House of Nicholas Copernicus in Torun, Poland
House of Nicholas Copernicus in Torun is located at street Copernicus 15/17. It is the probable birthplace of the astronomer. This is a group of two late-Gothic buildings from the late fifteenth century, rebuilt in the nineteenth century and reconstructed in 1960 - 1963. During the reconstruction the old internal structure and facade were restored (from the late fifteenth century). The building is an example of Torun Gothic houses of the Hanseatic merchants. The house No. 15 has a rich facade from the fourteenth century, restored in 1972. Its tracery painted decoration was restored during the renovation work in 1992 - 1994. Historically, Copernicus Street was named St. Anne Street. Currently, both buildings house a branch of the Regional Museum in Torun.

POLAND: TORUN: POPE TO VISIT HOME TOWN OF COPERNICUS
Natural Sound
Pope John Paul II is expected to visit the home town of Polish astronomer Copernicus later on Monday
The pontiff will meet Torun University professors where he will broach the subject of science and religion.
Pope John Paul II will be visiting the town of Torun on the birthday of the famous Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus.
Copernicus was born in 1473 and made the revolutionary discovery that the sun and not the earth is at the centre of the solar system.
The theory was first published in 1534 in his book De Revolutibus Orbium Caelestium, which was then hastily added to the Vatican's list of forbidden volumes.
The astronomer sent a letter to Pope Paul III explaining the effects of his theory but never got a reply.
SOUNDBITE: (Polish)
Realising the importance of his great revolution and how people would react to it, he felt obliged to share his doubts with the highest authority of those times, Pope Paul III
SUPER CAPTION: Janina Mazurjiewicz, Curator
The Vatican's stance at that time was faith is right and science is wrong.
It wasn't until 1822 that the ban on Copernicus' book was lifted.
The pontiff's pilgrimage that began Saturday in Gdansk is part nostalgic and part purposeful for John Paul II, who seeks to halt a recent slide in the influence of his church.

Nicolaus Copernicus (19 February 1473 - 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance mathematician and astronomer who formulated a heliocentric model of the universe which placed the Sun, rather than the Earth, at the center. The publication of Copernicus' book, De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1543, is considered a major event in the history of science. It began the Copernican Revolution and contributed importantly to the scientific revolution. Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia, a region of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466. Copernicus had a doctorate in canon law and, though without degrees, was a physician, polyglot, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat, and economist who in 1517 set down a quantity theory of money, a principal concept in economics to the present day, and formulated a version of Gresham's law in the year 1519, before Gresham. Nicolaus Copernicus was born on 19 February 1473 in the city of Toruń (Thorn), in the province of Royal Prussia, in the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland. His father was a merchant from Kraków and his mother was the daughter of a wealthy Toruń merchant. Nicolaus was the youngest of four children. His brother Andreas (Andrew) became an Augustinian canon at Frombork (Frauenburg). His sister Barbara, named after her mother, became a Benedictine nun and, in her final years, prioress of a convent in Chełmno (Kulm); she died after 1517. His sister Katharina married the businessman and Toruń city councilor Barthel Gertner and left five children, whom Copernicus looked after to the end of his life. Copernicus never married or had children.

Toruń,Poland was founded by the Teutonic Order, in the 13th century. The unique spatial layout of Toruń has remained unchanged for 700 years.
During the Middle Ages it developed a commercial role as part of the Hanseatic League. In the Old and New Town, imposing buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries (among them the house of Copernicus) are striking evidence of Toruń's rich past.
A Gothic town hall built in the late 14th century is the centrepiece of Torun’s old town. It is one of the biggest brick buildings of its kind in Europe. For centuries, it was the administrative and commercial hub of the city; it was near here that fairs were held, tribute was paid to the rulers, knights fought in tournaments, and the condemned were publically executed. Today, the building houses a district museum, where visitors can see local handicraft and Polish paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.
One of the medieval tenements from the second half of the 15th century houses the Home of Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who proved that the Earth does not sit at the centre of universe, but rather orbits the sun along with other planets.
Torun’s medieval city walls are the oldest in Poland. Their first section dates back to 1246-62. Almost from its very beginnings, the city was surrounded by two rings of defence walls separated by a wet moat. A single wall was only built along the Vistula riverside. A three-kilometre long section of Torun’s city walls had 54 towers, 12 gates and two barbicans proper. Nine towers and three gates have survived to this day.
An old Teutonic castle was part of the city’s defences alongside high walls, towers, and gates. Today, it is a favourite site for walks, theatre performances, and music concerts.
An attractive walking route is also Podmurna Street, Torun’s longest medieval street. This cobbled road is full of charming nooks and historic monuments. The street begins near the moat and the Burgher House, and weaves its way next to an historic granary, the Feline Head tower, and the Mint Gate.
Its 15-metre-high Leaning Tower constructed at the turn of the 14th century is inclined like the famous Tower of Pisa.
