Huahine Nautique
The tour begins with a visit to a pearl farm where your guide will explain how these beautiful pearls are formed. The boat will then sail
off to a coral garden in Huahine’s magnificent turquoise lagoon followed by a buffet lunch on a motu. The last visit of the day is to the
natural aquarium where your guide will feed the reef fish and sharks so that you get a better look at them in the water or from a specially
made platform.

Join us as we explore the crystal blue waters of Huahine on a outrigger ride to a picnic on a motu with a stop for a swim and black pearl farm.
Huahine is an island located among the Society Islands, in French Polynesia, an overseas territory of France in the Pacific Ocean. It is part of the Leeward Islands group (Îles sous le Vent). The island has a population of about 6,300.
Huahine measures 10 mi in length, with a maximum width of 8 mi and is made up of two main islands surrounded by a fringing coral reef with several islets, or motu. Huahine Nui (Big Huahine) lies to the north and Huahine Iti (Little Huahine) to the south. The two islands are separated by a few hundred yards of water and joined by a sandspit at low tide. A small bridge was built to connect Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti.

French Ploynesia, Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea, and Taha'a
French Polynesia covers over two million square miles of the South Pacific Ocean and is comprised of 118 islands spread over five great archipelagos. Many islands are crowned with jagged peaks while others just barely float above the breaking waves. Total land mass of all the islands equals an area slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island, but is spread over a region of the Pacific as large as Western Europe.
The three archipelagos most sought by visitors are the Society Islands, comprised of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a; The Tuamotu Atolls or Tahiti's Strand of Pearls, include the atolls of Rangiroa, Manihi, Tikehau, and Fakarava; and the Marquesas. The two other archipelagos, the Austral Islands and the Gambier Islands, lie to the south and the southeast, respectively, of the Society Islands. While very few travelers venture to these remote islands, those that do are not disappointed by the pristine environment.
Legendary Tahiti has long been the vision of la Nouvelle Cythere, the earthly paradise. Explorers Wallis, Bougainville, and Cook all told of a land of spellbinding beauty and enchantment, where the climate was delightful, hazardous insects unknown, and the natives welcoming. Rousseau's noble savage had been found! A few years later, Fletcher Christian and Captain Bligh's drama of sin and retribution culminated among Tahiti and her islands.
The list of famous authors who traveled here and wrote of the region reads like a literature course: Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson, Pierre Loti, Rupert Brooke, Jack London, W. Somerset Maugham, Charles Nordhoff, and James Norman Hall, among others. Stories of life on the islands filled the pages. In Tahiti it seems life is meant to be enjoyed.

Tahiti VR Behind the Scenes
It’s hard to imagine a destination that could look better in VR than the islands of Tahiti, from its coral gardens and overwater bungalows to its epic purple sunsets. Naturally, when my company—superswell VR—was given a prototype of the world’s first true 3D omniview camera, we took it straight to the islands of Tahiti.
Our mission was to capture jaw-dropping VR footage of Tahiti while putting the prototype VR camera to the test. We’d be monitoring the camera’s performance in extreme heat, high humidity, salt water conditions and aggressive wind. Little did we know, we’d also be observing how it fared in incredibly unpredictable conditions—surrounded by a dozen sharks.
Things got off to a rough start, however, when our engineer discovered that our underwater camera housing got scratched in transit. We started putting a plan in motion to get a new underwater housing sent to us within 48 hours, but our chances of meeting that deadline were not looking good. We didn’t let that stop us though.
The bulk of our shoot was to take place on Bora Bora, where we’d capture its famous overwater bungalows, marine life and heiva dancers in VR. We rearranged our schedule to move back the underwater shoot and instead got some beauty shots of our surroundings.
Shooting in 360 degrees is nothing like shooting with an average camera. Everything and everyone will be in the frame, except for the dead area underneath the camera. We used a tripod extension to give the camera more height, but part of the tripod will always be in the shot. That area is usually covered with a logo in post.
As our Bora Bora shoot progressed, we were under the wire, waiting for our equipment to arrive. In order for it to work, our engineering team in San Jose, Calif., had to deliver the underwater housing to my husband in LA in a matter of hours. He then rushed to LAX to deliver it to the appropriate representative at the Air Tahiti Nui counter. Meanwhile, the managing director of Tahiti Tourisme North America had to find a friend he could trust, who just happened to be flying to Papeete the next day. That person would have to hand-carry the housing onboard the flight. Through the power of Facebook, we connected with Dick Bailey—the president of Paul Gauguin Cruises—who became our “mule” for the long-haul flight. A few car rides, a boat ride and an inter-island flight later, the underwater housing made it to us in perfect condition. It was an incredible feat, and we’re eternally thankful to everyone who helped us along the way.
In the back of our minds though, we knew that our underwater solution might not work correctly outside of the lab environment. Get this: Everything about the underwater camera solution was custom-made for the shoot. The housing we stressed over was really just a perfectly-shaped lightbulb cover. The battery was created separately, so that it wouldn’t overheat in the underwater housing. It was housed in a gun case, of all things, and connected to the camera with PVC pipe.
We watched in awe as our engineer got into the water with the underwater camera among sting rays and sharks—definitely not something he was able to test in the lab beforehand. With the help of our oddball guide, Ramon, we were successful in getting a few solid shots of tropical fish, rays and sharks before our equipment shorted out on us.
Next, we were off to Huahine to capture its archeological sites and natural beauty. This meant, we’d be hiking deep into the backcountry with our gear during what felt like the hottest day of the year.
Would the camera stand up to the relentless temperatures? Yep. It sure did. The camera actually did far better than we and the footage we captured was awesome. Despite the challenges of shooting in a remote location with extreme weather, the 360 3-D footage we captured in the islands of Tahiti is going to blow your mind.

3 Weeks in French Polynesia (Moorea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, Ra'iatea, Taha'a)
The complete video of our trip to French Polynesia in 2016, with all 4 individual parts of the trip edited together.
Part 1: After flying Tahiti, the island of Moorea was our first destination during our trip to French Polynesia in 2016. We stayed at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and had a great time exploring the island with Albert Transport's 4WD Safari Tour.
Part 2: Our visit to Bora Bora! Bora Bora was the second stop during our 3-week trip to French Polynesia in 2016. We stayed in an overwater bungalow at Le Meridien Bora Bora and went on a few excursions, including: skydiving, swimming with whales and sharks, and snorkeling with stingrays.
Part 3: Our third stop was Rangiroa, where we stayed at Hotel Kia Ora Resort & Spa and Le Sauvage Private Island. Several miles away from the nearest road, no electricity, surrounded by bright, blue water. Definitely the most relaxing place and remote location we've ever been!
Part 4: Sailing on a catamaran between Bora Bora, Raiatea, and Taha'a during our final week. We sailed around the bright, blue waters of Bora Bora, saw a whale and dolphin, swam with stingrays, snorkeled the Coral Garden in Taha'a, toured a vanilla farm, visited a pearl farm, watched a traditional Polynesia dance show at Le Ficus, and enjoyed living on a boat for a week!
