The iconic 'HOUND TOR' - A Craggy Outcrop in Dartmoor National Park, UK
This Craggy Outcrop is typical of Dartmoor peaks.
Dartmoor is an area of moorland in southern Devon, England. Protected by National Park status as Dartmoor National Park, it covers 954 km2 (368 sq mi).[1]
The granite which forms the uplands dates from the Carboniferous Period of geological history. The moorland is capped with many exposed granite hilltops known as tors, providing habitats for Dartmoor wildlife. The highest point is High Willhays, 621 m (2,037 ft) above sea level. The entire area is rich in antiquities and archaeology.
Dartmoor is managed by the Dartmoor National Park Authority, whose 22 members are drawn from Devon County Council, local district councils and Government.
Parts of Dartmoor have been used as military firing ranges for over 200 years. The public is granted extensive land access rights on Dartmoor (including restricted access to the firing ranges) and it is a popular tourist destination.
United States:
The United States of America (USA), commonly known as the United States (U.S.) or America (/əˈmɛrɪkə/), is a federal republic[16][17] composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major self-governing territories, and various possessions.[fn 6] Forty-eight states and the federal district are contiguous and located in North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwest corner of North America, bordered by Canada to the east and across the Bering Strait from Russia to the west. The state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific Ocean. The U.S. territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, stretching across nine official time zones. The extremely diverse geography, climate and wildlife of the United States make it one of the world's 17 megadiverse countries.[19]
At 3.8 million square miles (9.8 million km2)[20] and with over 324 million people, the United States is the world's third- or fourth-largest country by total area,[fn 7] and the third-most populous. The capital is Washington, D.C., and the largest city is New York City; twelve other major metropolitan areas—each with at least 4.5 million inhabitants—are Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Riverside.

Dartmoor National Park Views : Hound Tor
Hound Tor is a tor on Dartmoor, Devon, England and is a good example of a heavily weathered granite outcrop. It is easily accessible, situated within a few minutes from the B3387 between Bovey Tracey and Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Baring Gould said that it derived its name from the shape assumed by the blocks on the summit that have been weathered into forms resembling the heads of dogs peering over the natural battlements.

According to legend, this Tor was created when a pack of ancient hounds were turned into stone, hence the name ‘Hound Tor’.
It is also thought to have inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.

Hound Tor Dartmoor - Devon Holidays
Scenes of Hound Tor on Dartmoor. Spectacular granite rocks inspired Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to his Hounds of the Baskervilles. The Dartmoor National Park is a popular tourist attraction in Devon, England.
Dartmoor National Park
England still has a few wild places like the Dartmoor National Park. The park is located in Devon on the southwest coast Once it was filled with trees but thousands of years ago the climate changed and so did the landscape. The moors are filled with the ruins of ancient stone age villages and stone circles. There is so much to see in Dartmoor from the wild ponies that make their home on the wind swept land to the rocky outcroppings called Tors that inspired the Hound of the Baskervilles.
