A guesthouse deep in west Japan's countryside is attracting thousands of tourists for its unique lighting.
The House of Light was created by artist James Turrell 17 years ago.
Its manager explains how he has used shadow and light to create a sanctuary for guests to meditate in.

니가타에 봄이 오면 사케 축제가 열린다. 각 양조장이 햇술을 놓고 경합을 벌인다. 니가타의 대표적인 양조장 한 곳을 찾아갔다. 200 여 년의 역사를 지닌 양조 명가다. 옛날 술 창고에 집안의 역사를 정리해 놨다. 술을 숙성시키던 술통과 술을 눌러 짜던 압착기, 여전히 술 향이 풍기는 듯 했다. 술도가는 공장으로 바뀌었지만 술을 만드는 방식은 변함이 없다. 일본 술, 사케는 쌀을 어느 정도 정미했느냐에 따라 등급이 달라진다. 쌀을 많이 깎아낼수록 전분만이 남아 술맛이 나아진다고 한다. “이건 쌀을 50% 깎은 5분 도미입니다. 가장 좋은 술은 약 60% 정도 정미하여 35-40% 정도 남은 백미로 만듭니다.” 사케는 찐쌀과 누룩을 여러 단계 발효시키며 술맛을 만들어간다. 이 과정에서 잡균이 침입하게 되면 술맛이 상해버린다. 그래서 겨울이 사케 생산의 적기라고 한다. 석달 정도의 발효를 거쳐 말간 술이 탄생했다. 새 술의 시음은 사장이 직접 챙긴다. 먼저 맑고 고운 빛인지 색깔을 확인하고, 향기를 맡아 본 후, 혀를 굴려 맛을 본다.

hiking and farming experience trips, as well as the revitalization of fallow fields.
