Our home has recently undergone a complete remodel/modernization of the bathrooms and kitchen and has been very tastefully decorated with Hawaiian island theme décor, very comfortable furniture, and various floral arrangements.
The kitchen is built entirely of Maui Koa wood. The wood was harvested from Kaupo Ranch on Maui, and the cabinets and bar top, were hand crafted and custom made right here on Maui. You will only find this Maui Koa wood in our home and, one other home on Maui, no one else has it. Our large master bedroom has a raised wooden platform for the Cal King bed, which adds its own unique character.
The master bathroom is appointed with beautiful neutral colored, Travertine Stone tile, with contrasting black & white stone marble counter tops. Architect Jim Carney Of Carney Logan Burke Architects Designed This Small Modern House For Himself.
Architect Jim Carney of Carney Logan Burke Architects designed this small modern house for his wife and himself. It is intended to become their guest house, but they are living in it for now while designing their main house. The architect states that one of the design goals was to “immerse the owners in the experience of the forest both visually and aurally.” The former was accomplished by the large windows in every room, and the latter by siting the house within earshot of a rushing stream.
The house is a straightforward rectangle with no bump-outs or jogs in the walls. The simple shape and shed roof should make for a house that is economical to build. The house and adjacent garage are clad in a combination of cedar shingles and corrosion-protected steel panels.
The 950 ft2 (88 m2) floor plan is organized with the living area in the center flanked by a bedroom and bathroom at each end. A compact galley kitchen lines one inside wall of the living area, while the opposite wall features a wood stove set within a wall of built-in cabinetry. The exterior walls are glass, admitting sunlight from the south and providing views of the small creek to the north. Having views of the vibrant green forest on both sides, the architect kept the interior material palette subdued with white walls, white oak floors and light-colored cabinetry. High ceilings, ranging from 10’6″ to 12′, enhance the feeling of openness created by the window walls.
Both bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling corner windows. Windows placed in a corner tend to open up a room to the outside and make it feel larger than windows in the middle of a wall do. Carney notes that with the large glass area, “you really feel like you’re sleeping in the woods.”
The house was designed to be energy-efficient with high levels of insulation and a high-efficiency heating system supplemented by the passive solar heat gained through the south-facing window wall. In the summer, natural cooling by cross-ventilation is facilitated by having openings on both sides of the living area.

PBS Hawaii - HIKI NŌ Episode 517 | All-Maui Special | Full Program
Premiere Airdate: May 1, 2014
This is the first all-Maui HIKI NŌ show - the first episode in which all the stories come from schools on one island. The episode is being hosted by all seven of the participating schools on Maui: H.P. Baldwin High School in Wailuku, Maui High School in Kahului, Lahainaluna High School in Lahaina, Maui Waena Intermediate in Kahului, Seabury Hall Middle School in Makawao, Lahaina Intermediate in Lahaina, and Kamehameha Schools Maui Middle School in Pukalani.
Top Story:
Students from Maui High School report on the very complex and divisive issue of cane burning in their community. Maui's Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar is the last producing sugar mill in Hawaii, and it still utilizes the 132-year-old process of cane burning. Many residents support HC&S because it provides jobs and is the last hold-out for Hawaii's all-but-dead plantation culture. But some community organizations, such as Maui Tomorrow, have strong concerns about the health hazards caused by the cane burning smoke and claim it increases the number of respiratory problems among residents in the area. Increased diligence with weather forecasts and introducing a non-burning green method of harvesting are two ways of minimizing the impact of sugar harvesting on residents. The journalists at Maui High study how different sectors of the community are working together to try to resolve the problem.
Also featured:
Students from Maui Waena Intermediate look into why construction on their new science building, whose funding was approved by the state legislature in 2007, has yet to start; Lahainaluna High School highlights the annual celebration of their most famous graduate, Hawaiian scholar David Malo; students from Seabury Hall Middle School profile a young female rodeo star; H.P. Baldwin High School studies how running a small business, the 4 Sisters Bakery, can put a strain on a family; students at Lahaina Intermediate profile a man who has been the school's crossing guard for two generations; and Kamehameha Schools Maui Middle tells about the history and values of the Nobriga family's Maui Soda and Ice Works.

About Taonga Glass
Taonga Glass has been a company created by designer and gaffer Edward Clark since 2005. As a World Class Public Access Glass Facility, Taonga Glass specializes in providing a quality studio for people to work with and learn glass. The facility offers a state of the art Hot and Cold Glass Studio, with equipment built from leaders in the glass field nationwide. The facility will hold classes as well as master classes with leaders in the fields of glass working. The entire facility is roughly 3600 square feet, with the glass studios as well as a small gallery area. Though currently the new facility has opened up the studio to a larger community, this company has produced glass for sale nationwide for the last few years. This Glass has been refereed to as Taonga, or Maori for sacred or precious objects and heirlooms that are passed down from generation to generation. This precious term has described countless artifacts through time, and now is used to describe glass made in this studio such as glass sculpture, vases, cup sets, goblets, dishware, and architectural items such as sinks and lighting.
