11 November 2019 - Day 81 - Huerquehue National Park | 330

Today we head out on a hike in one of Pucons well known national parks - Huerquehue National Park! Just under an hour drive from town and Lake Caburgua, it is one of the main things to do in Pucon, Chlie!! We leave at mid-morning with our little Suzuki and picnic food, ready for a big day out! ???????????? ????????????

We arrive and start our hike just before midday and hike through scenic lakes and visit the nearby waterfalls ????????. We arrive at our lunch spot 3 hours in, and enjoy our picnic lunch by Lago Verde! A warm afternoon time certainly flew by as we ran out of time to circle the lake and had to make our 2hr journey back! ⌛️

Spending the day with a Swiss and German both speaking German half the day I almost forgot I was in Chile and felt like I teleported to Europe for the day. The girls said the scenery is quite similar and reminds them of home! ⛰????????

After arriving back into town we watch a beautiful sunset by the bay and head to our usual dinner spot for a well earned dinner after hiking 16km!! ???? An awesome day out with these 2 as I prepare for an even bigger day tomorrow for our Volcano hike up Volcan Villarrica!! ????

Un paseo junto a unos amigos por el sendero de los lagos hasta el lago toro, lugar donde termina este sendero, nos llevo casi unas tres horas llegar a destino y la dificultad fue media, aunque en algunos tramos hicimos un par de paradas para el descanso.

We traveled to Pucon in the south of chile, which is one of my favorite places on earth. We went hiking in the national parks, swimming under a waterfall and relaxing at the cleanest beaches of all time or in the most wonderful hot water thermes ever. With the beautiful lake and the volcano at sunset a day couldn't be more perfect.

Pucón is a Chilean city and commune administered by the municipality of Pucón. It is located in the Province of Cautín, Araucanía Region, 100 km to the southeast of Temuco and 780 km to the south of Santiago. It is on the eastern shore of Lake Villarrica, and Villarrica volcano is located roughly 17 km to the south.

Pucón's location by a lake and volcano, along with its relatively stable climate, especially in summer, make it a popular destination for tourists. It offers a variety of sports and activities for tourists, including water skiing, snow skiing, backpacking, white water rafting and kayaking, horse back riding, natural hot springs, zip line rides, skydiving and guided ascents of Villarrica volcano.

Villarrica is the closest volcano to Pucón and is frequently climbed from the town. Other volcanoes in the area include Mocho-Choshuenco, Quetrupillán and Lanín. Villarrica has had more than 82 eruptions since 1558, the most recent of which occurred on March 3, 2015. It is possible to climb it throughout the year, if weather and volcanic activity permit. During winter, the summit is completely covered by snow, and offers views of at least seven of the surrounding lakes.

National parks in the area include Villarrica National Park, Huerquehue National Park and Villarrica National Reserve. Some of the main lakes near Pucón are Villarrica, Caburgua and Tinquilco.

There are several hot springs and spas in the commune of Pucón and the surrounding area, including: Palguín, Rio Blanco, Huife, Quimey-Co and Los Pozones. The nearby commune of Curarrehue also contains popular spas, including: Menetúe, San Luis, Trancura, Panqui and Ancamil.

There’s only one bus to Huerquehue each morning from Pucón, and it leaves early.

Indeed, most of the usually bustling tourist town was still sleeping off the previous night’s excesses as we pulled out of the terminal; the sun still barely above the horizon. We dozed as the bus trundled along the highway, passing the little farms and squat cottages which dot the Araucanian countryside.

Arriving at the park an hour later, the passengers unloaded and lined up outside the small CONAF cabin to pay the entrance fee. The official on duty inside was a picture of contentedness. He smiled and joked while noting down nationalities, and had the air of a man who had found what he wanted, and didn’t need anything else.

We opted for the “Tres Lagos” (Three Lakes) hike; a five-hour round trip which is one of the easiest routes in the park, but still involves some 500 metres of ascent to reach the end of the trail.

Setting off, we cut through the dense, temperate rainforest along the edge of Lago Tinquilco, whose water matched the deep green of the surrounding trees. The footpath soon opened out into fields of sheep and pigs, and passed through a couple of campsites perched on the shores of the lake. Looking up, thick, grey mist drifted over nearby hills as the trail plunged once again into the forest.

We soon began to climb, and the lush, humid landscape gave way to a sparser, drier climate above. Before long the sun had burned off what remained of the morning fog, and gaps in the trees allowed for brief glimpses of the lake below; now a dazzling blue. Small lizards, sunning themselves on the path, scuttled away as we passed by. We began to see the unmistakable outline of Chile’s national tree; the araucaria, towering over us at a height of up to 40 metres.

At a couple of points the trail winds back on itself, and hikers who stop for a rest at the bend are rewarded with magnificent views of the snow-capped Villarrica volcano in the distance, enveloped by ever-shifting clouds. There are also a few waterfalls along the way which are well worth the slight detour needed to reach them.

The rewards for hours of uphill hiking are the three stunning lakes at the top which give the trail its name. Lago Chico, Lago Verde and Lago Toro all lie at over 1200 metres above sea level, but are separated from each other only by a few minutes walking, and all three are beautiful in their own right.

Surrounded by araucaria forests hung upon dramatic cliff-faces, they are the perfect end to a trail which, for me, ranks among the best that Chile has to offer.

Pucón, Chile - Things to do - Travel Guide

Pucón is extremely popular both with Chileans and foreigners for the beautiful views of Volcano Villarrica , which is the highest and most-active climbable volcano in South America. The city centre is a backpacker's paradise, filled with travel agencies offering a wide range of day trips. Apparently, also the night-life is quite active. If you don't like it crowded, avoid January and February as they are the busiest months. We visited in February.

We stayed just outside of the town in Caburgua on a lovely tranquil estate, Hotel Salto del Carileufu . From here we could explore the area avoiding the busy town centre unless eating out. Don't get me wrong it was a lovely place but in this guide we stick to things you can do in the area, around Pucón, rather than the town.

We visited numerous Waterfalls like Ojos Del Caburgua, and Salto El Léon. Spent hours just driving the local area with so many lakes and views to stop at and take pictures.

A highlight shown in the video was Termas Geometricas. It's a 2 hour scenic drive from Pucon and the last 30 minutes is on a bumpy gravel road, but don't let that put you off. Most 2 wheel drive cars are fine if you take it slow! It is really is an amazing place, Highly recommend you make the effort.

Este parque está localizado nos Andes, em Pucón, na região de Auracania. Há muitas trilhas de níveis moderado e difícil que dão em lagoas e cachoeiras. Seu terreno de mais de 12 ha é muito montanhoso, podendo chegar à 2 mil metros de altitude. Além disso, há campings para os que desejam conhecer o parque com Calma.

Estamos de vuelta!!

Recuerdos del verano cuando tuvimos la suerte de llegar al Parque nacional Huerquehue, uno de los lugares más lindos en los que hemos estado, eso sí uno de los más agotadores que nos tocó realizar, el camino se realiza a través de bosques de robles, araucarias y lagos muy lindos.

Hiking With Chileans In The National Park Huerquehue

My third day in Pucón was unexpected and I did not see that coming that I join a group of young chileans from Santiago who also hiked through the park and asked me to join them. I had so much fun and I can't tell you enough how I enjoyed hanging out with them and only communicate in spanish. What chilean word do you know?
