HBR 5008 in the Snow at Millbrook, Illinois on 2-2-2015
An EMD SD50 leads a light power trio on a rail clearing mission along the Illinois Railway. The train originated in Ottawa, Illinois and rolled to just west of Yorkville before returning.
A tip from Matt got me in position with little time to spare after slipping along the recently snow-packed roads. And the banked up snow here at this crossing made for some different shooting angles. You'll see me ducking out of the way in the going away shot after grabbing this photo.
A group of utility lineman pulled up a few minutes before the train showed. After I explained what was about to happen, they got out their cellphone cameras and graciously turned off the truck engines for some nice audio.

Fatal Structure Fire - 11 Osborne Rd. 2/15/14
PRESS RELEASE
February 16, 2014
This press release is regarding the tragic fire that occurred on February 15, 2014, at 11 Osborn Avenue in the Town of New Hartford. It is being issued jointly by New Hartford Fire Chief Thomas Bolanowski and New Hartford Police Chief Michael Inserra.
At 10:54 AM, on February 15, 2014, the Oneida County 911 Center received the first call reporting a structure fire at 11 Osborn Avenue in the Town of New Hartford. The caller advised that there was smoke and flames visible and that there were children trapped in the residence. Several additional calls were also received at the call center stating similar information.
Fire and Police were dispatched to the 11 Osborn Avenue location. Within minutes the first Police and Fire personnel were on the scene reporting that the structure was fully involved with heavy flames and smoke. At that time it was also confirmed that three residents were trapped inside the burning structure. The Fire Department immediately began an interior attack on the fire coupled with rescue operations. The intensity of the fire forced the firefighters to withdraw from the interior of the residence. Firefighting operations continued from the exterior in conjunction with rescue operations. Chainsaws were used to cut an entrance into a rear bedroom in an attempt to rescue two trapped children. Upon entry firefighters encountered heavy fire but were able to quickly locate the two children and remove them from the residence. Unfortunately both children had succumbed to the fire.
The exterior firefighting activities and rescue operations continued with urgency to locate the third victim still trapped within the residence. Firefighters from several additional fire departments soon joined New Hartford firefighters in fire suppression and support operations. New Hartford Fire Department was assisted by the following Fire Departments;
Willowvale Fire Company, New York Mills Fire Department, Clark Mills Fire Department, and the Clinton Fire Department. The Utica Fire Department also provided technical assistance to the investigators from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.
As firefighting activities continued National Grid arrived on the scene and turned off the electrical and natural gas utilities. Representatives from the American Red Cross also responded to the scene.
Heavy equipment was brought to the scene by the Town of New Hartford Highway Department. An excavator was used to clear away portions of the collapsed building allowing firefighters to gain access to the cellar of the structure where the third victim was located deceased.
At 2:52 PM the fire was declared under control. While firefighters continued putting out hotspots, several experienced Cause & Origin investigators from the New Hartford Fire Department, the New Hartford Police and the New York State Office of Fire Protection and Control commenced their investigation examining the scene to identify the cause of this deadly fire. After several hours of a detailed examination of the scene, coupled with information provided by the residents who were able to escape the burning structure, investigators were able to piece together a cause and origin of this fire.
The fire was determined to be accidental in nature with an origin in the area of an electrical appliance located in the northeast corner of the residence along the exterior wall. The fire was consistent with a failure in an electrical appliance. Investigators used every resource available during this investigation including bringing in outside assistance from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control to include a specially trained K-9. This investigation is still ongoing with additional interviews and review of the chain of events still being conducted. The three victims of the fire were transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's office where autopsies will be conducted and a cause of death determined.
The following eight individuals were in the residence at the time the fire broke out;
Janet M. Moore -- age 67 -- (home owner) transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital -- treated and released
Jessica Morinitti -- age 27 -- (granddaughter of Janet Moore) - transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital -- treated and released
Joshua Morinitti -- age 7 -- (son of Jessica) -- deceased
Jordan Morinitti -- age 3 - (son of Jessica) -- deceased
Brandon Hill -- age 27 -- (Jessica's fiancé) transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital -- treated and released
Mason Hill -- age -- 1 month old - (son of Jessica) - transported to St. Elizabeth's Hospital -- treated and released
Jennifer Moore -- age 21 -- (granddaughter of Janet Moore) deceased

SUMMARY
=======
The Hudson River is a 315-mile (507 km) river that flows from north to south primarily through eastern New York in the United States. The river originates in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, flows southward through the Hudson Valley, and eventually drains into the Atlantic Ocean at New York Harbor, between New York City and Jersey City. The river serves as a political boundary between the states of New Jersey and New York at its southern end. Further north, it marks local boundaries between several New York counties. The lower half of the river is a tidal estuary, deeper than the body of water into which it flows, occupying the Hudson Fjord, an inlet which formed during the most recent period of North American glaciation, estimated at 26,000 to 13,300 years ago. Tidal waters influence the Hudson's flow from as far north as the city of Troy.
The river is named after Henry Hudson, an Englishman sailing for the Dutch East India Company, who explored it in 1609, and after whom Hudson Bay in Canada is also named. It had previously been observed by Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano sailing for King Francis I of France in 1524, as he became the first European known to have entered the Upper New York Bay, but he considered the river to be an estuary. The Dutch called the river the North River – with the Delaware River called the South River – and it formed the spine of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. Settlements of the colony clustered around the Hudson, and its strategic importance as the gateway to the American interior led to years of competition between the English and the Dutch over control of the river and colony.
During the eighteenth century, the river valley and its inhabitants were the subject and inspiration of Washington Irving, the first internationally acclaimed American author. In the nineteenth century, the area inspired the Hudson River School of landscape painting, an American pastoral style, as well as the concepts of environmentalism and wilderness. The Hudson was also the eastern outlet for the Erie Canal, which, when completed in 1825, became an important transportation artery for the early-19th-century United States.

SUMMARY
=======
The Great Lakes (French: les Grands-Lacs), also called the Laurentian Great Lakes and the Great Lakes of North America, are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper mid-east region of North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. They consist of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario, although hydrologically, there are four lakes, Superior, Erie, Ontario, and Michigan-Huron.
The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth by total area, and second largest by total volume, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume. The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3), slightly less than the volume of Lake Baikal (23,615 km³, 22–23% of the world's surface fresh water). Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas. Not counting Lake Michigan-Huron, Lake Superior is the second largest lake in the world by area, and the largest freshwater lake by area. Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country.The Great Lakes began to form at the end of the last glacial period around 14,000 years ago, as retreating ice sheets exposed the basins they had carved into the land which then filled with meltwater. The lakes have been a major source for transportation, migration, trade, and fishing, serving as a habitat to a large number of aquatic species in a region with much biodiversity.
The surrounding region is called the Great Lakes region, which includes the Great Lakes Megalopolis.
