Howard Springs Nature Park is a park for the community. It is a place where visitors can walk relax explore and cool off close to Darwin. It will be maintained as a bushland oasis for families to ‘get outdoors’ enjoy picnics and barbeques and get close to local wildlife and aquatic wildlife such as barramundi and turtles.
Howard Springs Nature Park has historical significance as it has been used as a place for swimming and picnicking since WWII when the weir wall was constructed to supplement Darwin’s water supply. In 1952 the Park became the first reserve for recreation in the Northern Territory.
The Park also contains the Woorabinda Youth Camp area which was officially opened by the World Chief Guide Olave Lady Baden-Powell in 1967. Woorabinda has been a popular location for Scout and Girl Guide groups since this time.
The Park has historical importance to the local Indigenous and non-Indigenous community. The creek below the springs was dammed during World War II to supply water to a nearby abattoir and as a means of supplementing Darwin’s water supply. The waterhole was also used as a rest camp by both American and Australian service personnel.
Following the war the emergency water supply was no longer required but it was not until September 1950 that some facilities were erected and the area became a picnic ground.

Swimming in Berry Springs Naturepark, NT, Australia
About 50 km south of Darwin lies Berry Springs Naturepark in Northern Territory, Australia. There are three main pools along a length of the creek, beginning with a small waterfall and shallow pools running into larger, deeper pools and finishing with a small weir. Below the weir there is crocodile country and swimming is definitely not recommended.
The meditative video shows a swim from the Main Pool through a natural channel under hanging trees and a green and living canopy down to the Lower Pool.

Mataranka to Darwin. Ep.50
Time for catch ups! ????
[journey up to Darwin] ????⏫
After leaving Alice Springs we had a few more jobs lined up on our way north to Mataranka. While working???? in Mataranka we couldn’t resist not visiting our favourite natural spring - Bitter Springs again! We got up early on our last day in Mataranka for an early morning dip! ????????
Kurts family were all up in Darwin at this point, so we decided to leg it straight up to Darwin to spend some time with everyone.
We spent a good week in Darwin, camped at a bush camp⛺️, approximately 25minutes out of the CBD.
We visited Mindil Markets, watched the annual beer???? can regatta, had a great night at the speedway, visited the Darwin museum and a general look around the city. The free waterpark ‘Leanyer Recreational Park’ was a hit with our nieces and nephew and a great excuse for us to enjoy the water slides????????♀️????????♂️.
While in Darwin we also got a skin check and Rusty visited the vet for a checkup and her yearly needles????. Amz got her first stitch as she had a suspicious spot on her cheek, the doctor took out. Rusty also had a little operation to pull a few bad teeth out. Both girls are fine and have been given the all clear. ????
Amz spent a day at the Casuarina shopping centre for a bit of retail therapy???? while Kurt started Gibb River preparations on the Navara. We also picked up our new CFX 75L waeco dual zone fridge/freezer (which we LOVE!).
Satisfied with our week in Darwin, we headed back south, stopping into Berry Springs???? for an early morning dip! Another unexpected slice of paradise!
