Top 5 Things to do in Hue, Vietnam
Hue is a small town in Vietnam full of rich culture and history. We spent 5 days exploring former royal palaces in the imperial citadel as well as tombs of some of the great Vietnamese Nguyen emperors.
For our first stop we take you to to the very famous Imperial City of Hue. Hue was the former capital of Vietnam two times throughout history and so Hue houses one of the most impressive ancient cities in Vietnam.
Address: Thành phố Huế, Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–5:30pm
Next up we head to a local Vietnamese market nearby. The largest of its kind in Hue being Dong Ba Market. It's 16000 square meters (not km as mentioned in the video sorry!) Worth a visit if you're looking for some cheap goods or a wide variety of Vietnamese cuisine and street food.
Address: 2 Trần Hưng Đạo, Phú Hoà, Thành phố Huế, Thừa Thiên
Hours: Monday - Sunday 6am–6pm
One thing you don't want to miss while you're in Hue is the Perfume River. Its waterways run throughout the entire city and many of the most popular tourist destinations lie along Perfume River's banks. We decided to travel via boat.
We went through tour operators
On the boat ride down Perfume River we stopped off at our next destination - Thien Mu Pagoda. You can also reach Thien Mu Pagoda by car but it is a little bit far. Going by boat to Thien Mu Pagoda is definitely the best option.
Address: Hương Hòa, Thành phố Huế, Hương Hòa Thành phố Huế Thừa Thiên Huế 532761, Vietnam
Hours: Monday - Sunday 8am–6pm
Finally you can't leave Hue without viewing the impressive tombs of the famous Vietnam emperors. We chose a mix of traditional design and architecture by visiting Minh Mạng's tomb:
Address: QL49, Hương Thọ, Hương Trà, Thừa Thiên Huế, Vietnam
And also what had to have been our favourite destination of Hue which was the Royal Tomb of Khai Dinh which architecturally was ahead of its time.
Address: Khải Định, Thủy Bằng, Hương Thủy, Thừa Thiên Huế 530000, Vietnam
Both tombs open from
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7am–5:30pm

The Citadel and Forbidden Purple City-Hue, Vietnam (With Historical Facts)
I took a fascinating tour of an area rich in Vietnamese and American history. My guide Thanh had personally witnessed hand-to-hand combat here as a 12 year-old during the Vietnam War. Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam from 1802-1945 and the Forbidden Purple City contained the residence of the Emperor and Royal Family. Like the Forbidden City in Beijing, only royalty and invited guests could come here. The Citadel is a walled fortress and palace that was built in the early 1800's. During the 1968 Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue, thousands of Vietnamese and hundreds of Americans were killed during fighting here.

Temples and Scooters in Hue, Vietnam
I have to say that upon arrival to Hue, Vietnam I didn't really have high hopes. The city itself if full on for tourists. It doesn't feel anything what I would have expected it to. After Hanoi, which was basically exactly how I imagined Vietnam, to my surprise, Hue felt quite fake. Moreover, the amount of people selling things constantly was really annoying.
That being said, once I jumped on a scooter and headed out of the city of Hue itself, it was much better. We explored some of the nearby temples and some of the ones farther afield than most tourists get to. It's proof that even in the most touristy locations you should press to get yourself off the beaten path. It's also proof that you don't have to go too far off the beaten path to find some really cool things.
In the end, my time in Hue, Vietnam was better than I would have expected and I again learned to not judge a travel destination by the cover.

Ting Ting and I (Trevor James, The Food Ranger), made our way to Vietnam solely to eat street food. Since we love street food around the world, we decided that Vietnam was the perfect holiday destination for street food to try, because it's supposed to be the best and we love watching new street food recipes and street food flavors as we adventure down deep, back alleyways, getting lost into new street food worlds. So far, in our Vietnamese street food tour series, we've eaten street food in Hanoi, and then we took the sleeper train south 12 hours to Hue. Hue is the old ancient capital of Vietnam, and is packed full of different street food to try. We spent 4 days here eating and couldn't get enough of all the street food. Asian street food is the best, and in Vietnam, it doesn't get any better!
We found 11 different Vietnamese street foods in this video. If you arrive here looking to eat, you can follow along with these addresses:
1) Bun Bo hue @02:44- The specialty street food Beef and pork broth noodle soup of Hue, Vietnam - It’s absolutely rich and delicious! Found at the Dong Ba market early morning around 730am. Go to the outside of the street market and find the old ladies with big pots of good street food and you’ll discover a ton!
2) Bun Hen @ 06:10 Spicy Clam noodle soup - Also found at the Dong Ba Market in Hue, Vietnam, in the early morning! Just look around the outside of the market, the perimeter, not on the inside.
3) Banh Tam Banana Leaf @ 09:44 wrapped around marinated shrimp - Found directly beside the Bun Hen at Dong Ba market
4) Veg Soup @ 11:27 - Also found at Dong Ba Street Food Market in Hue, Vietnam
5) Bun Tith Nuong @ 14:37 Grilled pork over top of rice noodles. These was my favorite meal from Hue, and so cheap at 10,000 Vietnamese dong! Bun Thit Nuong 66 Bạch Đằng
6) Banh Mi Vietnamese Sandwich @ 17:55- This one was quite average. But still fun to eat! This one was at the intersection of Xuan 68 and Le Thanh Ton street inside Hue’s old city.
7) Douhua Silken Tofu @ 21:27 - This was a street food vendor carrying the food on wooden poles, so you have to be lucky at the right place at the right time. We were at the location below around 4:30 PM and she came along.
8) Banh Tran Truong “Vietnamese Pizza made from rice paper” @ 22:54. You can find this one inside the old city on 14 Le Thanh Ton Street in Hue, Vietnam
9) Banh Ep - Flattened rice paper dough with raw egg grilled @ 22:54 - Same location as the Vietnamese rice paper pizza
10) Nem Lui Vietnamese Pork Skewers @ 25:56 - These were found at 241 Huynh Thuc Khang - TP, Hue, Vietnam
11) Banh Xeo Vietnamese pancakes @ 25:56 - Same location as above, 241 Hyun Thuc Khang - TP. Hue, Vietnam

The imperial city of Hue in central Vietnam was the home of the Nguyen Emperors and the nation’s capital from 1802 to 1945. When it comes to history and cultural heritage, palaces, tombs and temples, Hue has it all. Sitting astride the Perfume River, Hue is a picturesque and peaceful city which pervades a sense of harmony.
The northern shore of the river is dominated by the ancient Citadel, with its giant flag tower, mossy green walls and moat. Most of the city’s key historic sites lie in and around the Citadel including temples, various formal state palaces, the Imperial Enclosure and the Forbidden Purple City within it. Hue came under heavy attack during the American War and many of the imperial building were tragically destroyed or badly damaged. This was followed by a period of wilful neglect under the new Communist regime, until the 1990’s when the site became UNESCO World Heritage Listed and restoration began. Whilst only a few original buildings are intact the city still holds much appeal.

The ancient city of Hue - Vietnam Adventure with Kids
We only had one day in Hue (way to short) but we managed to explore the ancient city. The next day we were picked up by a private care to take us to Hoi An. Along the way the driver stopped at different places to let us explore. Our favorite stop was the Elephant Springs.
The imperial City of Hue
After wrapping up at Hoi An, Lyvonn and I hopped back onboard the Reunification Express and headed onto the ancient city of Hue. There are 2 main reasons why visitors would come to the ancient city of Hue. First, to visit the Royal tombs of the Nguyen Lords and secondly to visit the Imperial City.
Visiting Vietnam? Why not check out the imperial city of Hue?
