TINY ISLAND EXPLORING | Hotojima, Oita
My friends and I decided to spend a day on Hotojima - a small island about a 30 minute ferry ride from Tsukumi in Oita.
We hiked around the island and climbed over rocks to get to a beach. Highlight was all the friendly cats. Usually, the island's cats were a bit roughed up but the young cats are so friendly now.
Excellent day exploring the Japanese countryside!
Much love and happy travels

Day in the Life of Japanese Aquarium “Dolphin Island” & Pearl Store in Kyushu
Japanese Aquariums are popular not only around Japan, but also around the World. Day in the life of Japanese Pearl store in Kyushu, we have a unique experience with “Dolphin Island”, where you can try not communicating with animals, but also taking out a pearl from a shell. Dolphins in Japan are having trouble to survive with climate change and ecological destruction, that is why “Umitamago” created this island to research and develop health in dolphins and other creatures. In our Pearl store we want to share the authenticity of gems and through those activities raise awareness of environmental crisis. In Japanese Aquarium we do not just have fun, but also develop bond between dolphins and human. In fact, dolphins have the system, where they share human like feelings like love, grief and other through their echolocation.

29 Things That Exist Only in Japan
There are a lot of countries that are famous all over the world for some peculiarities. Japan is, probably one of the most exotic ones. It is known as the Land of the Rising Sun, but it could also be called the Land of singing toilets, the country of the blue traffic light, or the country of vending machines.
Really, Japan is a unique country, different from the rest of the world. Japanese farmers grow square watermelons, people park and lock their umbrella before going inside a building and there’s a whole chain of restaurants all over the country where they serve only canned food. In short, there are so many things that make Japan a whole other world. Get ready to explore!

SUMMARY:
- The Yunessun Spa Resort in Hakone offers its guests the pretty unique experience of splashing around in a vat of pork soup and ramen noodles.
- Specialists make this kind of food from plastic or wax, and it looks just as delicious as the real one.
- Their photo booths, called purikura, allow you to edit photos right on the spot, adding different backgrounds, funny stickers, or writings.
- Japan has more than 5 million of them! Mostly because they save time for people who work late hours, which is a pretty common thing there.
- In 2015, Godzilla was granted citizenship in Tokyo's Shinjuku ward.
- Punctuality is a really big thing there, and train stations do everything possible to avoid a delay.
- While in many other countries slurping is considered rude, in Japan it’s a way to show your appreciation of the dish.
- Japanese people don't eat mayo with salads, meat, and sandwiches; in Japan, people usually use it as a topping for ice-cream or on pancakes.
- World’s shortest escalator is in the basement of More’s Department Store, which is located in the city of Kawasaki. The escalator has only 5 steps and is only 33 inches tall.
- The village of Nagoro used to have a population of 300 people, but less than 40 residents live there now. A local artist, Tsukimi Ayano, made over 300 life-size dolls, most of which look like former residents; and they’re located in various states of action.
- It’s common for Japanese culture to avoid the number 4 because it’s considered to be very unlucky.
- They use a blue color instead of green for traffic lights. The reason for that hides in their language: historically, there was only one word for both colors.
- Japanese kids learn how to clean in many schools because it’s a part of their education.
- Toilets in Japan are very high-tech. To use one, a person should know what all those buttons are for.
- Since Japan is a densely-populated country, they don’t like to waste space. That’s why their parking lots have a smart system. They’re designed like multi-level garages.

First Cherry Blossoms of the Year | Kawazuzakura in Tsukumi, Oita
It's that time of year again - sakura season! Tsukumi in Oita has Kawazuzakura (winter cherry blossoms) that bloom between mid-February to early March. A couple friends and I took a drive out to Youra Peninsula to see them.
This isn't a typical hanami set up. They are planted along the road and you stop to take pictures and enjoy them. It is different from what you'd expect from cherry blossom viewing but it was fun. It's made me excited for spring to come.

Pill Bug Beach Invasion [HD]
Thousands (millions?) of pill bugs scampering away from the rising ocean waters just hours before Typhoon No 18 hits Japan. This was a small north-facing beach (冠海水浴場) in Tsukumi, Oita prefecture, Japan. If anyone knows why a mass exodus of roly polies like this would occur, please leave a comment!

Japan Travel: Akashi City 明石市 and Awaji Island 淡路島
Last weekend we had a beautiful warm weather that just prompted us to go for a walk to a beach. However, we have already explored Suma and Maiko Beach many times so we decided to head to Awaji Island via Akashi City. After reaching Akashi by JR train we took a look at local fish market where we discovered a local delicacy - akashiyaki (please see our previous movie). Then we took a speed boat to Awaji, after only 13 min ride we found ourselves in Iwaya port. On island we enjoyed a stroll along the sea side, explored some very interesting rock formations and had akashiyaki (again!). It was a very beautiful day indeed.

1. Products in Japan amuse me at times. Especially when they misuse English.
2. School farewells are tough - I have two more tomorrow and three next week. Gambarimasu!
3. Japan in the summer sucks! OK, ok - it doesn't suck, but damn it's hot!
4. I didn't mention it in this vlog - but I got to go swimming with about 12 of my students yesterday at the school pool. It was so refreshing and fun! 12 boys who are in the Fun Sports Club get to use the pool after school and I was asked to join them. We had a blast! I may be a fat old geezer, but I can swim like a fish. :D
5. I can't wait to be back in the States to drink regular Pepsi again. It's sad that I'm looking forward to cola... :P
6. This video is over 10 minutes long - if you watched all the way to the end I owe you a sticker! :D

PS - the really sad thing is I don't even chew gum.

Kasagi: Gates of Hope (NHK Coverage Sacred Homecoming)
NHK World covers the heartwarming return of two kasagi washed away by the 2011 tsunami in Japan.
In 2013, two nearly identical pieces of torii gates - known as kasagi - landed on the Oregon shore. Researchers from the Portland Japanese Garden determined these had been washed away by the 2011 Great Northeastern Earthquake & Tsunami of Japan. and began a search for the origin of these sacred artifacts. In October 2015, the two kasagi were finally returned to their home in Hachinohe, Japan much to the joy of the town from where they came.

Hoto Island
Island floating in Bungo Suido, 14 km from Tsukumi Port. A steep slope approaches the coast at the top of Mt. Farmi at an altitude of 179 m, and the coastline on the north and southeast sides is a cliff with almost no flat ground. The settlements are dense on the western slopes. The island name is said to have inherited the name Ama-gun Honmongo in the Encyclopedia Dictionary Japanese name class 聚 in the year of Seihei (931 to 938). In the Edo period, there were Saban's Kanban and Tominbansho. Ocean tuna fishery, which was started from around 1887, now has 10 billion yen of landed per year, making it a major tuna base. It is designated as the Nichiho Coast National Monument, and is dotted with beautiful sandy beaches and strange rocks. Blue tourism has been implemented as a model project since 2001. (See Shimadas)
