BERLIN CITY TOUR: Visiting Humboldt Box, Berlin Palace Humboldt Forum

------
The Humboldt-Box shows visitors the new Berlin Palace Humboldt Forum from some surprising angles. It highlights various impressive aspects related to the palace’s former and latest history and to the state-of-the-art construction technology used on the site. One exhibit which has proved particularly popular with the audience is the large-scale model of “Berlin around 1900”. The Humboldt Box is currently one of the city’s most visited attractions. It is the showcase for the Berlin Palace Humboldt Forum. On display are examples of innovative exhibition concepts. The Humboldt brothers would have approved of the “haven for arts and sciences” that is being created here. The tour around the interactively designed exhibition floors becomes a journey of discovery that engages all senses. The top floor offers views across the palace construction site and the museums on Museumsinsel. It may be a good idea to set aside some time to spend at the café/restaurant located there, which has panorama terraces. (Source:

Humboldt Forum - Berlin's City Palace | Made in Germany
Germany's biggest cultural building project is taking shape near Berlin's Museum Island. There is also a new subway line under construction. Those in charge hope to avoid the skyrocketing costs and postponed deadlines that have plagued other prestige projects such as the new Berlin airport.

I am not the only person who thinks #Gendarmenmarkt is the most beautiful place in #Berlin.
Just ask every other tour in the city and you will here the same answer.
At first glance the square doesn’t look extra special. many classic European squares look somewhat similar, with the same renaissance style.
But consider the extreme destruction this city has gone through during WWII, it is actually quite rare to find such a remnant in the city center.
That not to say artillery and air raids did not damaged Gendarmenmarkt. The beautiful buildings here almost collapsed after the war, but an amazing restoration work made it possible for us to enjoy the place like in old times.
The square got its name after a battalion of gendarmes that was stationed here in the 18th century.
The French Church was built for the Huguenots community that escaped Louis XIV and found refuge in Berlin during the 17th century. And today the church has a nice restaurant and a museum of the Huguenots’ history.
The German church on the other side of the square was design to look similar to the French church to make the square symmetric. This church belongs to the Lutheran community. And today it’s a museum of German history.
The Konzerthaus Berlin is the most recent building here, it was built by the famous Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1821 on the ruins of the National Theatre. Today, it is the home of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin.
Nearby Gendarmenmarkt, #Bebelplatz is also a stunning looking square.
With the Berlin State Opera building, St. Hedwig's Cathedral and the Humboldt University. Bebel Platz is also a very important historical square. Here in may the 10th 1933 a group of students and professors burned 20,000 books as part of a Nazi campaign to purify the German culture as they saw it.
The books were those written by Jewish, pacifist, socialist, and communist authors among others.
Some of the most famous names are: Karl max, Tomas Man and Heinrich Heine who wrote in his play “Almansor” the famous sentence: “That was but a prelude; where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people as well.
It is chilling to grasp the fact this is what actually happened in the end.
Behind Bebelplatz the Friedrichswerder Church is an historically important church that was built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Today it is permanently close due to structural damage from nearby building activity.
Next to it, the Bauakademie was also built by Karl Schinkel. It was a place were master builders learn about the high art of architecture while ignoring the technical aspects of construction.
It was destroyed during WWII and today it is an alternative culture center. you can enter between the ruins, in the middle of the night, to find techno parties on some weekends

Reichstag Berlin - author of the architect Paul Vallo in the style of the Italian High Renaissance. The first stone in the foundation of the building of the German parliament was laid June 9, 1884 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. Construction lasted ten years and was completed already under the Kaiser William II. On February 27, 1933, the building of the Reichstag was burned as a result of arson. (G) (O) The Russian Embassy in Berlin is the main headquarters of the Russian diplomatic representation in Germany. The embassy is located in the Berlin district of Mitte and occupies a complex of buildings in several houses along Unter den Linden Street, built in 1949-1951 in the style of socialist classicism, which is an architectural monument. The main building on Unter den Linden is next to several administrative and residential buildings along the streets of Berenstrass and Glinkastrasse. The entire complex of buildings occupies a whole block in the center of Berlin, not far from the Brandenburg Gate. The first building of the embassy was built in 1837 instead of the current embassy. In those days, the Russian Empire for a permanent diplomatic mission in Prussia acquired a two-story building in Berlin in the Rococo style with a plot of land between the streets of Unter den Linden and Berenstrass.
Unter den Linden
PANORAMIO, BOOKMOUSE
Unter den Linden (German under the lindens) - one of the main and most famous boulevards of Berlin, got its name because of its adorning limes. The length of the street is 1390 m, the maximum width is 60 m. The street leads from Paris Square to the Schlossbrücke bridge across the River Spree, where Unter den Linden replaces Karl Liebknecht Strasse. Types appeared on the site of the present Unter den Linden in 1647 on the orders of Friedrich Wilhelm. On this road the Great Elector rode horseback from the royal palace to his hunting grounds in the Tiergarten. 1000 lindens and 1000 walnut trees formed an alley in six rows. In 1770, Frederick II decided to build an avenue with ceremonial buildings. For this, 44 houses were destroyed, which did not correspond to the ideas of the Elector. In their place were built 33 mansions for the nobility and spacious homes for wealthy citizens.
