Hraunfossar & Barnafossar Falls, Iceland
The famous Hraunfossar & Barnafossar Waterfalls are on the Western Coast of Iceland not far from Reykjavik. Its located about 1:40 minutes outside of Reykjavik headed northwest.
Hraunfossar (Lava Falls) cascades out of a lava rock field into the river seemingly coming out of the ground.
The Legend has it that Barnafossar Falls once had 2 children of a widow fall into the falls and perish while she was at a Christmas church service. She followed the children's footsteps down to the falls and over the stone bridge. She collapsed the stone bridge to make it impassable so the falls would never claim another child. Hence the name Children's Falls. Thanks!

Hraunfossar Waterfalls
Hraunfossar (Borgarfjörður, western Iceland) is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull. The waterfalls pour into the Hvítá river from ledges of less porous rock in the lava. The name hraun comes from the Icelandic word for lava. The Hraunfossar are situated near Húsafell and Reykholt and lava-tube cave Víðgelmir is close by.
Literally a stone's throw upstream from Hraunfossar, there is another waterfall called Barnafoss. Its name, the waterfall of the children, comes from an accident which is said to have taken place here in former times. There was a natural bridge over the waterfall and two children from a nearby farm fell to their deaths crossing the river on the bridge. Afterwards, the grief-struck mother had the bridge destroyed.

Hraunfossar and Barnafoss
Hraunfossar - Lava Falls - Clear, cold
springs of subterranean water seep
through the lava and cascade down into
the magnificent milky-blue waters of the
Hvítá river.
Barnafoss (Children´s Falls) is
a short walk further up the river where a
bridge enables you to witness the power
of this mighty river.

Hraunfossar - The Lava Falls - Iceland (HD)
(Remember to turn on HD!)
The Lava Falls (Hraunfossar) in Western Iceland can't be shared in a single picture. They stretch for 900 meters along the Hvítá River, and the nearby Barnafoss just upriver feels like a continuation of the same cascade. The many falls are a result of water flowing through the porous lava that surrounds the area.
This video takes you from the top of Barnafoss to the bottom of Hraunfossar, so that you can feel the magic of the dramatic and enveloping landscape.

Hike with me in 80mph wind to find the waterfalls in Húsafell, Iceland. I get very lost from the path many times, but I find the waterfall in the end! If you go to West Iceland, make sure to check out one of the many waterfalls such as Hraunfossar in Husafell.
