The Town Hall of Mulhouse ( Rothüss in Alsatian ) is a style building Renaissance located in n o 2 of the Place de la Réunion to Mulhouse . It houses the Grand Council room, still used for ceremonies and meetings of the city council, and the historical museum of the city which traces the history of the former Republic of Mulhouse . Promoted free city of Empire in 1308 , Mulhouse allies with a dozen other Alsatian cities in 1354 to form the Decapolis and acquires many liberties, including that of administering itself in the form of an elected Council by the bourgeois of the city, which in 1515 forms alliances with the thirteen Swiss cantons .
The original Town Hall ( Rothüss ), dating from 1432 , was destroyed by a large fire in 1551 . It was rebuilt from 1552 to 1553 on the foundations of the previous building under the direction of Basel stonemason Michel Lynthumer. The spiral gables and the slightly decentered, double-flighted steeple-covered staircase are characteristic of the Rhine Renaissance style. Christophe Bock paints the building in red and gold. This new Rothüss is the symbol of the power of the first Mulhouse bourgeoisie then at the head of a free city allied to the Swiss cantons . Passing through Mulhouse in 1580 ,Montaigne describes the building as a magnificent and all-gold palace in his Journey through Europe.
A gallery is built at the back of the building in 1637. In 1698 , the Mulhouse artist Jean Gabriel painted all the sets in trompe l'oeil on the basis of allegorical engravings by Henric Golrzius. A second floor is added to the building in 1778 - 1779 to raise it, resulting in a retouching and modification of painted decorations and motifs by Théodore-André Genderich.
The ceremony of the Meeting of the Republic of Mulhouse to France on March 15 , 1798 is presided over from the front steps of the double flight staircase. In 1846 , the Parisian painters Lachaise and Holfeld restore the painted decorations, then in 1903 , it is a painter from Munich , Ferdinand Wagner, who restores them again by taking some liberties with the allegorical paintings and the colors, opting for a hue between red and orange. The color has tarnished over the years, the last restoration of 1988 was anxious to find the original tints.
The outdoor decors of the Town Hall, painted in trompe-l'œil , witnesses of the Renaissance Rhine, represent the virtues advocated by the Reformed religion through the allegorical figures of Justice, Courage, Temperance, Faith and Charity, symbols of good government and justice, but also the coat of arms of the Swiss cantons of which Mulhouse was once the ally. The cultural reference proposed by the decor of the building is that of ancient Rome .
There is a reproduction of Klapperstein on the right side of the Town Hall building. This stone hanging from a chain represents a human head with eyes wide open and tongue-pulling. This is the gossip stone (translation of the German Klapperstein ), whose original, weighing 12 kg is located in the historical museum of the city. Formerly it was reserved for the punishment of the slanderers who were condemned to the execution of the stone.

Mulhouse est une ville du département du Haut-Rhin, située en région Grand Est. Elle fait partie de la région culturelle et historique d'Alsace. Il s'agit de la deuxième ville d'Alsace et de la quatrième agglomération du Grand Est en nombre d'habitants qui résident à 54 % dans sa banlieue provoquant une importante migration pendulaire. Son aire urbaine couvre 286 730 habitants (40 % de la population du Haut-Rhin) et sa zone d'emploi regroupe 431 337 habitants. « Archétype de la ville fabriquée par les flux migratoires » depuis la révolution industrielle, c'est une ville très cosmopolite. Avec 42 % de ses habitants âgés de moins de 30 ans, Mulhouse est également la grande ville de France métropolitaine qui a la plus forte proportion de jeunes. La cité est proche de l'Allemagne et de la Suisse, avec qui elle entretient des liens importants. De ces liens est issu l'aéroport international Bâle-Mulhouse-Fribourg (EuroAirport), le plus important du Grand Est.
Fondée selon la légende autour d'un moulin à eau, Mulhouse fut longtemps une cité-État qui devint en 1347 la République de Mulhouse (Stadtrepublik Mülhausen). À coups d'alliances, elle affirma son indépendance à l'égard du Saint-Empire à la fin du XVe siècle, puis adopta les idées de la Réforme protestante par l'instauration du calvinisme comme religion d'État. Propulsée dans l'aventure industrielle en 1746 et « réunie » à la France en 1798, elle devint un des premiers pôles industriels d'Europe et fut longtemps surnommée le « Manchester français ». En 1812, la filature dite « vieux DMC » est construite et fut longtemps un des symboles de la Révolution industrielle en Europe. En 1904, c'est le Nord de l'agglomération qui se lança dans l'exploitation minière. Cet important passé industriel forgea l'identité de la cité. Du fait de la présence de l'industrie spatiale, Mulhouse est membre de la communauté des villes Ariane.
Cette identité industrielle se traduit également culturellement, Mulhouse possède ainsi le plus grand musée de l'automobile du monde : la Cité de l'automobile qui contient la célèbre collection Schlumpf. Le musée EDF Electropolis est le plus important d'Europe à être consacré à l'énergie électrique. Enfin, la Cité du train est le plus grand musée ferroviaire européen. Cette concentration fait de Mulhouse la « capitale européenne des musées techniques ». La ville est labellisée ville d'art et d'histoire. Mulhouse a vu naître et grandir le capitaine Alfred Dreyfus, dont l'affaire coupa en deux la France entière. C'est aussi la ville natale du grand mathématicien Johann Heinrich Lambert et d'Alfred Werner, prix Nobel de chimie en 1913. Enfin, les vulcanologues Katia et Maurice Krafft furent également des Mulhousiens de renom. Terre de la Réforme, Mulhouse accueille en son cœur le temple Saint-Étienne qui est l'édifice protestant le plus haut de France. La ville est souvent surnommée la « cité du Bollwerk », qui signifie bastion en allemand. Il reste en effet un bastion, épargné lors de la suppression des fortifications de la ville au début du XIXe siècle. Il en est devenu un des symboles.

I was travelling across Europe using my Interrail pass from London to Budapest and as part of my trip I stopped off in Mulhouse. I spent my first night in Strasbourg and then took a train to Mulhouse and then on to Zurich in Switzerland.
