Running Ponkapoag Pond Trail, Blue Hills, Milton, MA
In this series, Kristen introduces running in the Ponkapoag Pond section of the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton, Massachusetts.
Trail Run: 4 mile loop on the Ponkapoag Pond Trail
Trail Directions: Turn right at Exit 3 off I-95 South into a tiny parking area. The info kiosk is at the end of the parking area by a dirt access road. Run .25 miles on the access road where the trail (marked with Green dots) intersects. The loop can be completed either clockwise (continue STRAIGHT at the intersection) or counter-clockwise (turn LEFT at the intersection onto a narrower trail). Running the first means a winding downhill at the start of your run and a gradual uphill climb over roots and rocks in the last 2 miles. Running the later means a rocky start in the first 2 miles with a winding hill climb in the final .25 miles.
Trail Map: Available at Trailside Museum and at the info kiosk in the parking area
Trail Conditions: Wide, dirt packed, protruding roots and rocks (especially in the 2 mile section from Fisherman's Beach to the trailhead)
Trail Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (not as technical as other trails run or in the Blue Hills but still a worthwhile training run)
Trail Notes: Parking is limited and fills quickly. Additional parking is located at Houghton's Pond. No restroom facilities provided in this location. Loop feels longer than 4 miles but is enjoyable, especially the 400 meter section through the Ponkapoag Golf Course (please obey signage in season). Numerous wildlife including coyotes.

Description: Houghton's Pond is a spring-fed kettle hole pond in Milton, Massachusetts, south of Boston. Like many ponds and lakes in the United States, it was formed by receding glaciers about 10,000 years ago. By the standard definition of lakes being bodies of water larger than 20 acres , the 24-acre pond is technically a lake. The pond is located within the Blue Hills Reservation and managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The Massachusett tribe once fished the pond and hunted in the woodlands that surround it. The local indian tribe called it Hoosic-Whisick, but around 1690, a British settler named Ralph Houghton bought 360 acres of forest and land to farm. He used the pond as a source of ice, drinking water and fish. His farmhouse once stood where the refreshment stand now stands. The area is a popular destination for Massachusetts residents in all seasons. Near the city limits of Boston, the setting offers people the chance to quickly immerse themselves in a natural surrounding. The pond offers a visitor's center, supervised swimming area, stocked fishing, picnic areas, and various outdoor sports. The refreshment stand is on the National Register of Historic Places. The pond is surrounded by an array of hiking trails within the Blue Hills Reservation. The area is most popular in the summer for swimming and cook-outs.

Full Hike (WM): The Sprawling Blue Hills Reservation Just Outside of Boston, Massachusetts
Just outside of Boston proper, away from venerable universities and Revolutionary landmarks, is this outdoor island in the city. There are an incredible 125 miles of trails stuffed into a minuscule 15.5 square mile reserve. The lopsided ratio produces a park map that resembles webs weaved by some particularly disorganized arthropods. Trails are represented by colors, shapes, and line types. They loop and intersect; there are many, many intersections. At least, some are numbered.
The single longest route to explore the reservation is the Skyline Trail. While the trail crosses only hills and is average in length (9 miles), do not take it lightly. Some of the inclines are mercilessly steep. Area hikers even use Skyline to train for country-crossing treks or major peaks around the world.
The crown of this hike would be the tallest Great Blue Hill. On top, there are few national historic places to visit: the weather station, an observation tower, and a memorial bridge. The weather station is oldest continuously operating in the United States, and the tower (named Eliot Tower) offers an almost 360-degree view of Greater Boston.
Neighboring the tower is the bridge. It is a sturdy dedication, to a long ago pioneering individual. It was meant to last. Today, hikers can rest on bridge benches, to enjoy a sense of magical solitude. To momentarily break away from where the sparks of revolution were ignited.

My Thoughts:
I think the Boston area is fortunate to have this space in such close proximity. There are many activities for everyone to enjoy, in all seasons. I was surprised by the amount of trails to explore. Park officials do a splendid job of clarifying different routes and numbering the intersections.
I did not fully complete the Skyline Trail, which required continuing west after the weather station. That was both a logistical and personal decision. Logistics required returning to my parked vehicle at the headquarters, and to cover both branches of the trail starting from there. I read that the north branch has better views, therefore decided to hike down that way. And, personally, I did not think it was worthwhile hike all the way to the interstate. Distance wise, mine was equivalent to if I had continued on.

Ponkapoag Pond cedar bog boardwalk and trails in Canton Massachusetts
2013-09-28 Cameraman loves to take photos in the autumn. No matter how many times cameraman visited Houghton's Pond and (other parts of) Blue Hills Reservation (which, according to the Reservation's own map, includes Ponkapoag) in recent years, but he always misses the chance to walk/hike at Ponkapoag Pond, which is overlapping Canton, Milton, and Randolph. It's just the perfect day (sunny, 60's F) to take a walk there. From its north side entrance, it's a 5-minute to get to the entrance of the cedar bog boardwalk, which is several hundred feet long. At the end of the boardwalk, one could clearly see a panoramic view of Ponkapoag Pond by standing on a floating piece of wood. Bumping into so many polite, respectful, and chatty people along the way was definitely a nice bonus! From the north entrance, through the entire stretch of the boardwalk, to the golf course/dam, the entire hike (which is a little less than half of the entire roundtrip around the pond) took less than an hour to finish, which is a great short walk/hike.

A decent glimpse of the easier trails we run in the blue hills. This was going over Boyce Hill from Houghton's to Chickatawbut with some pretty boring narration.
