Huayna Picchu - Walkthrough & Hike footage
I wanted to share the experience of hiking from Machu Picchu, Peru to Huayna Picchu (also spelled Wayna Picchu), the mountain peak that sits prominently next to the archeological ruins that are visited more often. I also made a similar, longer walkthrough video of Machu Picchu itself:
This footage has been licensed by a few commercial entities, and is available for licensing on a non-exclusive basis. For more details, please contact me here:
I kept the original audio so you can appreciate the soundscape: the birds, the insects, the heavy breathing and the sound of footsteps. I made this so that my friends and family who haven't had the opportunity to visit this breathtaking place can get as close to the experience as I can possibly bring them.
You can see the photos from the visit here:
This was filmed on a Canon 7D and a Canon T2i. Flying/moving shots were stabilized using a Glidecam HD-2000, a camera stabilizer rig that uses a counterbalance to stay steady (though the fierce winds often made it very difficult). I wasn't allowed to bring in more heavy-duty/professional grade equipment into the park with me, so I used a small Gorillapod instead of a tripod, etc....
The time-lapse shots were compiled from a few hundred individual raw images that I processed in Adobe Lightroom and compiled in Adobe After Effects.
Should you hike Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu?
Hi Guys,
In this video we explore Machu PIcchu, Wayna Picchu and the Gran Caverna with it's moon temple.
We left Cusco the day before we planned on hiking Machu PIcchu. We took a 2 hour private taxi from Cusco to the train station. We then boarded the Inca Rail and spent another couple hours on the train before arriving in the Aguas Calientes. We spent the night in Aguas Calientes and planned on waking up at 4AM to get ready to take the first bus up the mountain.
We we're on the second bus and we're one of the first people to enter Machu PIcchu. We payed extra for premium tickets that would give us access to Wayna Picchu. These tickets are very popular and should be booked 4-6 month's in advance as there are only 400 of them available per day.
We entered Wayna Picchu at 7:30AM, this is when the trail opens up and if you are one of the first people to start the hi it's ideal as it's very difficult and you don't want to get stuck behind someone slow.
After a 2 hour hike up, we decided to extend our hike and visit the Gran Caverna and the moon temple. This extension is 2-3 hours depending on your speed and the weather. It's likely you can expect rain on this trail as you circle the wetside of the mountain. The views are spectacular and there is plenty of wildlife including parrots. We highly recommend taking this route back if you have the energy.
When we got back to the main fortress of machu Picchu there we're people everywhere. We did a quick tour through the ruins, took some photos and headed down the mountain by bus.

This is one of the best travel adventures I've ever experienced!
Huayna Picchu, also spelled Wayna Picchu, is that tall mountain standing in the back of nearly every Machu Picchu picture. The mountain stands over Machu Picchu and is deeply connected to the site. Translating to mean Young Peak in Quechua, Huayna Picchu was said to be the home of one of Machu Picchu’s most important priests. The top is covered in ruins and offers one of the best views of Machu Picchu.

Exploring MACHU PICCHU & HUAYNA PICCHU Mountain | PERU
Since its discovery by Hiram Bingham in the summer of 1911 Machu Picchu has peaked the interest of countless people around the world. In the 1500's the Incan Empire was conqured by the Spanish and it was abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle, only to be rediscovered centuries later. Now it is one of the world's most treasured cultural heritage sites visited by around 7,000 people every day. Of those 7,000 only 400 may enter and climb Huayna Picchu Mountain, which lies prominently behind the main site. Much is still unknown about its significance since the Inca had no written language in which to describe it, but it's impressive either way.

Huayna Picchu, Peru #20
How Hard Is Hiking Huayna Picchu? | Machu Picchu, Peru
We headed back up to the ruins of Machu Picchu this morning. The weather had taken a turn and we could barely see the city from the view points. Luckily, we had booked to hike up Huayna Picchu, the mountain behind. It was a long, hard and wet journey to the top. We heard the views from the top were worth the hike, so were pretty excited! But alas, at the top there was just fog. Luckily we had seen the ruins the day earlier and the hike was definitely fun!

Huayna Picchu: A Bird's-Eye View on Machu Picchu
Peru & Bolivia Episode 13: After exploring Machu Picchu the day before, we're climbing Huayna (also spelled Wayna) Picchu, the iconic mountain in the back of literally every picture of Machu Picchu, ever. A highlight - next to the stunning views - are the many steep and perilous stairs, also called the stairs of death!

Machu Picchu Tourist Attractions Machu Picchu, a city built during the 1460 and 1470 AD, is situated high in the Andes Mountains in Peru. Everything inside this city from the complex and refined gardens to the multifaceted bridges and channels was intended to give travelers and locals an idea about the blessed relationship of nature and mankind. Best time to Visit Macchu Pichu If you are planning to travel to Macchu Picchu, the best time to visit is during the off peak months from April to May or September to October. Fewer travelers go to see Macchu Picchu during these months providing you with ease in traveling without the stress of queuing with hoards of travelers going to and from. You can have the chance to enjoy every glimpse within the city during Sundays when less people go there. In case the crowds increase during noontime and you want to avoid this assembly, you can settle to visit a nearby attraction like the Huayna Picchu or the Inca Bridge then go back to Macchu Picchu when the crowd is easier to handle. Macchu Picchu Attractions Temple of the Sun- Visiting the city opens up the chance to see many historic and magnificent attractions that are ruins of the ancient past of Macchu Picchu. The first attraction site that you will see when you enter the ruins is the Temple of the Sun. However, entering the temple is not allowed and yet this condition does carry much impact because the sight of the exterior architecture that you can witness is enough to create a lasting impression about this rich ruins of the past.
