Spirit of Tasmania - Flavours of Tassie Showcase House of Anvers
Chocaholics across the nation are drawn to Tasmania's famous chocolate factory, the House of Anvers. In this video, part of the 'Flavours of Tassie' showcase series; Belgium born Igor Van Gerwen begins by relating the history of how he began creating his beautiful confectionary goods. Arriving in Tasmania in 1986, he honed his skills working as a pastry chef in Devonport and experimented with traditional Belgium truffle-making in the evenings. As his sweet creations continued to delight more and more local tastebuds, Igor expanded his chocolate delivery to outlets all across Australia.
If you're a fan of chocolate (and let's face it who isn't) you owe it to yourself to visit the House of Anvers factory and witness the chocolates being made. Igor uses Tasmanian produce in his creations, including dairy cream, butter and milk from Ashgrove Farm, Hellyers Road whiskey and fresh berries from Christmas Hills Raspberry farm. There is also an historic museum at the House of Anvers that displays Igor's personal collection of chocolate tins, moulds, advertising posters and other treasures he has accumulated over the years of following his passion of chocolate making.
There is a House of Anvers tasting plate available as a dessert item on our Leatherwood menu and fudges available from The Lavender Café.
