The town hall of Poitiers is a municipal building of Second Empire style in Poitiers . It is located on the Place du Maréchal-Leclerc , former Place d'Armes. Built between 1869 and 1875 , the town hall of Poitiers is the end point of a vast project of urbanization of the city center, started with the arrival of the train in 1851 and the construction of the prefecture between 1864 and 1869 . The decision was also made to build a broad boulevard of Haussmann inspiration , connecting the new departmental building to the Place d'Armes: this new axis, now rue Victor Hugo , was to act as a triumphal way opening onto the new town hall.
Previously, the town hall was installed at the échevinage. Antoine-Gaétan Guérinot is chosen as architect. Work begun in 1869 , interrupted during the War of 1870 , will not be completed until 1875. By order of 29 October 1975, the facades, roofs and the grand staircase are inscribed as historical monuments.
Due to lack of funding, the sets planned in the project were not fully completed. The building remains a major monument representative of the tastes of the Second Empire . The majestic facade is in neo-renaissance style , according to the style Napoleon III , lover of architectural pastiches (a neo-Gothic project was also proposed and rejected). This neo-renaissance style implicitly refers to the city hall of Paris , and is frequently found in city halls of the same period (for example Niort or Saint-Jean d'Angély ). In Poitiersthe building was to house not only the city administration, but also the municipal museum of fine arts that left in 1974 . The main façade presents a theatrical composition, according to an organization inspired by the xviii th century , which opposes the side walls and the back cover, much more austere. Breakthrough wide windows with double horizontal rails, it is punctuated by columns and pilasters ringed in the manner of the architect of the xvi th century , Philibert de l'Orme .
This theatrical staircase depicts the visitor's ascent to the loggia. From this balcony, it can in turn see and be seen ... Thus, the shape of the building has as many social meanings as its decor. Several sculptures adorn the staircase: two allegorical caryatids by Louis-Ernest Barrias : Science and the Fine Arts , as well as the busts of the mayors of the city of Poitiers, contemporaries of the construction: Olivier Bourbeau and Arsène Orillard, both due to the sculptor Pierre-Amédée Brouillet.
The hall of honor, former ballroom, retains an inlaid parquet with the coat of arms of the city. The stained glass is the work of Steinheil and represents Aliénor d'Aquitaine confirming the charter of commune in 1199. Among the aldermen on the right, we recognize another portrait: that of the architect Antoine-Gaétan Guérinot who looks at the viewer. The ceiling is adorned by a painting by Jean-Baptiste Brunet : Du Guesclin delivering Poitiers of the English in 1372 (1885).
The former hall of the municipal council, today called hall of the coat of arms, is adorned with a ceiling painted by Emile Bin . It represents the city of Poitiers , in the guise of a woman rewarding Labor, accompanied by the Force, Justice, Charity and Peace. On both sides, the allegories of the Poitou rivers are painted: La Boivre and Le Clain (1881-1882). These two figures are placed in relation to the central table, according to the real topography of the rivers: Clain in the east and Boivre in the west.

Poitiers is a riverside city in western France. Its Romanesque church of Église Notre-Dame-la-Grande is known for its intricately carved facade, which illustrates episodes from the Bible. The Palace of Poitiers, home to the city's courthouse, features the Salle des Pas Perdus, a cavernous assembly hall with massive fireplaces.
Poitiers is a commune and the capital of the Vienne department and also of the Poitou-Charentes region. Poitiers is a major university centre. The centre of town is picturesque and its streets include predominant historical architecture, especially religious architecture and especially from the Romanesque period. Two major military battles took place near the city: in 732, the Battle of Poitiers (also known as the Battle of Tours), in which the Franks commanded by Charles Martel halted the expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate, and in 1356, the Battle of Poitiers, a key victory for the English forces during the Hundred Years' War. This battle's consequences partly provoked the Jacquerie.
The city of Poitiers is strategically situated on the Seuil du Poitou, a shallow gap between the Armorican and the Central Massif. The Seuil du Poitou connects the Aquitaine Basin to the South to the Paris Basin to the North. This area is an important geographic crossroads in France and Western Europe. Poitiers's primary site sits on a vast promontory between the valleys of the Boivre and the Clain. The old town occupies the slopes and the summit of a plateau which rises 130 feet (40 m) above the streams which surround it on three sides. Thus Poitiers benefits from a very strong tactical situation. This was an especially important factor before and throughout the Middle Ages.
Inhabitants of Poitiers are referred as Pictaviens (male) and Pictaviennes (female) from Pictavis, which was the ancient name for the town. It is not uncommon for inhabitants of Poitiers to call themselves Poitevins or Poitevines, although this denomination can be used for anyone from the Poitou province.
Historic churches, in particular Romanesque church buildings, are the main attraction inside Poitiers itself. The town's centre is picturesque, with generally well-preserved architecture and a recently re-zoned pedestrian area. There are numerous shops, cafes and restaurants in the town centre. Since 1987, Poitiers' tourist industry has indirectly benefited from the Futuroscope theme-park and research park in nearby Chasseneuil-du-Poitou. The centre of town receives visits in complement to the theme-park and benefits from a larger proportion of European tourists, notably from the United Kingdom. In conjunction, Poitiers' tourism has directly benefited from the TGV high-speed rail link to Paris.
