A Guide To: The Hunterian Museum in Glasgow
The Hunterian Museum is located in the University of Glasgow campus where it's been enthralling visitors for over 200 years.
The bulk of the collection was granted to the university by William Hunter in 1783, but it didn't officially open until 1807. The collection then moved to its current location in 1870 and it has grown in size ever since.
Inside the museum you'll find exhibits from the fields of zoology, archaeology, medicine and much more, and it really is a fascinating place to walk around.
The University of Glasgow is also home to a zoology museum, the Hunterian Art Gallery and The Mackintosh House - all great Glasgow attractions, and all free to visit.

We, along with our friends at The Hunterian, have produced a new film to highlight the recent refurbishment of The Hunterian Art Gallery, the exciting collections at The Hunterian Museum and the new free guided tours at The Mackintosh House.
Founded in 1807, The Hunterian is Scotland's oldest public museum and home to one of the largest collections outside the National Museums. The Hunterian Art Gallery is home to the world's largest permanent display of the work of James McNeill Whistler and the largest single holding of the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. It also houses The Mackintosh House, the reassembled interiors from Mackintosh's Glasgow home.
Provand's Lordship, Glasgow
At Provand's Lordship you can step back into Glasgow's past in the only house to survive from the medieval city. Provand's Lordship has been extensively restored to give a real flavour of life in medieval Glasgow. This film aims to give you a flavour of this unique building and its contents.
The house was built in 1471 as part of St Nicholas's Hospital by Andrew Muirhead, Bishop of Glasgow. You can still see the bishop's coat of arms on the eastern side of the south gable. It later became the town residence of one of the canons of the cathedral chapter. This clergyman is thought to have drawn his income from the rents and taxes of Balernock, and was known as the 'Lord of the Prebend of Balernock', later corrupted to 'Lord of Provan'. The house takes its name from this title.
All the other medieval buildings that once surrounded the cathedral had been demolished by the beginning of the twentieth century. It was only through the work of the Provand's Lordship Society that the house was saved from the same fate.
The building was offered to the City of Glasgow District Council by the Provand's Lordship Society in 1978. Thanks to the donation of a fine collection of seventeenth-century Scottish furniture by Sir William Burrell, you can experience what a domestic interior of around 1700 would have looked like, as well as admiring the medieval fabric of the building.
A room on the first floor contains a display about Cuthbert Simson, a priest who lived in the house in the early sixteenth century century. Provand's Lordship stands opposite Glasgow cathedral and St Mungo Museum of Religious Life and Art.
Behind the house is the St Nicholas garden, a medical herb garden built in 1997. The garden contains medicinal plants in use in the fifteenth century, and is designed to reflect the original purpose of the house.

Glasgow is a port city on the River Clyde in Scotland's western Lowlands. It's famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th–20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Today it's a national cultural hub, home to institutions including the Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and National Theatre of Scotland, as well as acclaimed museums and a thriving music scene.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and third largest in the United Kingdom. Historically part of Lanarkshire, it is now one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. Glasgow is situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands. Inhabitants of the city are referred to as Glaswegians.
Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become the largest seaport in Britain. Expanding from the medieval bishopric and royal burgh, and the later establishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15th century, Glasgow became a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment in the 18th century. From the 18th century the city also grew as one of Great Britain's main hubs of transatlantic trade with North America and the West Indies.
With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the population and economy of Glasgow and the surrounding region expanded rapidly to become one of the world's pre-eminent centres of chemicals, textiles and engineering; most notably in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry, which produced many innovative and famous vessels. Glasgow was the Second City of the British Empire for much of the Victorian era and Edwardian period, although many cities argue the title was theirs.
Glasgow hosted the 2014 Commonwealth Games and is also well known in the sporting world for the football rivalry of the Old Firm between Celtic and Rangers. Glasgow is also known for Glasgow patter, a distinct dialect that is noted for being difficult to understand by those from outside the city.
Glasgow has a large urban transport system, mostly managed by the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). The city has many bus services; since bus deregulation almost all are provided by private operators though SPT part-funds some services. The principal bus operators within the city are: First Glasgow, McGill's Buses, Stagecoach West Scotland and Glasgow Citybus. The main bus terminal in the city is Buchanan bus station.
Glasgow has the most extensive urban rail network in the UK outside of London with rail services travelling to a large part of the West of Scotland.
