Donggang, a medium-sized town about an hour south of Kaoshiung, was the next stop of our journey. Upon arrival, we found that the usual malls, night markets, and hustle-bustle of Taiwanese towns was NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!

Upon setting foot, the city itself may have given the impression of unremarkable, but we later found that not only was it THE PLACE to get your freshest seafood catch.

Dong Gang Seafood Market in Kaohsiung Taiwan

The Dong Gang Seafood Market is known as the Hua Qiao Shi Chang. It is an enclosed market full of stalls selling fresh fish, dried seafood, vegetables, sashimi that rivals Japan , as well as many deep fried seafood snacks.

Dried shrimp and cuttlefish are a speciality in southern Taiwan. Visitors can buy them in bulk or in pre-packaged bags. The market sells everything from dried tiny shrimps for cooking and dried sardines, to dried squid and cuttlefish.

There are also many kinds of fresh fish to choose from. The fish are laid out in front of vendor stalls usually in its full body form. The vendor will weigh and gut and descale the fish for you if you like. Don't be alarmed by the giant swordfish heads. Taiwanese know there is good meat in the head and they will also use the head to make fish stock for soups.
Visitors can choose the type of sashimi they would like. There are different sized portions. A small portion, pictured below, was only about 100NT or $3.00 usd. Delicious and inexpensive!! Vendors usually have large chunks of fresh fish in their cases. They will cut off and weigh any amount for you. If you would like to cut it into pieces to take out, they will oblige. The sashimi is incredibly fresh as it was probably unloaded off the boat that morning and put up for sale in the stalls.

????First Stop #光復路海鮮街：新鮮的食材、特製的海鮮料理，除了「東港三寶」黑鮪魚、櫻花蝦、油魚子之外，「那個魚」也是東港的特產，入口即化的口感，拿來煮麵線正是當地最經典的吃法。
????Second Stop #東隆宮：東隆宮是東港重要的民間信仰，以每三年舉辦一次的迎王平安祭典（王船祭）而聞名。祈福過後，東隆宮旁剛好有一間古早味冰菓店，老地方吃出簡單風味。
????Third Stop #東港老街：東港（延平）老街有不少日據時期保留下來的建築物，像是東港郡役所，從洋式的紅磚建築便可想像當年的繁華。街道旁還有仿巴洛克風格的建築群，從招牌可見當年風光。
????Forth Stop #華僑市場：豐富的海鮮食材讓人看得眼花撩亂，原來這就是所謂海鮮大平台！市場內也有許多現點現做的攤位，現切生魚片、炙燒壽司，滋味令人難忘。

????First Stop: Seafood Street by Guangfu Rd.: fresh ingredients, specially prepared seafood. Besides the “three treasures of Donggang”: bluefin tuna, sergestid shrimp and oil caviar, harpadon microchir is also a specialty in Donggang that melts in your mouth. The classic way to eat it is to serve it with misua.
????Second Stop: #DonglongTemple: it’s the most important temple for believers of local deities in Donggang, known for the ceremony of welcoming Wangye Deities (Wangye Boat Festival; Chinese: 王船祭) that takes place once every three years. After having prayed for good fortune, you can go to a nearby traditional ice shop and enjoy its simple favor of this old place.
????Third Stop: #DonggangOldStreet, the Yanping Old Street in Donggang has many buildings from the Japanese colonial era, such as the Donggang city hall. Looking at its Western-style red bricks, we can imagine how flourishing it was back in the days. Around the corner of the old street there are building imitating the baroque style, their signboards reflect the splendor of old times.
????Fourth Stop: #HuaQiaoMarket: abundant in seafood ingredients, the market gets people dazzled! It’s actually a huge platform to sell seafood! There are also stalls preparing ready-made food, cutting sashimi, rolling sushi, the flavor will be unforgettable!
