The Citadel and Forbidden Purple City-Hue, Vietnam (With Historical Facts)
I took a fascinating tour of an area rich in Vietnamese and American history. My guide Thanh had personally witnessed hand-to-hand combat here as a 12 year-old during the Vietnam War. Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam from 1802-1945 and the Forbidden Purple City contained the residence of the Emperor and Royal Family. Like the Forbidden City in Beijing, only royalty and invited guests could come here. The Citadel is a walled fortress and palace that was built in the early 1800's. During the 1968 Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue, thousands of Vietnamese and hundreds of Americans were killed during fighting here.

The Citadel and Imperial City of Hue, Vietnam
Hue is well known for its historic monuments, which have earned it a place in UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. The former imperial seat of government and Hue's prime attraction, The Citadel is a great sprawling complex of temples, pavilions, moats, walls, gates, shops, museums and galleries, featuring art and costumes from various periods of Vietnamese history. Thanks to its size, it is also delightfully peaceful - a rare commodity in Vietnam.
The grounds of the Imperial City were surrounded by a wall 2 kilometers by 2 kilometers, and the walls were surrounded by a moat. The water from the moat was taken from the Perfume River that flows through Hue. This structure is called the citadel. Inside the citadel was the Imperial City, with a perimeter of almost 2.5 kilometers. Inside the Imperial City was the imperial enclosure called the Purple Forbidden City in Vietnamese, a term similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing. Only the emperors, concubines, and those close enough to them were granted access to enter the forbidden city. The punishment for trespassing was death. Today, little of the forbidden city remains, though reconstruction efforts are in progress to maintain it as a historic tourist attraction.
The citadel was badly knocked about during fighting between the French and the Viet Minh in 1947, and again in 1968 during the Tet Offensive, when it was shelled by the Viet Cong and then bombed by the Americans. As a result, some areas are now only empty fields, bits of walls, and an explanatory plaque. Other buildings are intact, though, and a few are in sparkling condition. For the rest, while restoration has been going on for 20 years, there is still quite a long way to go.

Hue, known as Forbidden Purple City (Tử cấm thành), was used to be the capital city of Vietnam during the Nguyen Dynasty. Today, we are going to explore the Citadel and Imperial Palace within the imperial city. There is plenty of Chinese influence in Vietnamese history and Hue shows a lot of that.

Imperial and royal are two adjectives which would aptly describe Hue, a city which has managed to hold onto its old world charm, despite the many ravages of war and time. Located close to the meandering Perfume River, Hue is a scenic and calm place that you must visit on a trip to Vietnam.

Huế Imperial City Vietnam in 80 seconds - [Travel Film]
- Cung An Định – nơi vua Khải Định sống và học tập lúc trẻ.

With only a few hours to see something in Hue, Vietnam, I headed straight to the Imperial Citadel, which contains the Imperial City. This site was the seat of power of the Nguyen dynasty, which united the geography that we now know as Vietnam. Often compared to the Forbidden City in Beijing, the smaller-scale palace was home to the imperial family. This complex contained temples, government buildings, quarters dedicated to the women of the family, and the Royal Theatre, Vietnam's oldest working theater. The main part of the city is called the Forbidden Purple City, where the royal family exclusively reside.
While this place was constructed about 200 years ago, parts of it are in ruins. In the mid-1900s, the country was war-torn. Hue was not only invaded during the rise of the Viet Minh during the August Revolution, but it was bombed heavily by the U.S. during the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War. Now, there are efforts to restore the palace to its former glory.
