with the group's Ahupua'a Restoration Project and Native Tenant Farm Plan. Stay tuned for updated information and visit KuaHawaii.com for more details. Please email aloha@kuahawaii.com with any questions.
These initiatives are meant to inspire other royal patent holders, families and communities to stand up and manage their sacred sites that may be under intrusion by foreign visitors and transient residents who have failed to learn the rightful history and culture of the place they visit.

Hoapili Trail (King’s Highway), Maui
Hoapili Trail (King’s Highway), Maui
This is a great introductory volcanic walk, and chance to picnic at the attractively secluded Kanaio beach. Sitting in the lee of the massive shield volcano Haleakalā the desolate southeast is dry an arid, and dominated by volcanism.
The ancient King’s Highway (Hoapili Trail) used to circumnavigate Maui. The existing trail was built by former Governor Hoapili (1824-1840) and is part of a protected historic site. This reasonably easy 4 mile/ 6.5 km walk from Keoneʻoʻio Bay (La Perouse Bay) to the secluded Kanaio beach, through a desolate lava field, gives a unique perspective of the mighty Haleakalā (Maui’s Eastern shield volcano) and her last lava spew (approx. 200 years ago).

Hawaiian Nene Bird ーハワイ天然記念鳥、ネネ鳥の姿
On Nov.24, 2009 an endangered Hawaiian Nene bird (highly spiritual bird inhabiting in Mt. Haleakala,Maui about 8000 to 9000 feet above sea level) visited my backyard and spend 4 hours walking, talking to me, eating, taking a knap and observing our yard. So this is a very special day. I wanted to share this rare video with my friends around the world.

Iao Needle - Maui
The lovely, deep valley of 'Iao features the 'Iao Needle, a natural rock pinnacle presiding over the 'Iao stream and surrounded by the walls of the Pu'u Kukui Crater. Once used as a natural altar, the 2,250-foot stone pillar, covered in green foliage, is really a basaltic core that has survived eons of swirling water. 'Iao Valley is a peaceful lush area with easy hikes, exotic tropical plants, and clear, natural pools. The ridge-top lookout offers a fantastic view of the valley and Kahului Harbor.
'Iao Valley is the site of one of the most famous and bloody battles that changed Hawaii history forever. On this site, In 1790, King Kamehameha I destroyed the Maui army in his effort to unite the Hawaiian Islands.
