Originally constructed as a 16th Century City Hall, the Hotel de Ville has stood at the epicenter of the wildest events in history. It was on its doorstep that the French Revolution ignited, in its opulent rooms that Robespierre tried to commit suicide, and in its vast corridors that a radical anarchist sect siezed Paris at the end of the Franco-Prussian War.

Das Hôtel de Ville ist das in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts im Stil der Neorenaissance errichtete Rathaus von Paris. Das Rathaus befindet sich im nach ihm benannten 4. Arrondissement an der Rue de Rivoli.
Das erste Gebäude an dem Ort, die Maison des Piliers, entstammte dem 14. Jahrhundert und wurde im Jahr 1357 von Étienne Marcel zum Rathaus umgewidmet. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde es wegen Baufälligkeit abgerissen und im Stile der Renaissance neu gebaut. Am 4. September 1870 wurde im Gebäude die Dritte Republik ausgerufen. Während der Pariser Kommune im Jahre 1871 wurde das Gebäude zerstört.
Das gegenwärtige Gebäude mit 146 Statuen an der Fassade wurde in den Jahren 1874–1882 gebaut. Es wurde von den Architekten Théodore Ballu (1817–1885) und Pierre Deperthes (1833–1898) entworfen.
Der Platz vor dem Rathaus war im Mittelalter der älteste Hafen- und Anliegeplatz und Keimzelle der Stadt Paris. Hier wurden die wichtigsten Güter umgeschlagen. Sein sandiges, flaches Ufer gab ihm den Namen Place de Grève (deutsch: Sanduferplatz).
Wegen der vielen Streiks unzufriedener Arbeiter bekamen die Begriffe „faire (la) grève“ und „être en grève“ die Bedeutung von „streiken“. Der Platz war in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten berüchtigt für seine öffentlichen Hinrichtungen. Galgen, Pranger und Richtblock standen auf dem Platz, während der Revolution auch eine Guillotine. Am 19. März 1803 wurde die Place de Grève (auch: „Streikplatz“) in Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville (Rathausplatz) umbenannt. Seit 1982 ist er für Fußgänger reserviert.

L'Hôtel de ville de Paris - Paris - France
Étienne Marcel fait l'acquisition de la « Maison aux Piliers » au nom de la municipalité en juillet 1357. C'est là que, depuis lors, se dresse le centre des institutions municipales de Paris.
La « Maison aux Piliers » est remplacée au XVIe siècle par un véritable palais dessiné par l'architecte italien Boccador. Sa construction débute en 1533 et s'achève en 1628. L'agrandissement et la reconstruction partielle de l'hôtel-de-ville ont été menés d'après les plans de Godde et Lesueur de 1837 à 1848, tout en préservant la façade Renaissance. Antoine Vivenel, entrepreneur général, dirigeait le chantier.
Pendant la Commune de Paris, l'incendie déclenché par un groupe de communards le 24 mai 1871 réduit le palais en cendres. Les archives et la bibliothèque partent donc également en fumée. Ainsi, les deux collections de l'état civil parisien (celle de la ville et celle du greffe) antérieur à 1860 sont à jamais perdues : la première dans l'incendie de l'Hôtel de ville et la seconde dans celui du Palais de Justice.
Le bâtiment est reconstruit entre 1874 et 1882 sur les plans des architectes Théodore Ballu et Édouard Deperthes. La façade, de style néorenaissance, s'inspire largement de celle du bâtiment disparu.
La place de Grève, rebaptisée place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville le 19 mars 1803, est devenue en 1982 un espace réservé aux piétons.
Paris ayant connu diverses insurrections, l'Hôtel de ville fut souvent le point de ralliement d'émeutiers, insurgés et révolutionnaires. D'Étienne Marcel à la Fronde, de la Révolution aux journées révolutionnaires de juillet 1830 et février 1848, de la Commune à la Libération de Paris, l'Hôtel de ville est un lieu chargé d'histoire.

L'Hotel de Ville in Paris, France
The Marais literally means 'marsh' and that is exactly what this Parisian neighborhood was 1,000 years ago, writes Abby Gordon, an American expat and freelance writer based in Paris.
Before the area was drained into a fertile marshland, it was a swamp, and unfortunately the swamp-like odors remained centuries after the transformation. Narrow cobblestoned streets, exposed stone and beamed-buildings and slanted walls and rooflines are prevalent, a testament to the Marais's medieval history.
Today, the Marais is one of Paris's most trendy and desirable neighborhoods. It is the hub of the gay community in Paris. The Marais is also home to so many restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, many of which stay open on Sundays, an unusual phenomenon in France. Despite this modernization, the Marais still retains so much of the medieval character that was bulldozed in the 19th and 20th centuries for bigger and better structures in other parts of the City of Light—but not the medieval smell. Thankfully, the most prevalent smell these days emanates from the numerous seductive boulangeries (bakeries) and pâtisseries (pastry shops).

Paris Les Halles Pompidou Hôtel de Ville Notre Dame
A lively pedestrian zone leads us to the Pompidou Center, an inside-out building covered with pipes and beams, containing Paris's main collection of modern art. Drop in and run through if you are a fan of modern and contemporary painting and sculpture, and be sure to have a look at the wild Stravinsky Fountains outdoors next door on the Plaza with their colorful kinetic sculptures spinning like crazy.
Hôtel de Ville is the City Hall of Paris. This grand structure was first built back in the 1530s by King Francois the 1st, and it took quite a while to finish the construction – it was later expanded and in the 1870s there was a colossal fire that burned out all of the inside of the building and damaged the exterior stone shell, as well and then it was rebuilt. It was reconstructed in the 1880s in the original style, so what we're looking at today is a French Renaissance structure. The City Hall is the most important building because this is a huge city. It was the largest city in Europe when the City Hall was first built in the 1530s and still today it's one of Europe's largest cities.
Just a couple blocks away we get to another one of the city's great monuments, the Cathedral of Notre Dame. One of the oldest buildings in town, it was first constructed from 1163 in the Gothic style. It is the prototype for several hundred churches that were built in the same style all over northern Europe in the 12, 13 and 14th centuries, right on up through the 16th century. It's a big church, it is rather dark so it's a little hard to see inside – you've got to let your eyes get adjusted – with its majestic stone roof and round glass windows, surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens right on the banks of the River Seine.
Notice the flying buttresses that are holding up the rear part of the church, the apse. Stone pillars coming out from the walls and going down to the ground, making sure the walls don't collapse outward. Notre Dame was the first place in the history of Gothic architecture that the these flying buttresses were ever used.

Paris's Hotel de Ville is actually no hotel at all, but the city hall.
This renaissance building is the office of the mayor and the city's administration.
The building was completed in 1628, 75 years after King Francis the first conceived of the idea.
In 1871, the entire structure was burnt by the revolutionaries, leaving only the exterior still intact.
Nearly twenty years of reconstruction restored the Hotel de Ville's exterior and redid the interior.

L'Hôtel de Ville de Paris is the headquarters for the City of Light since 1357. L'Hôtel de Ville de Paris is one of the biggest municipal building in Europe.
