Postcard from Hue Vietnam - in search of the 1968 Tet Offensive
We visit Hue Citadel in central Vietnam just before the fiftieth anniversary of the Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue, looking for traces of the battle and the city's account of it. The Battle of Hue was one of the longest, bloodiest and most important of the Vietnam War. But a visitor to Hue could pass through the city and not even know it occurred.

The Citadel and Forbidden Purple City-Hue, Vietnam (With Historical Facts)
I took a fascinating tour of an area rich in Vietnamese and American history. My guide Thanh had personally witnessed hand-to-hand combat here as a 12 year-old during the Vietnam War. Hue was the imperial capital of Vietnam from 1802-1945 and the Forbidden Purple City contained the residence of the Emperor and Royal Family. Like the Forbidden City in Beijing, only royalty and invited guests could come here. The Citadel is a walled fortress and palace that was built in the early 1800's. During the 1968 Tet Offensive and the Battle of Hue, thousands of Vietnamese and hundreds of Americans were killed during fighting here.

In June 1802 Nguyễn Ánh took control of Vietnam and proclaimed himself Emperor Gia Long. His rule was recognized by China in 1804. Gia Long consulted with geomancers to decide which was the best place for a new palace and citadel to be built. After the geomancers had decided on a suitable site in Huế, building began in 1804. Thousands of workers were ordered to produce a wall and moat, 10 kilometers long. Initially the walls were earthen, but later these earthen walls were replaced by stone walls, 2 meters thick.[citation needed]
The citadel was oriented to face the Huong River to the east. This was different from the Forbidden City in Beijing, which faces south. The Emperor's palace is on the east side of the citadel, nearest the river. A second set of walls and a second moat was constructed around the Emperor's palace. Many more palaces and gates and courtyards and gardens were subsequently added. The reigns of the last Vietnamese Emperors lasted until the mid-1900s. At the time, the Purple Forbidden City had many buildings and hundreds of rooms. It suffered from termite and cyclone damage, but was still very impressive. Many bullet holes left over from the Vietnam War can be observed on the stone walls.
In the early morning hours of January 31, 1968, as part of the Tet Offensive a Division-sized force of North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong soldiers launched a coordinated attack on Huế seizing most of the city. During the initial phases of the Battle of Hue, due to Huế's religious and cultural status, Allied forces were ordered not to bomb or shell the city, for fear of destroying the historic structures; but as casualties mounted in house-to-house fighting these restrictions were progressively lifted and the fighting caused substantial damage to the Imperial City. Out of 160 buildings only 10 major sites remain because of the battle, such as the Thái Hòa and Cần Thanh temples, Thế Miếu, and Hiển Lâm Các. The city was made a UNESCO site in 1993. The buildings that still remain are being restored and preserved. The latest and so far the largest restoration project is planned to conclude in 2015.

Vietnam / Hue / South Vietnamese Prison Museum
This prison was used by the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) to hold North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong (VC) soldiers. It’s since been turned into a museum meant to show the harsh conditions these men were forced to live in. I have however been to Hoa Lo prison in Hanoi and can tell you first hand the prisons in Vietnam during the war were all bad. Lol. No one gets the moral high ground on this one. But please travel to Hue and check out this prison.
Hue 1968: A Turning Point of the American War in Vietnam
In January, 1968, the fighting in Vietnam was at a stalemate. General Westmoreland, commander of the American forces, announced that the end of the war was in view, but the North Vietnamese had different ideas. In his book, Hue 1968, author and journalist Mark Bowden, discusses the Tet Offensive and how the North Vietnamese planned to win the war in a single stroke with military actions and popular uprisings across South Vietnam, but the most crucial part of the plan was the capture of Hue, the country’s cultural capital. A book signing will follow the program.

Verlassener Wasserpark • Lost Place Vietnam • Urbex • Hue | VLOG #233

Vietnam War Remnants Museum-Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City)
The War Remnants Museum in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) features photographic exhibits and war memorabilia from the Vietnam War and the story is told from the point of view of the Communist North Vietnamese government. As I say in the video, it's best not to eat before viewing some of the photographs, which can be quite graphic.
The museum originally opened in 1975 as the Exhibition House for US and Puppet Crimes located in the premises of the former United States Information Agency building. In 1990, the name changed to Exhibition House for Crimes of War and Aggression, dropping both U.S. and Puppet. In 1995, following the normalization of diplomatic relations with the United States and end of the US embargo from a year before, the references to war crimes and aggression were dropped from the museum's title as well; it became the War Remnants Museum It is one of the most popular museums in Vietnam, attracting approximately half a million visitors every year. According to the museum's own estimates, about two-thirds of these are foreigners.
