The hotel Bourgtheroulde (pronounced bourtroude) is an old mansion dating largely from the xvi th century, located Place de la Pucelle , in the historic center of Rouen. William II Rufus, lord of Bourgtheroulde and member of the Exchequer of Normandy , decided at the end of the xv th century is to build a stone hotel worthy of his rank in the style of Louis XII , transition between Gothic and style of the first French Renaissance.
His son, William III, continued the work of embellishment and completed the work of his father. In the inner courtyard, on the left, the gallery of Aumale presents a carved Renaissance decoration of rare quality. William III are represented the famous interview Camp Cloth of Gold between François I st and Henry VIII of England . At the level of the roof, a second series of bas-reliefs illustrates the allegorical poem of the triumphs of Petrarch. More recently, this former mansion was occupied until the end of 2006 by a bank, the Crédit Industriel de Normandie. It was then renovated into a luxury hotel, its opening dates from April 2010.
It is the subject of a classification as historical monuments for its facades and roofs, since the January 11 , 1924. A first time ravaged on April 19, 1944 during the bombing said the red week , it is the bombing of August 26, preceding the liberation of the city which caused the most damage, destroying some of the decorations of the main building. Its architecture is similar to that of the Palais de Justice and thecontemporary finance office .
The Bourgtheroulde hotel overlooks Place de la Pucelle . Formerly called Market Square calves , she took that name following a mistake: It was long thought that it was on this square that Joan of Arc was executed. This remarkable Louis XII and Renaissance style hotel was built by an eminent person: William II the Roux, lord of Bourgthéroulde . It seems that the work began as early as 1501. On the death of William II, in 1520, it became the property of William III, abbot of Aumale. It is at this time that was built the famous gallery of Aumale (or François I st ), representing the interview Camp Cloth of Gold . In 1532, it is the brother of William III, Claude Le Roux who inherited good.
The Bourgtheroulde Hotel has a long history. he suffered the vicissitudes. The interior of the hotel has practically disappeared. The facade on the Place de la Pucelle and the facades on the courtyard have been deeply modified: the north facade was rebuilt after the fire of 1770. The southern turret, hit hard by a torpedo in 1944 was completely rebuilt without its carved decoration. The gardens have been replaced by modern premises.
