DIY Itinerary from Taipei to YEHLIU, JIUFEN, & SHIFEN, TAIWAN - Nognog in the City
Before we visited Taiwan, I made sure that we will be including Yehliu, Jiufen and Shifen in our itinerary. So, we allocated a whole day to travel to these destination.
It is not that hard to do a DIY trip in the said destination. Even though it is located in the Northern part of Taiwan, the transportation system in Taiwan made it easier to go to and from. So you would not need to rent a car or hire a tour guide to visit the place, especially if you are on a budget.
Check out the video to find out more about it.

Shifen Waterfall Taiwan, Shifen Old Street PLUS Jiufen Lanterns
The best day trip from Taipei is to take the train to Shifen, explore the old town with its famous railway that runs through the middle of the street, visit Shifen Waterfall and then take the bus to Jiufen Old Street - the town that inspired the movie Spirited Away. Think beautiful lanterns, an enormous flowing waterfall and a little bit of magic.
Wondering how to get from Taipei to Shifen Old Street? Take the Keelung-bound train to Ruifang (a ticket cost 78 Taiwanese dollars, or about US $2.50) then transfer to the Pingxi line and ride that all the way to the end. A day pass for this lines costs about US $2.

Taipei Main Station can be extremely confusing to anyone including long time residents. I've tried to keep instructions on how to navigate the huge complex simple and if you follow the advice I give, mainly just using the signs above you for directions you shouldn't have too much difficulty getting around. I focused on the Taipei Main Station building where you'll find places to eat, shop, buy train tickets, the Airport MRT, the bus station located at the East Side of the main building, and the other MRT lines. If you are wanting to travel by bus to other parts of Taiwan including the Eastcoast, Central, and Southern Taiwan, then you'll need to go to Q Square where buses serve these regions of the island.
If you want to learn more about the Taipei Metro system and the Taoyuan Airport MRT then watch these videos:

A Day Trip From Taipei | Jiufen, Shifen & Pingxi
Complete BLOG POST GUIDE ????
Riding the railway to explore three charming, scenic and lantern filled small towns northeast of Taipei. And eating lots of Taiwanese street food along the way.
The old mining town of Jiufen, shrouded in mountain mist during our visit, is a feast for the eyes and the stomach. Narrow alleys, steep staircases and the ubiquitous red lanterns strung up as far as the eye can see. Made famous by its association with the Studio Ghibli film, 'Spirited Away', this wee charmer is no secret but the crowds didn't deter us.
Rolling into Shifen and Pingxi on the Pingxi District Railway line, we were surrounded by lush greenery, old streets full of character and a sky full of glowing lanterns. And more street food. Score.

Travel in Taiwan (Jan./Feb. 2017):
The Pingxi Branch Line
Riding the Pingxi Branch Line in New Taipei City is a journey into the past, as well as a jaunt into lush and scenic countryside that feels hundreds of miles apart from busy and crowded central Taipei, which is in fact just a quick bus or train trip away.
Buy a Day Pass!
There’s a lot to see between Haikeguan and Jingtong, so you might want to pick up a Pingxi Line 1-Day Pass (NT$80), which allows unlimited travel (and stops) along the length of what the Taiwan Railways Administration collectively calls the Pingxi/Shen’ao Line. Tickets are sold at the Taipei, Songshan, Keelung, Ruifang, and Yilan railway stations, as well as some of the stations on the Pingxi Branch Line. If you’re just stopping at a couple of the stations, note that an EasyCard (a popular Taiwan smart card) can also be used.
Shifen
Continuing inland, beyond Sandiaoling the branch line follows the river through a scenic wooded gorge. The train is soon plunged into darkness as it enters the first of four tunnels on the line. For much of the way to the next station, Dahua, the train is either underground or the tracks and the river are crammed side by side in a rocky ravine. Try to get a seat on the right-hand side to get the best views. After rain, tributary streams course down both sides of the gorge in a series of small waterfalls.
After passing tiny Dahua Station, the train emerges from the last tunnel on the branch line, rolls over a long bridge high above the river, and runs straight down the center of the main street of Shifen before coming to a halt at this village’s station. Shifen is one of the most popular stops on the line.
All kinds of Taiwanese snacks, from shaved ice and popsicles to grilled sausages and stinky tofu, can be sampled in the main street, which is also a great place to make, decorate, and set off a sky lantern. Write wishes or messages with brush and paint on the sides of a meter-tall paper lantern, fix a wad of “ghost money” inside, and after lighting the money allow the lantern to float up into the sky, where the wishes will hopefully be communicated to the gods!
Follow the crowd that gets off at the railway station to the northeastern end of Shifen Old Street, follow the main highway until you reach a fork, and take the road to the right to get to the Shifen Visitor Center and, further on, to the magnificent Shifen Waterfall. After heavy rainfall, this 30-meter-wide curtain of water is awesomely powerful, hence its nickname, “Taiwan’s Niagara Falls.” After enjoying the waterfall, cross the Waterfall Viewing Suspension Bridge right beside the railway line and return to Shifen on the main highway.

This is the final video of Kara and I exploring the beautiful Taiwan! For one of our last travel days we went to the beautiful cities of Jiufen and Shifen. We explored the Shifen waterfalls, created our own lantern, and explored the town of Juifen, where some believe the film Spirited Away was based off of!

Jiufen (九份) village in Taiwan
The bustling streets of the former Japanese-era gold mining town of Jiufen (九份) during our trip to Rueifang Township, New Taipei City (formerly Taipei County), Taiwan (ROC) on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.
Jiufen, also spelled Jioufen or Chiufen (九份), is a mountain area in the Ruifang District of New Taipei City near Keelung.
During the first years of the Qing Dynasty, the village housed nine families, thus the village would request nine portions every time shipments arrived from town. Later Jiufen (nine portions in Chinese) would become the name of the village.

Jiufen! Day trip from Taipei, Taiwan | Taipei Travel Vlog
One of the things I was most excited to see in Taiwan was Jiufen! A small mining town in the side of a mountain that resembles the tea house in Spirited Away.
We took a train and then a bus an hour and a half outside Taipei. Unfortunately it was extremely foggy and we didn't see the spectacular views the area is known for. Despite the weather, it was still crazy busy!
I loved the architecture in Jiufen and on the way back we found a beautiful temple near Songshan Station. I wish we hadn't been so jet lagged so we could have spent more time here.
I apologize in advance for my terrible Mandarin pronunciation!
What I've spent in Taiwan so far (in CAD):
Day 1 (and flight): $682.00
MRT Trips: $2
Train to Ruifang: $2
Bus to Jiufen: $0.65
Bus back to Taipei: $3
Food: $6
Coffee: $5
Hostel (Formosa 101): $33
Total so far: $733.65
