Le Marquis de Villarosa, auteur de la première biographie de Pergolèse. parue en 1831, nous apprend que la confrérie les Cavalieri della Vergine dei Dolori, sollicita en 1734 du jeune compositeur une nouvelle version du Sabat Mater, destinée à remplacer la version démodée d'Alessandro Sarcatti, que la même confrérie lui avait probablement commendée lors de l'office, tous les vendredis de Mars, en ´l'Église San Luigi di Palazzo à Naples. Mais il nést pas impossible non plus que ce soit le Duc Marzio Domenico dei Carafa Maddaloni que ait commandé l'oeuvre à Pergolèse, lequel était alors à son service. Nous savons en outre que le compositeur eut du mal à l'achever, car sa santé était minée depuis quelques années déjà par une forme de tuberculose. C'est à l'hospice du monastère franciscan de Pozzuoli qu'il termina sa partition, travallant jusqu'aux derniers jours que lui laissa la maladie. Il mourut le 16 Mars 1736, à l'âge de vingt-six ans.
