This is a privately operated track known as one of the great walks in New Zealand. Its a 3 day 2 night walk that climbs to 950m where the lodge is located. This is from sea level on the first day, though most of this is done in the last 7km before the lodge so it is a bit of a grunt.
There is a lot of boardwalk on the track (More details in 2nd video description) and the accommodation has not just the usual selection of facilities (beds and benches) but also power, cooking facilities, leather couches, a log burner, showers and a bar.
Thanks to the rest of the crew for tolerating me and allowing there likeness to be shown (In order of bridge crossing @3:05 Dave, Tom, Cam, Sophie, Sacha and Shirley)

The second day is along the top of the ridge all the way down to sea level. So descending from 950m to sea level and Port Craig Lodge. This day is rather exposed so if the weather is less than ideal windy, foggy, rainy etc it won't be a enjoyable day.
Most of the day is spent on boardwalk along the top of the ridge which just seems to continue until you start to descend to the Tramway. This Tramway was used for transporting logs from Big River to Port Craig over 3 viaducts which remain in relatively good condition and are walked over. The tramway itself is relatively in tact minus the tracks you are walking along the old sleepers so the ground is uneven and tripping hazards exist.
Port Craig lodge in near the center of the old settlement now fully overgrown with native bush apart from a few walls and The Schoolhouse (Which is the DOC hut here). There is a nice beach to swim at nearby just be aware the Sand-flies are voracious so lather yourself in repellent.
The Port Craig lodge has all the amenities as Okaka lodge plus cell, camera charging facilities and a fridge for a nice cold beer at the end of the day.

Third of 3 uploads of The Hump Ridge Track

The third and final day of The Hump Ridge Track see you walking along the coastline back to the car park through a myriad of interesting ecosystems and geological structures. It is along a DOC track that is used considerably more than the rest of the Hump Ridge track due to it linking into a number of DOC tracks and huts along the south coast.
Due to this fact and the general climate it is probably the boggiest of all the days and the most aggressively traveled by sand-flies so make sure you are well covered in insect repellent. The track is relatively flat although it does undulate considerable in some areas . A few interesting locations are Camp Creek which is a very deep gorge like stream which you walk over and the second beach you come to which has unique stone pillars and a natural rock reef.
Third member of the core Trail-ers family due in June 2019 so uploads will be sporadic and infrequent though I may upload a Winter edition (ski Resort) and maybe a joint Fail-er of walks that didn't go according to plan :P .

Hump Ridge Track 2020
We walked the Hump Ridge Track in early 2020. It was a fantastic experience. The wide variety of terrain (coastal, sub-alpine, tram tracks, beaches, swing-bridges and viaducts) ensured that there was never a boring moment. Cloud, rolling in on our ascent, obscured any views on our first day; we were blessed with clear skies for the two days thereafter.
