Live Where You Love: Blacksburg, Virginia
Widely considered to be the hub of the New River Valley, Blacksburg is approximately 20 square miles and is packed with a combination of beauty, charm, and culture. Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) serves as the area's largest employer, and continues to be the cultural centerpiece of Blacksburg. With over 30,000 full-time students, the population of Blacksburg almost doubles during the school year. But along with the students, Virginia Tech brings top notch athletics and one of the nation's leading research institutions to Blacksburg. However the charm of Blacksburg doesn't lie solely with the university. The Town is filled with countless cultural, artistic and creative opportunities. In recent years, the arts and culture scene has flourished with venues like the Lyric Theatre, the Armory Art Gallery, and the $89 million dollar Center for the Arts (scheduled to open in 2013). Outdoor lovers are also at home in Blacksburg. Whether hiking on the Huckleberry Trail, the exploring the nearby Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, or fishing in the New River, there are endless outdoor activities throughout the year. Blacksburg residents enjoy the convenience of shopping and dining in the revitalized Downtown. Downtown Blacksburg offers a fantastic destination for townspeople, students, and visitors alike. While development continues in Blacksburg, the Town continues to keep it's small-town charm. Blacksburg real estate options offers a large variety of housing options. There are many neighborhoods and subdivisions - some with community amenities and some even within walking distance to Downtown and Virginia Tech. If you are looking for a little more privacy, then there are options a little bit outside of Blacksburg Town limits that will allow you to have some land, but still be near Downtown Blacksburg.
Live Where You Love: The New River Valley
Welcome to the New River Valley! Nestled in beautiful southwest Virginia, The New River Valley comprises the counties of Montgomery (including the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg) Pulaski, Floyd, Giles and the City of Radford. With a population just under 200,000, the NRV has seen substantial growth over the last few decades and continues to be one of the fastest growing areas in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Town of Blacksburg serves as the New River Valley's hub. Consistently ranked among the country's best places to live, Blacksburg is also the home to Virginia Tech - Virginia's largest university and one of the nation's leading research institutions. From it's die-hard athletic fan base to it's growing Corporate Research Park, Virginia Tech's influence on the region is undeniable.
Residents of the New River Valley enjoy a range of cultural, sporting, and outdoor activities. On Saturdays in the Fall, over 60,000 college football fans descend on Lane Stadium to cheer on their beloved Hokies. If you are passionate for the outdoors, you can hike the Huckleberry Trail or enjoy miles of walking and biking trails in the surrounding Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. The New River, believed to be the second oldest river in the world, is ideal for boating, fishing, and swimming.
The New River Valley's growing technical community has helped to spur the region's economy. Ranked as having one of the Best Educated Technical Workforces, the New River Valley has seen an increase with both the research economy and entrepreneurial startups.
But even with it's growing tech community, the region still maintains a small town feel with historic Downtowns and a rich arts and culture scene that appeals to people looking for a slower pace of life.
A Weekend on the Pokey And Christiansburg Districts. 18M At Glen Lyn, Virginia
Spent the weekend railfanning the Pocahontas and Christiansburg Districts between Bluefield, WV and Roanoke, Virginia with Josh Pack. First train of the weekend that we caught was coal train S3K heading for the yard at Bluefield. After catching that train between Falls Mills and Bluefield. We set out for Bluefield Yard in hopes of catching something coming in. After listening to the scanner for a while, 18M showed up to drop power off for an eastbound coal train setting in the yard. As 18M was shuttling power over to the coal train, we decided to get ahead of it and head east to Glen Lyn, Virginia. After we sat there for about an hour waiting on the dispatcher as to what they were going to do with a train coming off of the Princeton - Deepwater District.
Eastbound manifest 18M is seen rolling by the power plant at Glen Lyn, Virginia as it makes its way east of Bluefield. This as it rolls on further east toward Christiansburg and Roanoke, Virginia.
