The Berlin Flak Tower
In this Vlog we start our day at the beautiful Brandenburg Gate before moving onto the Reichstag, the Tiergarten Soviet War Memorial and the enormous Flak Tower at Humboldthain. We eat dinner in what was Hitler's Reich Chancellery courtyard and finish off the day with a night time stroll around the city.

We are not Historians. We are two ordinary chaps who are learning about WW2 history and documenting our journey. We are exploring this period of history from the sides of both the Allies and Axis. Those with sympathetic views towards the Nazi regime or hold any type of extreme views are not welcome here on WW2 Nation.
Humboldthain Flak Tower, the last line of air defence - Historic Berlin
Historic Berlin historicberlin.com
In the final years of the war, skies above Berlin were frequently thick with allied planes on bombing missions. As the scream of sirens echoed across the city, frightened Berliners flocked to the formidable bombproof Humboldthain Flak Tower to seek shelter.
When the air war entered a new and deadlier phase, one of the main perils for pilots was the possibility of a direct hit from antiaircraft guns on top of the giant flak towers constructed in the Humboldthain, Tiergarten and Friedrichshain public parks in 1941.
The Germans fought viciously from the roofs of these giant buildings – sending thousands of explosives shooting into the skies in the hope of hitting an enemy aircraft.
The Humboldthain tower was considered one of the safest in Berlin, with a massive roof arsenal consisting of 128mm and 20mm antiaircraft guns, a sophisticated communications network and a huge storage of essential supplies, including medical provisions and foodstuffs.

In World War 2 Germany constructed several “Flak Türme” or in English Flak Towers. There were located in 3 cities, namely, Berlin, Hamburg and Vienna. Many of them actually survived up to this day, because they were usually too difficult to destroy. For instance, in Vienna all 6 are still standing and they were also the most modern ones.

Humboldthain Flak Tower
During WW2 three flak towers were built in Berlin. After the war, two of the flak towers were destroyed completely but they were not able to demolish the Humboldthain Flak Tower completely. The north side remained almost undamaged and it is still one the most beautiful sights in Berlin. It is located in the Gesundbrunnen district right in opposite to the well known shopping mall Gesundbrunnen Center. The Gesundbrunnen district is among the best places to stay in Berlin.

Flakbunker Humboldthain - Tour E (Humboldthain Extrem)

Zeitzeugen berichten: Der Flakturm Humboldthain
