Shaoxing
Shaoxing is a prefecture-level city on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay in northeastern Zhejiang province, China. It was formerly known as Kuaiji and Shanyin and abbreviated in Chinese as 越 from the area's former inhabitants. Located on the south bank of the Qiantang River estuary, it borders Ningbo to the east, Taizhou to the southeast, Jinhua to the southwest, and Hangzhou to the west. The city itself is lined with numerous canals and waterways, giving it a classic Jiangnan style scenery though more mountainous than is typical for Jiangnan. At the 2010 census, its population was 4,912,339 inhabitants whom 1,914,683 lived in the built-up area of Hangzhou-Shaoxing, with 8,156,154 inhabitants.

The curious case of the Chinese Rooftop strikes again!
First, there was the eccentric businessman who built a mountain-villa on the roof of a Beijing apartment building. Then there was that mysterious temple built on a Chinese skyscraper. Now we have the story of farmer Peng Quigen and his one-of-a-kind ‘sky-farm’. For several years, he has been growing rice, fruits and vegetables on the roof of his four-storey home in Shaoxing, Zhejiang province, 40 feet above the ground.
Peng’s sky-farm is no hobby. What he has done with just 120-square-meters of rooftop is pretty remarkable. He’s actually managing to yield large quantities of produce from this small, yet fertile, patch. Just last year, Peng harvested nearly 400 kilograms of watermelon, which is a whopping 30 percent higher than ground-level yield. This year he’s trying out rice – he says that in spite of the negative impact of typhoon ‘Fitow’, he’s expecting to harvest enough rice to feed one adult for one whole year.

秋色美如画的寄畅园，原先就是一座僧舍，却被改建成古典园林
来江南赏秋，无锡的惠山古镇不得不去。这里有江南古银杏，有百年红枫，更有精致的湖光山色。当然最著名的要数古镇上的园中园——寄畅园。这座占地面积才不到15亩的袖珍园林，却曾吸引清朝的康熙、乾隆两位皇帝先后18次到访。
乾隆皇帝写过这样的诗：江南诸名胜，唯惠山秦园最古。“秦园”，也是寄畅园的别名。在明朝以前，该园址原为临近的惠山寺僧人的僧舍，明嘉靖初年（约公元1527年前后），无锡人秦金购得此处房产，就把它改成自己的私人园林，名“凤谷山庄”，也称“秦园”。秦金的后代，取“寄抑郁之情于山水之间”的含义，才更名为“寄畅园”。
寄畅园内原先构筑了20个精致园景景观，每一道景观还有题诗一首，整个园区散发出传统文化的神韵。因为园林的造型精致，清朝的康熙和乾隆两帝十分喜欢这座园林。特别是“大诗人”乾隆，一生写作了约41863首诗词，其中单独写无锡惠山古镇寄畅园的就有169首，当年的乾隆皇帝算是寄畅园的“超级粉丝”了。
现代人能记住乾隆有关寄畅园的诗作，恐怕就这么一句了：“寄畅园中眺翠螺，入云抚树湿多罗。”如今的寄畅园，大树参天、竹影婆娑、苍凉廓落、古朴清幽。园内的古树，大多在三、四百年以上，它见证了这座江南名园500多年的沧桑巨变。当初的园林主人，亲手种植的树木，想不到成为后代赏秋的好地方。
江南赏秋，之所以推崇去寄畅园，是因为寄畅园内的所有景色，就是围绕着一泓池水而展开的。山影、塔影、亭影、榭影、树影、花影、鸟影，尽汇池中。春有鸟语花香，夏有参天清凉，秋游红枫黄叶，冬有飞雪素裹。四季之景，各不相同，堪称一部“淡抹浓妆总相宜”的山水巨幅。
寄畅园南北长、东西狭窄，园景布局以山池为中心，巧于因借，混合自然。站在寄畅园内，抬头望出去，两旁的锡山和惠山，如同就在园中，深邃且博大，这就是古人造园时“借景造景”的巧妙。
寄畅园内的池水，是从著名的“天下第二泉”引来的，通过假山叠成的，总长36米的引水山涧，设计成八个曲折弯道，让泉水自己顺流而下。每个弯道口，泉水发出来的流水声，似古人的“金石丝竹匏土革木”发出的音响，所以人们也叫它“八音涧”。
寄畅园内秋天最美的景色，一是银杏，二是红枫，一黄一红染就了一园秋色。但是从前的寄畅园内并没有种植红枫树木，倒是有着榉树、朴树、糙叶树等色叶树种。因为传统的中式庭院中鲜有种红枫的，而红枫却在西方园林中较为常见。现在人们在寄畅园见到的红枫，大多数是上世纪七十年代栽种的，至今已经成为园内非常有点睛之笔的树木。
据说有人曾总结出无锡最美的七棵树，其中之一就是寄畅园内的古香樟树。香樟，常绿大乔木，寄畅园还是僧房的时候，园区内就有多棵香樟树木，距今已有千年了。据说当年的康熙皇帝十分喜爱园内的千年香樟树，清朝的翰林院编修中也有记载：“寄畅园有樟树，大数抱，千年物也，圣祖每幸园，抚玩不置。回銮后，犹忆及之，问无恙否。”也不知道身在皇宫的康熙大帝，却为何总惦念着江南寄畅园的香樟树。
