Nevada History: Humbolt Museum & the Richardson Saunders House
The Humboldt Museum, here in Winnemucca, offers a glimpse into the past, from the First Nations who originally inhabited the area, to the founding of Winnemucca, to the Art Nouveau period, and even up until today.
The Museum houses the Richardson-Saunders House, which is an 1899 Eastlake-style home. The house stayed in the same family that’s 103 years before it was moved from Railroad Street and donated to the Humboldt Museum.

MAIL CALL AND AN ABANDONED HOMESTEAD IN BEOWAWE, NEVADA!
I was on my way to another video site when I came across this abandoned Homestead in Beowawe, Nevada. This is a tiny little spot in the road town on the way to Elko, Nevada. I'm glad I stopped to take a look because it was definitely worth it.
Thank you to Ian Y Gath for the lovely postcard.

EXPLORING MIDAS, NEVADA!! SURPRISE GUEST!!
Gold was discovered in 1907 in Midas, Nevada by a man named James McDuffy. The town was originally named Gold Circle. The government at the time said they couldn't use the word gold in the name, so they changed the town's name to Midas. Nearby, another town spring up named Summit. Midas had a population of 1500 to 2000. It had saloons, hotels, General Mercantile shops and two newspapers; the News and the Miner. Most of the townspeople, however, had moved on to bigger camps by 1908. In 1909, a mill was constructed which helped support the community until a fire blazed through in 1922, wiping most of the mill out. The mine was officially closed during World War II along with the post office. The town was never completely abandoned. Electricity was introduced in 1989 and the town barely survives today. There are no Services here. There is a permanent population of 7 residents presently and most of the homes and cabins are summer homes owned by people from Reno, Nevada.

Travel Nevada’s ‘Loneliest Road in America’
Nevada is a road trip waiting to happen. At 109,781 square miles, it is the seventh largest state in the Union, with highways and byways past old mining towns, massive sand dunes and forested mountains. A trip on the Loneliest Road in America (also known as the stretch of U.S. 50 inside Nevada) is a great way to explore the Silver State.
A popular place to start is Reno, where downtown lodging options include the Eldorado Resort Casino, Circus Circus Reno and the Silver Legacy Resort Casino. Head east on Interstate 80, and around the town of Fallon, you will connect with Loneliest Road in America. That was how Life magazine described the road in 1986, adding “we warn all motorists not to drive there unless they’re confident of their survival skills.”
It might be lonely, but it’s also full of beauty and adventure. Gin and vodka fans may want to check out Frey Ranch Distillery in Fallon, while off-road enthusiasts will enjoy Sand Mountain Recreation Area, featuring a 600-foot-tall sand dune. On the eastern end of the state, there is Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park, with six 30-foot-tall beehive-shaped ovens used in the late 19th century, as well as Great Basin National Park, home of the amazing Lehman Caves. There’s also the historical Nevada Northern Railway in Ely, whose history is chronicled at the East Ely Railroad Depot Museum, and the McGill Drugstore Museum, a curious remnant of mid-20th century America.
If you’ve traveled the Loneliest Road as far as Ely, you may want to start heading north to the ranching and mining city of Elko, home of the Western Folklife Center, which puts on the annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. You can head back to Reno on Interstate 80, which roughly follows the path pioneers took in the mid-19th century to reach the gold fields of California. Great stops include the California Trail Interpretive Center just west of Elko; the community of Winnemucca, home of the Humboldt Museum; and Lovelock, where you and your sweetie can “lock your love” in Lovers Lock Plaza.

New Frontier RV Park Winnemucca, Nevada Ruff Road Review
Our little happy troop of me, Gary, Terra, and Luna are still trekking west on Interstate 80 in our class A motorhome, Ruff Road. However, it's time to leave I80 and head north to Oregon so Winnemucca, Nevada was a logical choice for a short stay. We stayed at New Frontier RV Park and enjoyed the full hook-ups and getting laundry done!
This park is huge and very clean. It's mostly gravel and cement, but there are a few patches of grass and each site has a few small trees. The park is nicely landscaped. Even though it's a large park, the sites are angled so you still have a sense of your own space. It is a Good Sam park so if you are a member, you get the 10% discount.
If you have a small dog, the park has a nice dog run. That didn't work for our girls, they would fly right over the little fence if they got the chance. Dogs are not allowed on the grass, which can be a problem if you have a flower like our Luna that only wants to go in grass. There are gravel roads around the park to walk on and a lightly traveled road as an alternative to the concrete and gravel. We did have to watch for burrs and other prickly things in the weeds along the roads. Also, we were there during a Mormon cricket swarm. These creatures are disgusting, like roaches. They were really bad on the outside of the park, primarily on one side. Thankfully, the park was mostly cricket free. There were piles of dead crickets outside the park so not sure if they were poisoned or what. The girls managed to snack on a couple before we could stop them. Ugh! They didn't suffer any ill effects. We did some searching for other places to walk and found a peaceful little park near downtown Winnemucca called Riverview Park. There is a path along the Humbolt River, green grass, picnic tables. It's not very big but provided a nice place to walk the pups instead of on gravel, concrete, and through burrs.
We were in Winnemucca for three nights so we had time to check out the area. We visited Veteran's Memorial Park and the Humbolt Museum. Veteran's Memorial Park is a small, grassy park with several military war machines on display. Nice displays and the helicopter and airplane are up off the ground as if in flight. The Humbolt Museum is an indoor museum as well as buildings, tool and equipment exhibits. There are several informational kiosks about the area's history and the buildings. Unfortunately, the museum itself was closed during the time we were in Winnemucca but we read the kiosks and viewed the outside displays.
So if you are traveling along I80 in Winnemucca, Nevada and need a place to stay for the night, you can probably get a spot at New Frontier RV Park. We noticed that the park filled up at night and cleared out each morning. We cleared out and are on our way to Oregon. Stay tuned for more Ruff Road Reviews.

Nevada History: Golconda & Historic Marker 105 Golconda
Nevada historic marker number 105 tells a little bit of Golconda’s story. The town was founded in 1898 during a brief mining boom, growing to about 500 people with the hope that it would grow even more.
While Golconda was a mining town, it first received fame as a stop on the California Emigrant trail in the mid-1800s. It was known for its hot springs.
For more information, visit the Humboldt Museum at To learn more about Nevada’s history, visit TravelNevada.com and the State Historic Preservation Office at shpo.nv.gov
If you visit Golconda, please respect “No Trespassing” signs, as the hot springs are on private property, and are not open to the public.
