Reims is a city in northeastern France's Grand Est region. It's the unofficial capital of the Champagne wine-growing region, and many of the champagne houses headquartered there offer tastings and cellar tours. For more than 1,000 years, French kings were crowned at its Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims. This grand cathedral is known for its stained-glass windows and Gothic carved portals, including the Smiling Angel.
Reims (sometimes spelled Rheims in English), a city in northern France, is perhaps best known for its world heritage listed cathedral, where generations of French kings were crowned. It is also the largest city in the Champagne area and some the champagne cellars located in the city are likewise inscribed on the world heritage list.
Reims, the home of champagne (the most celebrated and celebratory wine in the world), is the main city of the Champagne area. It is a charming city, and one that the French hold dear to their hearts. There stands one of the most beautiful buildings of the Middle Ages in Europe, one that is filled with history: almost all French kings were crowned there for about 1,000 years. Most of the old houses were destroyed during World War I, and the city was extensively rebuilt in the 1920's in an Art Deco style.
No matter what you have read, nothing can prepare you for that first skyward glimpse of Reims’ gargantuan Gothic cathedral. Rising golden and imperious above the city, the cathedral is where, over the course of a millennium (816 to 1825), some 34 sovereigns – among them two dozen kings – began their reigns. Meticulously restored after WWI and again following WWII, Reims is endowed with handsome pedestrian boulevards, Roman remains, art-deco cafes and a flourishing fine-dining scene that counts among it four Michelin-starred restaurants. Along with Épernay, it is the most important centre of Champagne production, and a fine base for exploring the Montagne de Reims Champagne Route.

Reims from le Palais du Tau, Notre-Dame Cathedral Towers, Hôtel Le Vergeur & Beaux-Arts Museum, Mumm
The #residence of the archbishops of #Reims adjoins the cathedral since the twelfth century, but it has had the classic appearance it currently has after the transformations made in the late seventeenth century by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and Robert de Cotte .
The #PalaisDuTau now houses the #Museum of the Work of Notre Dame. The treasure of the #cathedral and part of the original statuary of the church are on display.
The most remarkable pieces of the royal treasury are the #talisman of #Charlemagne (ninth century) and the chalice of St. Remi (twelfth century). The #reliquary of the holy bulb would contain the oil of celestial origin which was anointed the new king during the ceremony of his coronation.
Did you know that it’s possible to visit the #towers of the Cathedral? Thanks to a dual ticket delivered by the Palais du Tau Museum, you would be able to climb during 10 minutes and get closer to #Paradise! This ascension may have been possible since the early 2000s.
Despite its 80 meters high and its 248 steps to climb to reach the towers at 42 meters, the Reims Cathedral is not the highest in France but the longest, 150 meters. Since the parisian Cathedral #NotreDame has recently burned and thus closed, the Cathedral Notre-Dame of Reims remains now the closest and more important religious edifice, for the tourists from #Paris, willing to keep a contact with such old stones.
Numerous legendary mansions survived, as a whole or just partly before the 1914-1918 war. Among them, the famous House of Musicians; the neighboring hotel which was later called the #PalaisRoyal (#RoyalPalace); and of course the #HôtelLeVergeur, with its vast room lit by tall mullioned windows and rosettes.
Those were mainly built, in the 13th century, in the oldest streets of Reims, which was colored recently with eight different hues! It’s in this street, you walk in front of the Demeure des Comtes de #Champagne, one of the rare remains of the #medieval #architecture of Reims. This majestic palace was residence of those #VIP personae, especially during the occasion of #royal coronations, which were held in the cathedral.
