It still amazes us how paradise on earth is just a 2-hr plane ride away from Sydney! Anyone who sets foot onto Lord Howe island will immediately be captivated by its ruggedness and untouched beauty. Turquoise blue waters, pristine beaches, lush roads lined with kentia palm and pine trees, and the volcanic mountain peaks of Gower and Lidgbird welcome you onto this World heritage-listed island.
There is a sense of exclusivity as approximately 360 people reside in the island, and only 400 visitors are allowed at a time. Although only 10kms long and 2kms wide, there is so much to do and explore on this island whether on land or at sea.
Exploring the island by bike is one the best ways to get around, or you can walk at your own idyllic pace as you take in the island's magnificent views.
Mt Gower and Lidgbird set amidst the turquoise waters of the lagoon is a sight to behold! The calm waters of Lagoon beach makes it perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
A short hike further leads to a beach hidden amongst weather-sculpted sandstone rocks, where you can spot turtles surfacing close to the shore. Old Settlement beach has magnificent mountain views and the most beautiful sunset one could ever behold, it is the perfect spot for a picnic or a relaxing afternoon at the shoreline with a book or drink at hand.
Our favorite beach is Ned's, located at the north-east side of the island. Golden sands lead to calm waters where a kaleidoscope of colourful fish and coral thrive, you can easily snorkel off the coast. Perhaps, one of the most amazing things you can experience in this island is hand-feeding the fish at Ned's beach. Prepare to be instantly surrounded by kingfish, wrasse, mullet, spangled emperor and silver-drummers in a feeding frenzy.
North Bay is also quite special. To get there, you need to complete a 3hr hike or access the beach via a boat. It is a place not to be missed, especially by bird-enthusiasts. It's a nesting ground for a variety of migratory birds such as petrels, shearwaters and masked boobies. From here, you can hike up to Mt Eliza or check out Old Gulch, a unique cove surrounded by basalt cliffs and rocks, a clear remnant of volcanic activity that has formed this diverse island. A secret to the locals is the Herring Rock pools, that you can safely access at low tide. Rock-hopping to this secluded part of the island is well worth-it as you get to dip yourself in a natural aquarium filled with colourful fish.
Several other beaches are found in this island, all with a unique charm of their own. To catch a good surf, Blinky Beach and Middle Beach are your best spots.
The prisitine waters surrounding the island is a sanctuary rich with diverse tropical, subtropical and temperate marine life, and is part of the world's most southerly coral reef system. Several of the best sites for snorkeling include Erscott's hole, Comet's hole, Horseshoe reef, Erscott's reef and Stephen's hole. Diving is best experienced around the Admiralty islands and Ball's Pyramid.
The best experiences are not only at sea, this island offers the best day hikes in Australia. You can go for a hike up to Malabar Hill to get a good vantage point of the entire island, or go for an intermediate hike up to Goat House Cave atop Mt Lidgbird. For the brave at heart, embark on an 8-hr trek, 875m high climb to Mt Gower, where you can get the most breath-taking views and encounter a few endemic flora only found in its mystical cloud forest.
The prestigious Lord Howe island has been dubbed World-heritage listed as it is home to a variety of rare and endangered plants, birds, and marine life. Amongst its endemic and protected species are the McCulloch's anemone fish, woodhen and the renowned Lord Howe stick insect which has lived since prehistoric times. Residents are passionate about conservation, sustainability, and are always mindful of the impact of their actions to preserve this island's exceptional natural beauty. It is truly one of Australia's gems, an epitome of The Last Paradise.
