Howelsen Hill - The Training Ground for Olympic Hopefuls
Watch as 3-time Olympic medalist Johnny Spillane helps train a new generation of ski jumpers and see why Howelsen Hill plays such an important role in ski history.
Opened in 1915, Howelsen Hill is the nation's oldest ski area, owned and operated by the City of Steamboat Springs. Howelsen Hill is home to the largest ski jumping complex in North America and has been the training ground for nearly 90 Olympians, 22 members of the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame and 13 members of the National Ski Hall of Fame. On any given day you can find former, current and future Olympians training at Howelsen Hill.
But don't let the ski area's historic roots intimidate you. Howelsen Hill is open to the public and even offers Ski Free Sundays, where anyone can ski or snowboard for absolutely free. In addition to affordable skiing and snowboarding for all levels, the ski area offers cross-country skiing and fat bike and snowshoe trails.

Steamboat Spring, Routt County, Colorado, United States, North America
The city of Steamboat Springs is a Home Rule Municipality that is the county seat and the most populous city of Routt County, Colorado, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 12,088. The city is an internationally known winter ski resort destination. The Steamboat Springs tourism industry is highlighted by Steamboat Ski Resort, which is on Mount Werner in the Park Range just east of the town. It also contains the much smaller Howelsen Ski Area. It is located in the upper valley of the Yampa River, along U.S. Highway 40 just west of the Continental Divide and Rabbit Ears Pass. The area surrounding Steamboat Springs was originally inhabited by the Yampatikas Utes, who hunted in the valley during the summer. Trappers began to move through the area during the first decades of the 19th century. James Harvey Crawford, the founder of Steamboat Springs, first arrived in the spring of 1874. The Crawford family moved there in 1876, and for the first five years were the sole permanent residents of the town. The native Utes were forcibly removed from the area to a reservation in Utah by the U.S. Army starting in 1879. Milestones in the development of the pioneer town included the first sawmill in 1873, incorporation of the town in 1900, and the arrival of the railroad in 1909. The economy of the region was originally based on ranching and mining, which still have a large presence in the county. Steamboat is home to natural hot springs that are located throughout the area (see Geography). Upon first hearing a chugging sound, early trappers believed that a steamboat was coming down the river. When the trappers saw that there was no steamboat, and that the sound was coming from a hot spring, they decided to name the spring Steamboat Springs. Originally, skiing was the only method of transportation during harsh and snowy Rocky Mountain winters. In turn, the popularity of skiing as a winter pastime catalyzed development of the town and other communities all over the Rocky Mountains. In 1913, Carl Howelsen, a Norwegian, moved to town and introduced ski jumping. Howelsen built the first jump on Howelsen Hill, now part of the Howelsen Ski Area. He also founded the annual Winter Carnival, a celebration still held each winter. The festival includes ski racing and jumping, dog sledding, and chariot events down Lincoln Avenue, the city's main street. Light shows on both Mount Werner and Howelsen Hill are highlights. The Steamboat Ski Resort was largely established by two local men, Jim Temple and John Fetcher. Temple led the effort to develop the area. Fetcher, a local rancher, was the main designer and builder. The resort opened on what was then called Storm Mountain in 1963. In 1974, The Industrial Company (TIC) was started in Steamboat Springs and has since grown into one of the largest industrial construction companies in the United States with revenues of approximately $2 billion in 2007. The company is one of the largest employers in Routt County and has more than 9,000 employees worldwide. In 1993, the City Council of Steamboat Springs, Colorado conducted a poll of its residents to choose a new name for the bridge that crossed the Yampa River on Shield Drive. With 7,717 votes, the winning name was James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge. The bridge was officially dedicated in September 1993, and James Brown appeared at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the event. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.1 square miles (26 km2), all of it land except for the Yampa River. The Yampa Valley and surrounding area contain several geothermal hot springs. The city is named after the Steamboat Spring, located near the present-day library and the old train depot. The spring itself was so named because its bubbling sounded like a steamboat to early settlers. Unfortunately, the construction of the railroad, which passes right next to the Steamboat Spring, silenced the chugging sound in 1908. Locals take pride in the name of their town, as evidenced by the humorously named Steamboat Yacht Club, a local restaurant formerly located on the Yampa River. Though there are no steamboats in the town, except for an allegorical steamboat playground in West Lincoln Park, the area does offer two hot springs that are open to the public.

Steamboat Springs is a city in northern Colorado’s Yampa Valley. It’s home to the Howelsen Hill ski area and the Steamboat ski resort. The latter has 6 peaks including Mount Werner. The city’s geothermal hot springs are said to have therapeutic properties. Near the city center, the long-standing Old Town Hot Springs is equipped with swimming and soaking pools, plus water slides.
Steamboat Springs is typically 3-4 hr away from Denver by car in good winter conditions. If heavy snow, there are a couple of passes (including Rabbit Ears Pass) which become much more difficult and slow going. The most direct route from Denver to Steamboat is I-70 west to Silverthorne. From there, take Highway 9 North to Kremmling where you meet up with US 40. Then drive west on US 40 over Rabbit Ears pass to Steamboat. With no traffic or snow, the drive can be as quick as 2.5 hr.
The Local Airport is only 22 miles from Steamboat (Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) in Hayden, CO). Many major airlines, including Continental, American and Delta, provide direct service from hubs and major cities during the winter, It is only a 30 min flight from Denver on United.
The City of Steamboat Springs provides free municipal bus service year round. Buses arrive approximately every 10 min in the winter and every 20 minutes in the summer. The Steamboat Springs Transit stops along every major route with service from downtown to the mountain condos and ski area.
Alpine Taxi is Steamboat's taxi Service. They provide in-town taxis as well as shuttle service to and from the Yampa Valley Regional Airport (Hayden) and the Denver International Airport. Storm Mountain Express also offers shuttle service to and from Hayden. Steamboat420 offers a free Dispensary Shuttle service. They have pick-up locations in Steamboat Springs, providing free roundtrip rides to a local cannabis dispensary.
The Town of Steamboat Springs is essentially separated into several areas. One is the mountain area (known simply as the mountain or the base area) surrounding the base of the Steamboat Ski Area on Mt. Werner, where there are multiple shops as well as dining and nightlife. The area also includes many hotels, condominiums and rental homes. The area is relatively easy to navigate on foot, but driving can be more difficult.
The other major area is downtown, around 4 miles from the Ski Area. Downtown Steamboat is located along Lincoln Avenue (US 40) and stretches 8-10 blocks between Third Street and Eleventh Street. This is the historic area of town. Shopping, dining and nightlife are here as well. Most of Steamboat's better restaurants are located downtown, and the area is much easier to navigate in a car than the mountain area. Parking on Lincoln Avenue is limited, but there are several parking lots on the numbered side streets.
West Steamboat is west of downtown and houses more locally-oriented businesses (like hardware stores, mechanics, and specialty shops).
Steamboat is long known for its legendary Champagne Powder snow, western heritage, and Olympic Tradition which gives Steamboat the name of Ski Town USA. Steamboat is also known for its reputation as a breeding ground for US Winter Olympic Athletes, who often participate in the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club that practices and trains athletes on Howelsen Hill. Howelsen Hill is Steamboat's second, smaller ski area, and is located near the downtown area. Howelsen Hill is the oldest continuous operating ski area in Colorado. Tickets here are much cheaper than at the Steamboat Ski Area, but terrain is also much smaller and includes one lift that operates on weekends, a pomma, a halfpipe, and several runs.

Olympian Todd Wilson Teaches Ski Jumping in Steamboat, CO
Steamboat Springs, Colorado is home to more Olympian snow sports medal winners in the United States than any other ski town, so it's no surprise that Olympian Todd Wilson calls Steamboat home while also serving as the Director of Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined Skiing for the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC).
Todd is responsible for training around 60 ski jumpers each season, as part of the 1,000+ kids who attend SSWSC gatherings and events. This inspiring community event had 40 people show up to support the kids, who were participating in the Larry Johnston Memorial Junior National Qualifier #1 at Howelson Hill Ski Area.
Todd is a really humble man who loves serving the kids, just as his mentors growing up helped to serve him in preparation for the Olympics. Check out his interview to hear what this selfless athlete has to say about helping his community in Colorado.

Here is our (combined) video from the Steamboat Springs Airport today June 3rd, 2019 when an US Air Force Osprey V-22 Landed to take on some fuel. It took 892 Gallons of JetA through single-point fueling (about 6 minutes of fuel transfer).
The pilot and Air Force crew were courteous and gracious, allowing us to get photos, and even see inside the cockpit. Many visitors came by the airport to see this rare sight, including pilots based at SBS.
Loud does not begin to explain it.
… Wait until the end of the video to see how they thanked us!
