30 Secrets & Things to do in Oslo, Norway
My new Oslo Travel Guide includes these carefully selected 30 best things to do & best places to visit in Oslo, Norway which I visited during a warm summer weekend including gems like the Frogner Park, Viking Ship Museum, Whale Sushi, Stratos rooftop, eating black licorice ice cream and tips for the vibrant Oslo nightlife. Subscribe to my channel ► for weekly videos!
I did not have high expectations for Oslo but during this warm summer weekend the city offers many outdoor attractions, a great place to start is Aker Brygge to try the local delicacy Polse, a fancy hot dog rolled in bacon and injected with cheese than from Aker Brygge walk to the other popular attractions like the Royal Palace, Karl Johans Gate shopping street, Vippa, the Opera House or Sorenga Sjobad outdoor beach deck.
Oslo is the capital of Norway and its metropolitan area has a population of 1.5 million including their royal family since Norway is a kingdom and is the only country in the world with territories in both the Arctic and Antarctica.
Be smart and buy the OSLO PASS to save lots of money on attractions and transportation!
Oslo Pass: just $50 USD
Take the Oslo SUPER tour including the 2-hour cruise:
ONLY $40 USD

One important thing you must keep in mind; Oslo is extremely expensive and is rated one of the most expensive city in the world by Forbes Magazine, to give you an example, a simple hot dog will set you back $6 US dollars and that is considered on the cheap side.
In return for being an expensive city you get a very safe and easy going Scandinavian city experience. Public transit is easy to use and many signs and menus at restaurants are in English. The most bizarre dish I've had must have been the Brown Cheese Ice Cream for which you'll have to watch my Oslo video.
The Frogner Park must have been the most unique sculpture park I've ever been to, it is world's largest sculpture park by a single artist. Created by Gustav Vigeland between 1924 and 1943 with incredible sculptures like the angry boy and consist out of 200 works.
My favorite museum in Oslo is the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History for having a lot of great performances, historic foods and snacks to try and the overall feeling like you got transported back to the Viking ages.
Out of the blue I received a Facebook message from my American buddy Andrew who was coincidentally stopping by Oslo on his way home from the Arctic Norwegian island Svalbard to the United States. I met up with him and his girlfriend at the famous fish restaurant Fiskeriet Youngtorget for the freshest Norwegian salmon I've ever tasted.
After lunch I took my friends to the Akershus Fortress for the best view of Oslo and a little historic tour through Norway's Resistance Museum which teaches about the Nazi occupation of Norway during WW2.
For dinner I wanted to try true Norwegian cuisine and luckily Rorbua on Aker Brygge is known for having some of the best dishes in town. I ordered the Tastes of Norway meat stick with meats; Whale, Deer, Beef & Reindeer. An incredible dish with as winner: Reindeer for being extremely juicy, this dish cost me around $45 US dollars and don't forget to add the typical Norwegian beer Hansa.
Before the night falls, grab a few cocktails at either the Magic Ice Bar for some Norwegian Ice Wine or on top of the Thief Rooftop patio for the most upscale cocktail bar in town.
In conclusion, Oslo is a great 2 to 3-day stop over during the summer to enjoy a few outdoor activities, learn about the history of Norway and make many new friends, especially during the weekend nightlife of Oslo but for that you'll have to read my next article.

Why: Very lively & open nightlife!

Oslo is a small town with only 600,000 inhabitants you'd think there isn't much to do in Oslo. Well, you may be pleasantly surprised. Oslo has a lot of great bars & night clubs to offer but the only downside; Oslo is VERY expensive and venues close at 3:00am but that shouldn't prevent you from having an amazing time.
I recommend you start your evening in the Grünerløkka hipster district, this renovated district has quite a few great places to grab a few drinks like Blå & Bortenfor easily located right next to each other. Blå is often considered the best place to be on a Sunday.
In the downtown core of Oslo there is a bar alley way called Strøget which houses a conglomerate of bars namely; Uhørt, Angst, Den Gamle Stobutikken and Karusell all great for socializing and a few beers.
My favorite venue in Oslo is Kulturhuset, a massive social complex with ping-pong tables, fussball, multiple stories of bars and multiple dance floors. I met so many incredible locals at this place that I always ended my nights at this place. A must visit in Oslo!
For some good ol' fist pumpin' and beats head over to NOX/Sollihagen for a young Norwegian crowd or Stratos for an upscale EDM rooftop party with incredible views of Oslo. Alternatively, there is the Lawo lounge where you can mingle with the high rollers and upscale peeps of Oslo. Make sure to try the true Norwegian shots: Akvavit or Aquavit, this extremely strong liquor will have you question your new found Norwegian friends.
If you are an electro head or techno music enthusiast there is a great club called The Villa, this place often featured world famous techno DJ's. End your night with an epic pork knuckle wrap from the Crowbar & Brewery on the Torggata street where you will also find Cafe Sara. In conclusion, Oslo is a small, expensive but amazing city for a few days of sightseeing and making new Norwegian friends.

TINY HOME VILLAGE in Norway! (incredible sauna & outdoor shower)
We love staying in unique accommodations when we travel, and this tiny home village in Norway definitely goes down as one of our favorite places we’ve ever slept! We drove 2 hours from Stavanger to Vinddalen, then hiked 2 hours to Skåpet where we slept in what was basically a tiny home village. It was also the first self-service cabin we've ever stayed in, plus there was a sauna!
Here's where you can book a night at this incredible place -

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the #travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :) #norway #travelvlog

5. Visnes Statue of Liberty
Take a look at this photo of lady liberty standing tall with all her might. She’s well known as a symbol of freedom, and has welcomed foreign immigrants into the United States. But hold on a minute! What’s she doing in Norway!? Turns out, Lady Liberty isn’t 100 percent American or French and is actually 100 percent Norwegian copper. The small town of Visnes was once home to a large deposit of copper during the construction of the statue of Liberty and this town is quite certain that the copper came from them! We asked lady liberty--- if this was true and she had no comment.
4. Norwegian Prisons
Norway is a country which is high on human rights, they’ve even banned walmart from their country due to questions about where they get their products. So it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that Norwegian Prisons are some of the best in the world! Some might even have more accommodations than luxury hotels! Here in this photo taken at Skien prison, you notice a private bathroom and shower to the right and a decent flat screen to the left, and really looks more like a dorm room than a prison cell. There’s even been a case, where an american was caught smuggling drugs in Norway and they refused to send him back the US, since they considered our prisons to be inhumane! Other amenities include, playstations, private gyms, internet access, and kitchens. Norway still doesn’t have a lot of crime and with only 5 million residents, they just don’t have a ton of people to lock up!
3. Urnes Stave Church
You might be thinking to yourself hey, what’s so strange and amazing about a church in Europe! We see those all the time! Well this isn’t just any old church in Europe, this is one of the first churchs actually built by the Vikings and unlike many churches in Europe you're accustomed to seeing like the Notre Dame, this one is made out of wood! It shows extremely detailed wooden carvings on the walls and throughout the doors. This is situated alongside a picturesque fjord and has been around since the 12 century AD.
2. Oscarsborg Fortress
Norse historay isn’t just limited to vikings, they also played an interesting role in world war II as were about to see. This is situated on two small islands and it’s well known for shooting down a heavy german cruiser in April of 1940. The Norwegian Fjords prove to be excellent places for placing naval ships, however the fort had outdated weaponry and Norway became under Nazi occupation the next month. You can still see parts of the torpedos that were once stored here and 28 cm guns that pointed east. Don’t forget to explore the underground bunkers made of reinforced concrete and the old barracks that were built in 1893
1.Pyramiden
The strangest place in Norway has to be the completely abandoned settlement of Pyramiden located on the Norwegian territory of Svalbard to the North! The soviet arctic ghost town was once prosperous due to large coal deposits in the area but now that the coal is gone since 1998, so are the people. However, Norway has been hoping to turn this into somewhat of a tourist attraction. Not being situated to far from the regional capital of Longyearbyen, it’s a quick hour ride by snowmobile or a few hours by dogsled. If you do decide to come here be sure to dress warm and try not to get too spooked out by all the abandoned things here!

Norway Travel: There's a Beach Scene in Oslo??
A secret garden in Oslo - uncut guided tour by Mads
A crash walk through the Botanic Garden. Uncut and real time. Even if Oslo is out of proportion hot and people melt, this little oasis in the middle of the capital is not very crowded. As said, we have 30 degrees Celcius every day, which is quite a game changer for Oslo in borderliine May/June. We are going crazy, we sweat, we seek shelter, and ice whenever the temperature raises above 5 degrees C in the red direction. And – as a nasty paradox, an oil spill, has made the beaches in the fjord polluted; its forbidden to bath there. People seeks out the most remote islands, but they are not taking shelter here!! “Botanisk hage” or “The botanic garden” is a beautiful green space, like a mini version of the Central Park. (Sorry for the not so very flattering gasping/out of air sound that pollutes the soundtrack, the garden was a bit bigger than I thought – note to self; cut down smoking). Best Mads (not Ronald, this time).
