The Jagat Seths were a rich business, banking and money lender family from Murshidabad, Bengal region in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent, during the time of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula.

Jain Acharya Sri Bhratruchandra Suri was his spiritual guru. The Seths were among the most powerful bankers of India during the first half of 18th century. Roben Orme (official historian of East India Company) described Jagat Seths as the greatest shroff (money changer) and banker in the known world.

Known for Role in Battle of Plassey.
Jain Acharya Sri Bhratruchandra Suri was his spiritual guru. The Seths were among the most powerful bankers of India during the first half of 18th century. Roben Orme (official historian of East India Company) described Jagat Seths as the greatest shroff (money changer) and banker in the known world.
The Jagat Seths were unrivalled in northern India for their financial power. Known as 'banker of the world', this Marwari family had build up formidable economic resources on the back of its control of the imperial mint and extensive moneylending. They wielded this financial clout at the Bengali court and were judged to be 'the chief cause of revolutions in Bengal' by a French commentator at the time. He, along with Omichund and Mir Jafar joined the successful conspiracy against the Nawab, engineered by Robert Clive, due to which the Nawab lost the battle of Plassey. The British East India company thus emerged as a major power broker in India.
Mir Jafar became the ruler of Bengal with the support of East India company. The Jagat Seth family were beheaded in 1763, during the reign of Mir Jafar's successor, by the troops of Mir Qasim. Mir Qasim was initially supported by the East India Company as he was in friendly terms, but later he had attempted to curb their power and throw them out of Eastern India.

জগৎ শেঠ আসলে কোন বিশেষ ব্যক্তি বোঝায় না। সবচেয়ে ধনী লোকদেরকে জগৎশেঠ বোঝার। নবাব সিরাজউদ্দৌলার সাথে বিশ্বাসঘাতকতার জন্য জগৎশেঠ একজনই। তাকে টাকা মুদ্রণের দায়িত্ব দেয়া হয়েছিল। এখনকার মতো বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক ও ছিল না টাকা জগৎশেঠরা ছাপতো। তাই তারা বিশ্বের সেরা ধনী। নবাবদের বিশ্বস্ত না হলে টাকা ছাপতেই বা দেবে কেন ? মনের কোনে কোথাও একটা ক্ষোভ হয়তোবা ছিল। সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠ হিন্দু কিন্তু শাসক মুসলমান।

Namak Haram Deorhi ( নিমকহারাম দেউড়ী ) was the palace of Mir Jafar. It is located just opposite to the Jafarganj ( জাফরগঞ্জ ) Cemetery in the Lalbagh ( লালবাগ ) area of the town of Murshidabad ( মুর্শিদাবাদ ) and near Mahimapur in the Indian state of West Bengal. Namak Haram Deorhi ( নিমকহারাম দেউড়ী ) refers to both the place of Mir Jafar and ( মীরজাফর ) the main gate which leads to the palace. This building was used as the residence of Mir Jafar, before he ascended the musnad of Bengal or when he was the Commander-in-Chief of the subha.

The ancient secret road of the Nawabi period at Murshidabad

In the Kathgola Bagan near Hazarduari palace the ancient secret road of the Nawabi period at Murshidabad. It is a very important historical place of the Nawabi period. After coming to this place this is what I learned about the history of this secret road is at that time the road was used for secret business purposes with Jagat Seth. Now the Ganges water has entered this tunnel and the road is completely closed. This Kathgola garden in Murshidabad is associated with much of British history in India. Now the place is a great place for tourists.
