???????? Huascarán National Park (Huaraz, Peru)
Coming from the Northern hemisphere makes me instinctively look for snow in December. This time I found my winter fairytale in Huascarán National Park with its hundreds of glaciers, lakes and lagoons at 3-6k meter altitude. Gorgeously turquoise waters, green valleys with snow-capped mountains on the background - unbelievable beauty and diversity of landscapes.
With hiking trails from just a couple of hours up to 10 days, even one month would not be enough to explore this place properly but here’s what one can do in 4 days:
Day 1️⃣. Take it easy and get acclimatised to the 3k+ altitudes. No joke, I’ve seen people vomit and faint on their first day in the mountains. Of course it doesn’t mean staying at home and doing nothing the whole day.
Get one of the widely offered bus tours to see the picturesque Llanganuco lagoon.
Along the way you'll visit the Yungay village, now declared a national cemetery, as it was fully destroyed in 1970 by an earthquake followed by an avalanche, killing about 20.000 people.
Try the local delicacy “cuy”, a fried/roasted guinea pig (the locals find it funny that we keep these guys as pets, for them it’s nothing else but food). Drink mate de coca to prevent altitude sickness.
Day 2️⃣. Test if you're altitude-ready by taking a bus tour to Pastoruri Glacier situated at a bit over 5.000m (broke my personal record there!). There’s a short one hour hike at the top, which lets you fully experience the fun of walking at high altitudes - all the movements are slower, the body doesn’t listen and respond to you properly, while the amazing scenery makes you want to run around, jump, take one million pictures and build a snowman! Sad fact, this glacier is disappearing due to the climate changes and will be completely gone in about 20 years.
Day 3️⃣. Hike Laguna 69, the highlight of the trip and deserves a separate post - stay tuned!
Day 4️⃣. Hike Laguna Wilcacocha, with its breathtaking views over the whole Cordillera Blanca. Passing through the tiny local village on the way up you’re most likely to hear Quechua rather than Spanish. And wrap it all up with a hot-tub-relax at the termal waters in Monterrey!

Huascarán National Park / Tourist destination Peru - History and Origin
Situated in the Cordillera Blanca, the world's highest tropical mountain range, Mount Huascarán rises to 6768 m above sea-level. The deep ravines watered by numerous torrents, the glacial lakes and the variety of the vegetation make it a site of spectacular beauty. It is the home of such species as the spectacled bear and the Andean condor.
Situated in the aptly named Cordillera Blanca (White Mountains), Huascaran National Park protects the heart of the World's highest tropical mountain range in the central Peruvian Andes. The property of 340000 hectares covers a diverse mountain landscape from around 2500 m.a.s.l. and culminating in 27 snow-capped peaks above 6000 m.a.s.l. It includes the spectacular Nevado Huascaran (Mount Huascaran), Peru's highest peak at 6768 m.a.s.l., as the property named after the 16th Century Inca leader Huascar. The snow-covered peaks, the numerous tropical glaciers and glacial lakes, the high plateaus intersected by deep ravines with torrential creeks and the variety of vegetation types form a spectacular landscape of rare beauty.
Appreciating the geomorphology and striking landscape beauty it is easy to overlook that the property also boasts noteworthy ecosystem and biodiversity values. The wide range of ecosystems and vegetation types includes small pockets of montane tropical forests in some of the lower elevations and valleys. Diverse types of Paramo and Puna grasslands and scrublands are the dominant vegetation types in the property, at higher elevations transitioning into tropical tundra. Huascaran National Park is home to the emblematic Vicuna, which was close to extinction in the 1960s but has since recovered, one of the most spectacular conservation successes in South America. Other charismatic mammals include the North Andean Deer, Puma or Mountain Lion, the vulnerable Spectacled Bear and the endangered Andean Mountain Cat. The avifauna boasts more than 100 recorded species, among them the Andean Condor and the Giant Hummingbird. Around 800 plant species have been documented, the most famous being the endangered Queen of the Andes, known for its giant flower-spike. The entire region has been settled for millennia, as evidenced by the many pre-Columbian manifestations in and around the property. Early inhabitants left remnants of agricultural terraces and corrals, as well as roads, dams and water canals. Moreover, there are noteworthy cave paintings, stone tombs and countless artefacts.

Bike Problems in Huascarán National Park - Peru
Coincidentally, both of our bikes decided to have problems within the course of an hour at 4,500 meters on the completely deserted mountain road. After stopping for a photo, my bike suddenly wouldn't start and required a bump/push start to get it going. Soon after, Brian's chain came off of his bike after hitting a large pothole, making his bike completely immobile.
Fortunately, we were stranded on a road surrounded by gorgeous scenery, and after stacking some large rocks under the skid plate and having me hold the front of the bike down so the rear wheel was off the ground, we were able to adjust the back wheel to create enough slack to get the chain back on the rear sprocket. We were then able to ride the rest of the way down the mountain and out of the park.

HIKE TO LAGUNA 69 PERU | Lake 69 in Huascaran National Park | Huaraz, Peru
After taking an overnight bus ride from Trujillo to Huaraz, Peru, we joined an organized tour to do a hike to Laguna 69, or Lake 69 Peru.
Laguna 69 Peru is located inside the Huascaran National Park, and this national park is one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Peru. Huascaran National Park Peru is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site.
The hike to Laguna 69 is quite strenuous, due to the high altitude of about 15,000 feet (4500m). We gained around 600-700 meters of elevation during our three-hour Laguna 69 trek.
Is Laguna 69 worth doing? We think so. Just maybe not twice. :-)

AMAZING MOUNTAIN LAGOON // Backpacking in Peru [subs EN/ES/SK]
Sleeping in the woods, random buildings, an adobe cottage without water. Climbing hills, arguing with transportation workers, eating in places you wouldn't expect a westerner to set foot in. Sandboarding the dunes, chilling out in an oasis, voyage down the Amazon river, piranhas fishing... oh yeah, and Machu Picchu of course:)
