Alsace: Domaine Hugel et Fils - Alsace's Geological Diversity
Located in Riquewihr, Alsace, France, Maison Hugel et Fils has been producing fine wine since 1639. Today, it owns more than 25 hectares of vines all located in the vicinity of Riquewihr, with half of its property under the Grand Cru classification.
One of the unique features of Alsace as a winegrowing region is the incredible diversity of soils found in it. Geological formations astonishingly vary in age and origin within the shortest distances in Alsace.
In this video, Marc Hugel, technical director at Hugel et Fils, describes and further explains these soil variations in the surrounding vineyards of Riquewihr. As Marc puts it, If Alsace is the winegrowing region in France with the most diverse soils, Riquewihr has the most diverse geology in Alsace. However, Marc believes that only experience can really teach a winemaker how to genuinely express the unique soils through each grape variety, and at the same time, transmit the soils’ typicity to the wine.

Il primo vino aziendale e il più importante come la famille Hugel si ostina ripetere giustamente all’inizio di ogni serata di degustazione. Così come in Champagne, troppo facile fare grandi millesimati e vini ottimi da cru storici, molto più difficile ogni anno produrre centinaia di migliaia di bottiglie di un vino fresco, immediato, profumato eppure complesso e mai banale capace di trasmettere in un sorso tutta la magia dell’Alsazia. Si parte con la componente riesling, agrumi e immediatezza e soprattutto acidità e freschezza, quel tocco “crisp” che cattura il sorso e non lo molla, poi il pinot gris con il suo corpo rotondità e ricchezza, poi gewuerztraminer e muscat a dare aromi pregiati e intensi dalle note tropicali alle dolcezze di rosa e lytchees… e infine il sylvaner e pinot bianco a dare la bevibilità e scorrevolezza. E infatti ciò che colpisce di più in questo vino dal grandioso rapporto qualità prezzo (15euro) è la sua capacità di scorrere e farsi bere senza pensieri ma tanta soddisfazione. Chapeau!

Stone Fruit, Bright Acidity, Dry
Very bright colour, straw-light, approaching light golden. The nose is very pure, quite precise. To me this is just-about-barely ripe stone fruit, no over-ripeness, just finely ripe grapes. With hints of white peach, yellow plum, some apricot. On top of that a lot of zesty and spicy notes. I think a little bit like Asian spices, lemongrass and ginger that gives a zest to it all. Really good bite on the palate. I really like this freshness. This is a wine I feel it is once again, we talk about ripe grapes, high degree of ripeness, but it is vinified into complete dryness. Even if there is a slight hint of fruity sweetness. Most people would approach this as dry, otherwise, I think that slight balance of sugar can be very user-friendly particularly with spicy Asian style food. Anyhow back to the taste. I really like it, it is has a broad texture. It is quite bold. With abundant stone fruit on the palate. But the acidity is really there all along. Really bright and poised. Long pure and lingering finish. I think really a fine example that can combine quite exuberant fruit with a strict dryness. A positive austerity I would say.

The main street has plenty of shops and restaurants and is full of life with its magical atmosphere. You should also wander along the side streets - they are interesting, too. Just walk around and enjoy yourself.

Die Hauptstraße hat viele Geschäfte und Restaurants und ist voller Leben mit seiner magischen Atmosphäre. Sie sollten auch durch die Seitenstraßen wandern - sie sind auch interessant. Einfach herumlaufen und Spaß haben.

[PL] Miasto Riquewihr w Alzacji jest naprawdę doskonałym miejscem do odwiedzenia. Ma wiele pięknie zachowanych budynków i kolorowych domów. Główna ulica ma mnóstwo sklepów i restauracji i jest pełna życia oraz magicznej atmosfery. Warto także przejść się bocznymi uliczkami - są one również interesujące. Po prostu zwiedzaj, spaceruj i baw się dobrze.

Riquewihr - Alsace - France
Riquewihr est une commune française située dans le département du Haut-Rhin, en région Alsace.
Riquewihr est un village d'Alsace, très réputé et visité pour son charme. Riquewihr jouit d'une grande célébrité, non seulement en Alsace et en France, mais aussi en Europe.
Riquewihr est une cité médiévale située en plein cœur du vignoble alsacien qui doit sa renommée à son caractère pittoresque et à son remarquable patrimoine architectural. Le village est situé sur la route des vins d'Alsace, à 10 km au nord de Kaysersberg et 4 km au sud de Hunawihr et de Schoenenberg Blottie à l'entrée d'un vallon boisé, protégée par le Schoenenberg contre les vents du nord, Riquewihr surplombe légèrement la plaine d'Alsace et offre une vue magnifique sur la vallée du Rhin, depuis les Alpes jusqu'aux abords de Sélestat. Aussi, son climat est, par sa douceur, particulièrement favorable à la culture de la vigne, les coteaux au sol lourd et aux versants raides n'offrant point d'autres possibilités de culture. Il est situé dans le canton de Kaysersberg. Sa particularité est d'être situé entre trois collines, qui ont donné le logo de la maison Hugel et fils, l'une des plus grandes familles viticoles de Riquewihr. Ce village conservé ses ruelles et ses maisons d'autrefois car il a eu la chance d'échapper aux destructions des deux guerres mondiales.
Riquewihr se trouve à 3 km de Hunawihr où est installé le parc des cigognes, à 5 km de Ribeauvillé, 5 km de Kaysersberg, 13 km de Colmar et 70 km de Strasbourg.
