Howick Hall Gardens
Howick Hall isn't open to the public but the beautiful gardens are worth a visit.
Howick was the family home of the Grey family from 1319 until the death of the 5th Earl Grey in 1963 when it was then passed to his eldest daughter, Lady Mary Howick, and then to his grandson, the present Lord Howick of Glendale. The gardens are primarily the work of Charles, 5th Earl Grey, his wife Mabel, and their daughter Lady Mary Howick between 1920 and 2001.
Earl Grey Tea was specially blended by a Chinese mandarin for Charles, 2nd Earl Grey, to suit the water from the well at Howick. Suitable for Children and Family viewing
Howick Hall and Gardens | Northumberland Gardens
The gardens at Howick are deliberately aimed at garden lovers with the extensive grounds offering a wide variety of plants throughout the year and are open from early February until mid November.
The season starts in early February with the ’Snowdrop Festival’. In late March/April there are spectacular drifts of daffodils to be seen throughout the grounds. In April/May the Woodland Garden is particularly lovely with rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, and the tulips also appear in the wild flower meadows in May. The formal gardens, including the herbaceous borders and terraces in front of the Hall, come into their own from June onwards. The Bog Garden lasts from June to September and is mostly planted with unusual herbaceous material grown from seed collected in the wild, which will be of particular interest to dedicated plantsmen. The late season brings brilliant autumn colour in late September through to mid November.
Howick Hall Gardens has been rated by the BBC Gardener’s World Magazine as one of the top 5 coastal gardens in the country and rated the Independent Magazine as ’one of the Best 10 Gardens to visit this spring’.

Howick Hall Tour.
Howick was the Grey family seat and home to Charles, 2nd Earl Grey, who was Prime Minister during the time of the passing of the Great Reform Bill of 1832, although he is probably better known for the famous tea which was blended especially for the water at Howick and named after him. His monument stands at the top of Grey Street in Newcastle.

Cragside is a country house set in the beautiful countryside of Northumberland, England near Rothbury. The house was build by Lord Armstrong. The property was eventually opened to the public in 1979.
Howick, Northumberland - January 2018
A short film put together from the 2 flights I managed in between the weather during our visit to Northumberland for New Year. The first part of the video is shot around where we stayed (in the row of cottages), and the second part is from our walk along the coast to Craster.
Even when the weather isn't great, it's a beautiful part of the world!
Hope you enjoy.
