Tour of Boulder Colorado
Boulder has been named the #1 city in the nation in Gallup's Well Being Index. It is also the most educated city in the United States. Today, I'm going to take you on a tour of Boulder Colorado my hometown. Here is my view of why Boulder is such an attractive place to call home.
The first thing that comes to mind is the lifestyle. Boulder is situated where the Rocky Mountains meet the great plains. The transition is dramatic and the geography in and around Boulder are an outdoor playground. Everywhere you look you will see people out biking, hiking, running or just enjoying the natural beauty.
Contrary to popular opinion, we are blessed with a fantastic climate. We have four seasons but over 300 days of sunshine. When we do get snow it often melts within a day. You can find heavy snow cover and cold up in Colorado's high country but on the Front Range you can enjoy the outdoors every month of the year. Boulder is a haven for world class athletes, but you don't have to be an Olympian to take advantage of the thousands of acres of open space surrounding Boulder.
Boulder's economy is strong and is sparked by the University of Colorado. CU is the city's largest employer but just as important is the innovation that has sparked a high tech and entrepreneurial boom. Boulder is known nationwide as one of the hotbeds for start-up companies. High tech, bio-tech, aerospace and renewable energy are just a few of the local industries that keep Boulder vital. We also have many government and research institutions such as NCAR, NOAA and NIST. Boulder is filled with smart people. In fact Boulder has the highest percentage of people with an advanced degree in the entire country.
Boulder's has tons of opportunities for shopping and dining. Right downtown is the world famous Pearl Street Mall but in addition to this shopping and eating area there are many smaller areas with quality food and shopping scattered all over town. The restaurants are outstanding and there is a great diversity in the types of restaurants available.
Many people who could live anywhere in the world choose to live in Boulder. People are casual and friendly. As long as you are quick to give a smile and ready to meet nice people it's easy to fit right in. Boulder has had a very stable housing market. Many years ago local tax payers decided to pay for open space through a sales tax. Thirty years later Boulder is surrounded by open space. This has made the houses and land within Boulder very valuable. Boulder's most expensive real estate is typically west of Broadway near the mountains. These neighborhoods tend to be an easy walk to downtown or to hiking trails. You will find that Boulder is made up of many small neighborhoods and the best way to get to know the different sections is to explore.
With Boulder's educated population, it is not surprising that Boulder has great schools. Boulder Valley School Districts schools consistently rank near the top in the state and offer many advanced programs and excellent extracurricular activities.
I hope that gives you a glimpse of what Boulder is all about. I'm convinced that Boulder is one of the great places in the world to call home. If you are thinking about making Boulder your next home call me, I'd love to show you around. I'm a Boulder native and have been a top producing Realtor in Boulder for 20 years. Have a fantastic day!

The rise and fall of the American fallout shelter
Whatever happened to fallout shelters? And would they have actually worked?
Watch Duck and Cover with us:
Phil Edwards on Facebook:
In this episode of Vox Almanac, Vox's Phil Edwards looks at the history behind one of the Cold War's more unusual legacies — the fallout shelter. Of course, any history of the fallout shelter has to include nuclear proliferation, civil defense, Presidential politics, and a turtle named Bert.
The video above serves as a condensed history of the Cold War’s fallout shelter fad, from the kookily cheerful propaganda videos to the hobbled Federal agencies that tried to administer Civil Defense. Yes, it includes the classic Cold War film Duck and Cover, in which a bomb-fearing turtle named Bert teaches kids that hiding under their desks could be sufficient protection from nuclear annihilation.
Any history of fallout shelter culture (and Cold War propaganda) becomes an indirect history of Cold War nuclear escalation, from Hiroshima-sized bombs to hydrogen behemoths. As the nuclear threat increased in magnitude, the absurdity of civil defense amped up simultaneously.
This video (and a day spend trawling the Internet Archive for darkly humorous videos) provides a more intimate portrait of Cold War paranoia as it was lived. Paired with Kenneth Rose’s comprehensive book about fallout shelter culture, it’s a look at daily life with the bomb — even when that daily life included the occasional jaunt to a thick-walled concrete bunker a few feet underground.

Great Horned Owl Hooting Territorial Evening Call At Sunset
Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) calling for it's mate on Dixon Branch of White Rock Creek in Dallas, Texas. This particular owl was hooting a territorial call for another owl that can be faintly heard some distance away beginning after the call around the 1:50 mark. The owls call to each other in a duet before finding each other for night hunting and nest building.
Found from the Arctic to the tropical rainforest, from the desert to suburban backyards, the Great Horned Owl is one of the most widespread and common owls in North America. Capable of killing prey larger than themselves, the Great Horned Owl is one of the larger winged predators in the United States.
Often heard but rarely seen the birds are very difficult to photograph since they are nocturnal. This video was shot using Canon Magic Lantern software which allows for extreme low light photography. It was also filmed at a considerable distance giving the owl plenty of space to act naturally. The bird was a couple hundred feet from the camera. It's important to keep a code of ethics when around large predators such as this. They need a wide berth to not be stressed.

Lincoln's Ghost Train | Behind the Haunting #007
In this live video we will dive deep into the paranormal claims and reports about the ghostly apparition of the entire train that was used to transport President Abraham Lincoln from Washington D.C. back to Springfield, Ill. a.k.a. Lincolns Ghost Train (1865).
There are varying accounts of spectral funeral train sightings (Lincolns Ghost Train) of the old Union silently traveling through the night. Those who have seen the vision report that they have seen a train car draped in black housing a casket surrounded by mourners guarded by skeletal remains dressed in blue uniforms. The smoke stacks billow and bells clang but not of this time and place. A popular version of this story is one that has been retold many times stemming from a quote in the Albany Evening Times. This version is taken from The Pittsburgh Press (1978).
The train (Lincolns Ghost Train) always appeared in Albany on April 27th, the anniversary of its first passing. Track walkers and section hands would sit along the railroad tracks in the early evening of the fateful day and wait for the ghost train to come into view. At midnight—always at midnight—the engine would emerge from the darkness, moving silently down the track with black crepe flowing from its sides and emitting faintly audible sounds of funeral music.
The phantom train (Lincolns Ghost Train) would glide over a black carpet that appeared to cover the tracks, while spectral solders in blue uniforms, of the Union army trotted along side it. As the apparition moved down the tracks, it would fade from view over some phantom horizon
