House of Leaves SPY and SURVEILLANCE Museum (Budget Travel Albania) {Tirana, ALBANIA}
Budget Travel Albania #5
There was no escaping how the totalitarian government of Albania obtained information on its citizens.
The House of Leaves in Tirana was the country's headquarters for its spy agency. Now, as Matt learns, the building is a spy and surveillance museum as it documents what the government had documented.

STORYLINE
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton met Albanian leaders on Thursday on the final stop on her tour of the Balkans.
Clinton arrived in the capital Tirana after visiting Croatia.
She had meetings with Albania's Prime Minister Sali Berisha and President Bujar Nishani, before giving an address to the Albanian parliament.
Clinton's visit comes as Albania prepares to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of independence from the Ottoman Empire on November 28.
She promised that the United States would continue to stand with Albania, which is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
Clinton warned however, that for Albania's democracy to thrive, Albania's leaders will need to build a culture of cooperation that transcends political differences.
Albania's political system is in deadlock due to long running political feuds between the government and opposition, which are threatening to delay the country's bid to join the European Union.
In October, Albania received conditional EU candidate status, as long as it carries out reforms to the judiciary and and public administration and makes changes to parliamentary procedures.
Clinton urged politicians from all parties to work together to ensure the reforms are carried out.

Rescuers work into night after Albania quake
(26 Nov 2019) The search for survivors of the earthquake in Albania carried on into the night on Tuesday as rescue crews with excavators dug through the rubble of collapsed apartment blocks.
The quake struck before dawn as most residents were sleeping, and killed at least 18 people and injured more than 600.
There was no indication as to how many people might still be buried in the rubble, as neighboring countries and European Union nations sent search-and-rescue crews to help.
The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was just 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest of the capital, Tirana, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles).
Scores of aftershocks were recorded, included three with preliminary magnitudes of between 5.1 and 5.4.
The worst-hit areas were Durres, where 11 of the dead were found in collapsed buildings, and the northern town of Thumane, where another five bodies were pulled from the rubble.
The quake was felt along the Albanian coast as well as neighboring Kosovo, Montenegro, Greece, and parts of southern Serbia.

Demolition of Quake-Damaged Building in Albania
A remote-controlled explosion has demolished a six-story building considered a threat after it was damaged in an earthquake in Albania.
The earthquake damaged more than 11,000 buildings and left 3,000 people homeless. 51 people died and some 3,000 were injured.
Five other buildings in the towns of Durres and Tirana are expected to be demolished while structural engineers from Europe check the quake-hit areas.

Pope Francis arrives in Albania to promote religious harmony
Pope Francis has begun his first official European visit, touching down in Albania on Sunday (21 September) morning.
The pontiff was greeted by the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, when he touched down in Tirana for a one-day visit.
The Vatican said the pope had selected the impoverished Balkan country - instead of one of the wealthier European nations - out of a desire to show his concern for people on the margins.
The trip, including giving mass on Mother Teresa Square in central Tirana…

STORYLINE:
Albanian authorities said on Saturday some five thousand people have been evacuated and more than 2,400 houses flooded by a combination of rainfall and melting snow in the country''s northwestern Shkodra district, 75 miles (120 kilometres) north of the capital, Tirana.
The flood is the worst in almost half a century in that part of the country and could get even worse in the coming days due to predicted rough weather.
Some 25,000 acres (10,000 hectares) have been flooded from the water discharge from three hydropower stations at the Drini River, producing the bulk of Albania''s energy needs, after reaching their top levels following heavy rainfall.
Albania''s Minister of Defence, Arben Imami said the flooding was due to combination of heavy rain, heavy snow and an unusually big wave from the Adriatic sea.
European countries have sent emergency aid to northwestern Albania following Tirana''s request to the European Union and the NATO.
EU countries and Moldova have sent boats and helicopters, water pumps, power generators, clothes, tents, food and medicine.
Some 740 troops have been called up to evacuate residents from the area.

ALBANIA: TIRANA: US MARINES KILL INTRUDER AT US EMBASSY
Natural Sound
U-S Marines shot dead an off duty Albanian policeman on Sunday as he tried to scale the fence surrounding an American diplomatic compound.
Security guards had tried to stop the man with warning shots, but he fired back and was eventually gunned down.
The intruder died an hour later in an Albanian military hospital.
A lone gunman was shot dead by security guards at the U-S Embassy in Tirana on Sunday after trying to invade a diplomatic compound.
The man, an off-duty Albanian police officer, was trying to scale the compound wall, but his motive is not known.
The policeman, identified as Shkelqim Shehu, 35, entered the embassy grounds from the rear.
One source described the shootout as a minor incident which had nothing to do with fears of a possible terrorist attack.
U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has told reporters that the government believes the gunman was acting alone, though she said there are continuing security concerns about all American embassies.
The United States boosted security at their Tirana embassy this week and evacuated American citizens after officials said they received evidence of a planned terrorist attack on the embassy.
At the Ambassador's residential compound, security was also stepped up.

Apocalyptic Doomsday Bunkers Part II
BUnkers might be made because of sheer paranoia and have never been used before. Massive amounts of resources and construction efforts have been made to protect people from catastrophic disasters in the unforeseen future. Others have been made in an effort to win conflicts and are now just big national museums. Today we dig even deeper to see how people are protecting themselves from theoretical doom. Here are Apocalyptic Doomsday Bunkers Part Two.
12. Diefenbunker
This doomsday military facility is found in a rural area near Ottawa, Canada and you probably wouldn’t have expected a massive apocalyptic underground bunker in this area. However, it is close to the Capital of Canada and they need to prepare for attacks too. During the begining of the cold war, this was constructed to protect various high ranking canadian government officials in case of nuclear annihilation. 32,000 tons of concrete were brought in to reinforce the bunker as well as 5000 tons of steel were brought in to this remote area. It was designed to withstand a blast of up to 5 megatons and had massive doors at the surface to prevent radiation leakage. Underground storage would have held plenty of food, water and other supplies, and even some gold vaults belonging to the Bank of Canada. Eventually the site was abandoned when groundwater proved to be to difficult to remove. It’s now operating as a museum since 1998 with 358 rooms on display.
11. Bunker 42
The Soviet Union made some pretty good preparations to survive a nuclear apocalypse as we’re about to see. In modern times, it’s transformed into a tourist attraction! After a series of nuclear testing, scientists came to a conclusion that bunkes should be about 165 feet below the surface of the ground in order survive nuclear fallout conditions. Bunker 42 is the only bomb shelter of its kind that’s open to the public from a metro tunnel. This construction project nearly seemed in impossible that far underground, right below the city center, but it was eventually finished in 1956 with a total of 75,000 square feet of space for survivors. In the 1960’s it was fully stocked with food and fresh water in the case of a nuclear war. Around 2001, Russia cut funding to the project and 5 years later it was sold at public auction for 65 million rubles. Today, tourists enjoy it as a unique museum that’s complete with a restaurant, a model of a primitive nuclear bomb and even a nightclub!
10 Trementina Base
A doomsday bunker where aliens are invited? Say no more! This bizarre scientologist religious facility was discovered on satellites and it leaves many to wonder “what's going on out there”. Many don’t know this bizarre facility is just as strong as a military base and even holds an extremely secure underground vault. This is found in the middle of the New Mexico desert and supposedly holds the films, writings and recordings of L Ron Hubbard, their founder. They also have invested millions of dollars in this stronghold and is still unknown by many people that it even exists. There seems to be 3 main parts of this compound, the runway, the spiritual technology ranch and then the base which seems like a house from above. Given the amount of money this organization has, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise if there’s an apocalyptic nuclear bunker in there. Rumor has it, the area has private guards who are heavily armed with sniper rifles and keep an eye out for trespassers. The base is complete with aerial symbols for alien life in order to mark the landing location of where to find Hubbard's works.
9. Tirana Nuclear Bunker
The soviets also had bunkers in their satellite states across europe and this one here is located in the capital city of Albania, known as Tirana. It seemed to make sense to have some safe spaces for isolated dictators. Any city could really be a target during a period of nuclear retaliation. Mutually assured destruction would mean hundreds of nuclear missiles landing in important cities of both the americans and the soviets but albania was an outcast and thought that both the US and Soviets would attack them. A top secret bunker was constructed from 1981-1986 to shelter interior ministry officals of the union but has done a total 180 and is now an art exhibit. It’s believed that during the time it was built, thousands of other bunkers in albania were constructed. This would be utilised by the dictator Enver Hoxha who was constantly paranoid of being invaded by the neighboring superpowers.

NATO will help but they are very nervous people. If a terrorist fires only one bullet they will be afraid. They should be persistent because if they are lenient they will do no good here.

STORYLINE:
There are concerns in Macedonia that months of conflict have done irreversible damage to the country's inter-ethnic relations.
Both local inhabitants and humanitarian observers say that in areas particularly affected by fighting the two communities may be unable to live with each other again.
Mixed villages like this one on the outskirts of the capital Skopje are becoming increasingly rare in Macedonia.
Here in Sisevo, ethnic Albanian and Macedonian villagers have been living side by side in relative harmony for years.
Recent events have threatened to upset this mutual tolerance, but so far calm has prevailed.
Ethnic Albanian rebels have been fighting government security forces since February.
The rebels say they have been fighting for more rights, but their advances have infuriated Macedonians, who say they simply want their own state.
As the crisis escalated, neighbours in mixed villages like this became suspicious of one another.
Then when rebel advances pushed out Macedonian residents living in villages near the country's second-largest city, Tetovo, simmering anxiety was often transformed into outright hostility.
Macedonians rioted in the country's capital, Skopje, and other cities, destroying mosques and ethnic Albanian businesses.
But as the crisis grew ever more strained, the people of Sisevo have vowed not to become divided along ethnic lines.
Both sides are determined to remain integrated and to keep their village intact.
As NATO troops prepare for the first step of their peace keeping mission- to determine whether the country is stable enough to start an effort to collect rebel weapons- villagers here are optimistic their presence will be effective.
But they warn that NATO must stand firm against the rebels, and stop the flow of arms from Kosovo.

STORYLINE:
U.S. President George W. Bush ventured into Serbia's recovering Kosovo province Tuesday, telling U.S. troops he hopes to speed up the day when peace is self-sustaining in Kosovo, and they can go home.
Bush told the troops their mission in Kosovo is vital to block those who use religious and ethnic differences as a license to kill.
The fact that the ranks of the U.S. military are so diverse, Bush said, serves as an example of peaceful coexistence for Serbs and ethnic Albanians.
Our goal is to hasten the day when peace is self-sustaining, when local democratically elected authorities can assume full responsibility, and when NATO forces can go home, Bush said.
Bush told the soldiers that until that day, they play a pivotal role in stanching the flow of arms to rebels who seek to incite violence in Macedonia.
He repeated his pledge that the United States will not back out of its NATO peacekeeping commitments in the Balkans, saying, We came in together and we will leave together.
Bush flew in to the sprawling U.S. military base of Camp Bondsteel from Italy, where he had attended the Group of Eight economic summit.
His stopover in Kosovo was to last 3 1/2 hours.
