Australia’s rooftop hiking ground –Walking Bogong High Plains Youtube
Mountains that in the distant past towered 4-5000m above sea level, eroded away to form the Bogong High Plains. 10 of the remaining peaks now range from 1836 – 1986m and some can be reached by relatively short climbs. The plains are true alpine zones, bare of trees with low stunted vegetation exposed to strong and cold winds to form dense mats and tussocks. There are many alpine wild flowers following snow melt that will enthrall you with their bright colours. In sheltered areas Snow Gums grow and may form extensive forests with an open understory. Many of the Snow Gums were killed by fire in 2003. Like in all alpine zones, campers and hikers need to be prepared to experience four seasons in any one day. The weather can change quickly from a sunny morning to hail and sleet in the afternoon. Take a week, come with your family, bring your camera and take home many wonderful memories. I am sure that this short video will encourage you to visit this area again and again.
Camping at Mount Howitt Victoria Hans Kosmer YouTube
This dream was born while camping for three months at the Catherine Springs on Mount Speculation (1648m) in February 1961. I was part of a crew assessing the Alpine Ash resources in the Terrible Hollow, part of the Wonnangatta Valley. The Alpine Walking Trail follows the mountain ridges of Mt Speculation, Mt Buggery, Crosscut Saw and Mt Howitt providing the most stunning views across the alpine mountains. Walk the trail in summer and you will also be rewarded by an abundance of alpine wild flowers. We are so fortunate to be able to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of endless unspoilt mountains and forest ecosystems. I walk here to be free to think and create. The power is within me and there appear to be no limits to what I can achieve.
