TRUJILLO DAY TRIP | Huanchaco, Huacas de Moche & Chan Chan, Peru | Northern Peru Travel
We finally left Cusco for Trujillo, the third-largest city in Peru, located in Northern Peru.
In this vlog, we take you on a day trip from Trujillo to three different sites:
1. Huacas de Moche (Temples of Moche)
2. Chan Chan Peru
3. Huanchaco
Here's the link to the full-day tour we took:
Our first stop was the Moche Temples, which consists of the Moche Museum (Museo Huacas de Moche), Temple of the Sun (Huaca del Sol) and Temple of the Moon (Huaca de la Luna). It was the city of the Moche civilization, which was developed around year 600 - a few hundred years prior to the Inca civilization.
Our second stop was the Chan Chan Ruins, which are one of the most endangered UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ruins of Chan Chan also includes the Rainbow Temple (Huaca del Dragón), as well as the main Chan Chan Archaeological Zone. Chan Chan is a pre-Columbian city in the Americas. This Chimu Kingdom was the largest adobe city in the world with around 10,000 buildings. It was the capital of the Chimú civilization.
We ended our day in Huanchaco, a coastal town that used to be a sleepy fishing village. The waves here make the Huanchaco surf popular with the locals.
We're so glad we did this tour. It was a definite Northern Peru Travel bucket list item, as this is one of the least visited regions of Peru. Northern Peru receives less than 10% of International visitors to Peru.
We stayed at DUE Hotel, and here's the link to booking dot com DUE Hotel page

My Home in Huanchaco, Peru
Steve LePoidevin and his wife, Nancy, have lived in the Peruvian beach town of Huanchaco for the last few years. After almost a decade in Asia, they came back to this side of the world in 2016 and spent a year in the southern colonial city of Arequipa before moving to the north coast of Peru.
In this brief video, Steve takes you on a quick tour of their small studio apartment as well as that of his downstairs neighbor. After living in larger spaces for several years, they recently moved into a small rooftop unit to try out life in a “tiny home”.

Travel to Peru - Huanchaco - Beach & Surf City
Huanchaco is a very chill town. I have spent a really nice moment in Huanchaco - it is a popular vacation beach town in the city of Trujillo, Peru. Huanchaco is known for its surf breaks, its caballitos de totora and ceviche.
I recommend you to visit a great Moksha hostel - which is just in front of the surf beach. Owners are very nice, preparing for you great local food, (also raw), smoothies, and you will have also chance to practice yoga there.

Budget traveling through Huanchaco, Peru
Blog post - video and photos -
Since we've seen the Peruvian capital, the jungle and the sierras it's time for a glimpse of the pacific coast in our limited trip through this part of former Inca Empire. 'Cause our road is taking us north towards Ecuador we decide to stop at Huanchaco, a small beach town 8 hour bus ride from Huaraz. Even though the area is more famous for Chan Chan ruins and the city of Trujillo nearby, it gets it's fair share of tourists, specially surfers.
We arrive in the middle of the night in Trujillo so we can't catch a local bus to Huanchaco unless we are willing to wait another 4 hours, and we take a taxi instead. After 20 min of negotiation we manage to find a driver that will take us there for 10 $ (proud to say our negotiating skills have been fine tuned in Asia). As the taxi driver takes us through Huanchaco to find a place to stay in wee hours of the night it's clear there's not gonna be much late night activities here. The main street (well, pretty much the only street) is totally deserted. After knocking on several doors without answer we finally find someone who's willing to get out of bed and give us a room.
A couple of hours of sleep at one of those windowless -- prison-cell-has-more-charm -- rooms and we're out to check the place and enjoy some beach time. As usual the first thing we do is to check out the local mercado to get some breakfast and even though it's not remotely as abundant as the one in Huaraz we find some delicious fruit shakes and coffee to get us started.
The beach is nothing to write home about (ok, we got kinda spoiled in SE Asia with it's blue sea, white sand islands), but it's mellow enough and after three months of jungle and mountains it feels very welcoming. Actually, soon enough you realize there's more to this place than meets the eye. First of all, we met some really friendly pelicans that didn't mind getting close enough for a few brief cuddles and some photos. I guess you can already sense that you're getting closer to the Galapagos islands. Secondly, the beach seems to be quite lively and full of various artists, musicians, jugglers and simply people who offer their creative expression in one way or another.
We get some colorful hair and beard extensions, hand woven bracelets, photos with a local iguana and share some interesting conversations with local artists. To top it off we get to share a beer while enjoying a beautiful and long awaited sunset on a beach, with sounds of didgeridoo in the background. I have to say the place has far more charm than expected.

Magical Peru #6: Huanchaco
After visiting Chan Chan (Huaca del Dragon) and the pyramids of Huaca de la Luna and Huaca del Sol, of the Moche ancient culture and the Chimu empire, we headed to the town of Huanchaco, a popular beach resort for Trujillo residents.
Huanchaco is a town and a beach from origin mochica that is visited commonly as a summer vacation spot, It is located in the northern of Trujillo city, in Peru. Huanchaco is the most visited beach of Trujillo city and It is famous for several things but particularly for being a surfer's dream spot and its caballitos de totora. The most famous food here is the ceviche. Huanchaco is nearby the very famous ruins of Chan Chan. Throughout 2008 the town underwent significant improvements with all streets being paved with decorative bricks and the main street landscaped with plants. In 2012 Huanchaco has been approved as a World Surfing Reserve by the organization Save The Waves Coalition. This historic town is part of the tourist circuit called the Moche Route or Ruta Moche. Located 12 km northwest Trujillo, sits in a bay, on a terrace at the foot of Campana mountain. Today is a beautiful beach that despite its modernity, still retains its old charm.
We started out trip around Peru from the capital, Lima, the main entry point for foreigners arriving in Peru. From Lima, we went to Trujillo, Huanchaco, Chiclayo, Arequipa, Chivay, Canyon de Colca, Puno, Lago Titicaca, Cusco, Valle Sagrado, Aguas Caliente and, of course, Machu Pichu. On the way, we visited many archaeological sites and learnt about the ancient civilizations that made pre-Columbian Peru.
After departing Lima, we headed to the North Coast. In Trujillo we stayed at the Hotel Colonial, which you can see on the previous video. From Trujillo we visited the cities of Huanchaco and Chiclayo, and the archaeological sites of Huaca de la Luna, Huaca del Sol, Chan Chan and the tomb of the Lord of Sipán, including their museums.
