Dozens of earthquakes alarm Hualien
Hualien residents are a bit on edge after more than 35 earthquakes rattled the area in the last 25 hours. The Central Weather Bureau says it's just a normal release of energy, but the quakes are adding to landslide fears following this week's torrential rains. Earthquakes have been common over the past few days. In Hualien alone, starting from just before midnight last night, dozens struck. The strongest, at 12:15 a.m., measured magnitude 5.4. The greatest intensity, which measures strength of shaking, was a VI in Jici Village. The earthquakes were all relatively shallow, frightening even people in Fengbin Township, which is accustomed to quakes. At times people ran outdoors and many had a sleepless night.The Seismological Center says normal plate tectonics were behind the quakes and that the frequency was within a typical range.Kuo Kai-wenSeismological Center DirectorThis is where the Philippine Sea Plate directly squeezes and strikes the Eurasian Plate. That's why there are so many earthquakes.Expert sensibility won't ease people's concerns. Besides the Hualien earthquakes, on two days this week Hsinchu experienced magnitude 4 quakes. No disasters were directly attributed to the shaking, but combined with recent storms they made the ground less stable.

Tropical Storm Bailu to unleash rains from Friday
Tropical Storm Bailu is still tracking northwest toward Taiwan. Local and international forecasts see the storm making a direct hit before cutting across Taiwan proper. The Central Weather Bureau says it could issue a sea warning as early as Friday morning, followed by a land warning in the latter half of the day. The worst effects will be felt Saturday, with torrential rains expected in eastern, central, and southern parts of the island.Early morning on Thursday, it was cloudy or sunny skies island-wide. But the fair weather won’t stick around. Tropical Storm Bailu is churning in, and a sea warning is expected as early as Friday morning.Chu Mei-linCentral Weather Bureau forecasterAs Bailu approaches, it will intensify slightly, but the strength is likely to remain at the scale of a tropical storm. With regard to a land warning for the storm, we’re not ruling that out. If there is one, it would be issued after 12 p.m. on Friday.At this time, meteorologists from the CWB, U.S. navy, South Korea, and Japan all see Taiwan in the path of a direct hit. The storm is most likely to make landfall at Hualien or Taitung. But the path could change based on the strength of a Pacific high-pressure zone. There’s a chance of the storm veering southward to glance the Hengchun Peninsula or transit the Bashi Channel.Chu Mei-linCentral Weather Bureau forecasterThe future path of the storm is still uncertain. Going by our current track forecast and the radius of probability circle, this storm will cover the whole of Taiwan and an area of the Bashi Channel. So generally speaking, on the two days of Saturday and Sunday, there will be significant rainfall in the east and south.Starting Friday, Bailu will bring intermittent showers to Eastern Taiwan. Rainfall is expected across Taiwan on Saturday, with torrential rains to strike the eastern, central, and southern parts of the island.
