Tomago Wetlands Restoration Project

The Water Research Laboratory (WRL) has been working with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to restore tidal flushing and create a wetland in the Kooragang Nature Reserve. Over several years WRL has been working with NPWS to develop, implement and monitor the restoration project.The wetland is being created to compensate for migratory wading bird habitat destroyed elsewhere in the lower Hunter River estuary.

Hunter Estuary Shorebird Protection program mid-term report

WetlandCare Australia is working with partners from NPWS, Hunter Bird Observers Club and Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia to improve habitat for shorebirds in the Hunter Estuary. This project is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust.

Landcare's lasting legacy at King Edward Park

The how and why of longterm landcaring with locals.

Trees In Newcastle (TIN) has been transforming an area of King Edward Park below the flower garden since 2006. The historical hill-slide area was filled and a constructed wetland installed by Newcastle City Council to improve the water quality flowing into the sea.
TIN and hundreds of locals took on the challenge to revegetate the area over a decade of National Tree Day plantings and regular landcaring events. The result is a biodiverse coastal heathland community providing refuge for local fauna and an opportunity for locals to connect with the earth.
In 2015 TIN successfully applied for a 25th Anniversary Landcare grant from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. The $20,000 went quite a long way.
The project’s achievements included
• Hosting four community events including Schools Tree Day, National Tree Day, Earth Day and a field day with the Hunter Region Landcare Network.
• Planting 1539 local native plants whose seed was collected locally and grown by TIN volunteers
• Engaging with 9 local organisations including Council, TAFE, Uni, Hunter Region Landcare Network, Newcastle High School, Happy Days.com and Friends of King Edward Park
• 1355hours of volunteer time given towards planting and maintaining the planted area
• Conducting trials of weed treatment techniques for exotic grasses and Hydrocotyle including manual removal, glyphosate, solarisation and salt & vinegar
• Student monitoring of the site with transects for species identification, photopoints for site changes and the weed treatment trials.
• A Treasure Hunt booklet for children to explore the site and
• A video case study that discusses the trials and tribulations of the landcare project.
Since the project finished in June 2016 a group of locals have been meeting regularly on the last Saturday of the month from 10am-noon to continue landcaring on the site. TIN’s facebook page is updated with the event details.
