Hunder: A quiet village in the Nubra Valley
Place Details:
Beautiful but remote, Hunder village sits like an oasis in the middle of cold desert in Nubra valley of Jammu and Kashmir. Seven km from Diskit which is known for its Buddhist monastery, Nubra has acquired fame for its sand dunes, the cold desert that surrounds it, Bactrian camels and its breath-taking natural beauty.
Situated close the Siachen glacier and Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir in north India, entry beyond Hunder village is barred as the area ahead is controlled by the Indian Army. Hunder is approximately 160 km from Leh and one has to cross Khardung La, the world’s highest motorable pass to reach the remote village.
The high altitude desert, with rolling expanse of sand dunes and barren landscape is the USP of Hunder village. The cold desert and sand dunes seem enigma to scores of tourists who come to visit the spectacle.
Bactrian camels are another attraction. Native to the steppes of central Asia, the Bactrian camel has two humps, in contrast to the single-humped camels found in Rajasthan and other parts of India. The Bactrian camels were the main mode of transport when Ladakh was an important stopover on the ancient trade routes with Central Asia.
Joyrides on the Bactrian camel through the sand dunes is a must do for the tourists who visit Hunder. Camel safari takes around two hours.
Hunder is also the place where you can find forests of sea-buckthorn, a medicinal plant rich in bio-molecules, vitamins and nutritive properties and popularly known as ‘Leh Berry’.
Though the area surrounding Hunder is arid and desolate, the village, however, is a vast expanse of green and abounds with cultivable land. Horticulture products, including, apricots, walnuts, almonds, apples and various fruits and flowers, from Nubra are much sought after.
Because of its remote location, tourist facilities are limited in Hunder. However, the village is popular with campers. The tented accommodations maintained by private operators are not low in comforts.
Hunder is also famous for its Buddhist monastery known as Hundur gompa situated close to the Diskit monastery. It is one of the oldest monasteries of Nubra valley.
Festival of Hundur is a chance to see the ancient culture of Hunder people. It is celebrated jointly with Diskit monastery every year. Display of Cham dance and traditional arts and sports are the highpoint of the festival.
WHERE TO STAY
Guest houses and private hotels with basic facilities are available in Hunder village. Villagers also provide homestay for nominal rent which includes food. Nubra Organic Farm is popular with those planning to go camping. Tour operators, mostly private groups, offer tented accommodation in Hunder during the high season.
WHERE TO EAT
There are a handful of restaurants that serve basic meals.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Winter is quite harsh and Ladakh remains snowbound during the season. Visiting is possible only during summer that is in the months from June to August which is the best time to visit Hundur.

IBM Corporate Services Corps Nubra Valley School Visit India
IBM Corporate Services Corps Nubra Valley School Visit India September 2009. Nubra Valley is situated about 150 km north of Leh, the capital town of Ladakh, India. Its name is derived from Ldumra (the valley of flowers). The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La from Leh where one will first encounter the Shyok Valley. To enter the Nubra valley, one must cross over the Shyok River via a small bridge and pass through a military checkpoint. Non-locals require an Inner Line permit (easily obtained in Leh town) to pass. The Sasser Pass and the famous Karakoram Pass lie to the northwest of the valley which connect Nubra with Xinjiang. Previously there was much trade passing through the area with East Turkestan and Central Asia.
Along the Nubra River lies the quaint villages of Sumur, Tigher, Tirith and Panamik. Samstanling monestery is located at the hills side between tigher and sumoor village, between them a seasonal springs flow and divide the two village. the samstanling monestery is built by lama Nima in 3 to 4 century back, while Panamik is noted for its hot springs. Across the Nubra at Panamik, is an isolated Ansa Gompa located on a hill. Most of the people are of mixed Tibetan and Central Asian origin and speak varieties of the Balti language. The Nubra valley is a fertile tract of land producing a variety of fruits and nuts.
The beautiful village of Baigdandu is located in the valley. Here one can suddenly find beautiful people boys and girls with startling blue eyes, auburn hair and ruddy cheeks as against the typical mongoloid features of the Ladakhis. Local lore has it that they were a Greek tribe who came in search of Jesus Christ's tomb and settled here. In 1948, the cease-fire line cut across the tribe, isolating Baigdandu village, a major part of the tribe was stranded on the other side. In 1971, the Ladakh Scouts liberated more areas and brought more of these people together, pushing back the Pakistanis and setting up the record of having captured the highest post in the world. Baigdandu is famous for the goats that give you the famous Pashmina shawls.
The Shyok River meets the Nubra to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and the Karakoram Ranges. Two villages accessible to tourists and foreigners in the Shyok Valley are Deskit and Hundar. Deskit is home to a busy and dramatically positioned Deskit Gompa. Hundur or Hunder(old village) was the capital of the erstwhile Nubra kingdom in the 17th century. Apple, walnut, apricot and even some rare almond trees are grown. Hundar is home to the Chamba gompha and is one of those rare places on earth where you can see in one place the splendid beauty of a desert complete with bactrian camels (two-humped), sand dunes, rolling mountains and snow peaks. Next to Hunder is Skampuk village, which is about 7km away from Hunder. Beyond Hunder village, tourists are not allowed to visits, as it is consider as border area.

What to See Around Sumur, Nubra Valley Panamik Hot Springs and Yarabtso Holy Lake
There are four main attractions in the Nubra Valley: double-hump Bactrian camels; Diskit Buddhist Monastery; Panamik Hot Springs and Yarabtso Holy Lake. Steve and I headed towards Panamik Hot Springs located only a few kilometers from Siachen Glacier. Panamik has two designated area to soak weary body parts in waters rich in sulphur; Panamik #1 and Panamik #2. Interesting to look at but not necessary to see.
Yarabtso Holy Lake is another just okay place to visit. This small lake, nestled in a mountain hollow, is considered Holy because no one knows where the water rises from. A spring? Volcanic origin? Since Travels With Sheila does not have a degree in geology, she doesn't have a clue!

Leh Ladakh Tourism Rocks :)
Statue of Maitreya Buddha at Diskit Monastery in Nubra Valley
Located at a distance of 120 km from the town of Leh is the town of Diskit which is also the headquarters of the Nubra Valley and thus attracts most of the backpackers, bikers and tourist. Diskit is situated at an altitude of 10,310 feet above sea-level and at the edge of the desert in Shyok Valley. The town was an important stopover for caravans between Tibet and China during the trade times.
Diskit is easily approachable by road from Leh. The best way to travel to the town of Diskit is to hire a jeep from Leh. The jeep ride takes around five hours from Leh, provided one leaves early in the morning thus avoid getting caught in the traffic jam near Khardung La. Shared jeeps also ply on this route on a daily basis and are a good option for solo travelers.
Buses for the Diskit leave Leh four times a week i.e. on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays from the Leh bus station. These buses return back to Leh the following morning. It is advisable to check the timing of the buses the previous day and also to reach an hour before the departure time of the bus since the buses are always over crowded. The bus journey takes around seven hours and is not one for the faint hearted.
The town of Diskit is situated just below the main road. There are two main attractions for travelersin Diskit the first is the Diskit gompa which is seen perched high up on a mountain shelf and looks very picturesque. The impressive statue of Maitreya Buddha that stands at a gigantic height of 106 feet is a huge tourist attraction in Diskit.

Nubra Valley| Ladakh vlog 2018|Backpackers Journey|
Beautiful but remote, Ladakh sits like a white gem in the green crown of Jammu and Kashmir tourism. Positioned at an altitude that ranges from 9,000 feet to 25,170 feet, Ladakh is the highest plateau in the state. Thanks to its rocky terrains, frozen trails, nomadic villages and elevated swinging passes, it spills colours and magic over tourists, especially over adventure seekers. With its unique treasure of attractions and activities, it is almost impossible to ignore this cold deserted land.
Among the several activities in Ladakh, one that lures both domestic and international tourists is camel safaris. Yes, it’s true! The camel is not confined only to the Thar Desert of Rajasthan but it has been one of the major modes of transportation in the cold desert of Ladakh for centuries now. But unlike usual single hump camels, Ladakh is popular for its double hump Bactarian camels. Camel Safari LadakhCamel safaris in Ladakh are very popular in Nubra Valley from Hundar Village to Diskit, the capital town of Nubra. Ladakh camel safari tour ends at Panamic village, another prominent village, famous for its hot sulphur springs. Travelers can enjoy this exciting safari from July to September; it takes about two hours for a single ride to complete.
While enjoying camel safari in Nubra Valley, one can comprehend what makes the rugged mountainous landscape so breathtaking. Nubra Valley is known for its spectacular natural beauty with striking apricot, apple, and orange berry orchids and barley fields on one hand and rolling sand dunes and snow-capped peaks nearby on the other hand. There are a few Gompas too among which Diskit Monastery is the most famous.
