North Alabama Railfanning #13: An afternoon at the Huntsville depot (Aug. 2015)
I had meant to make it to Athens today, but a few complications had me getting there around 2 in the afternoon, so I opted to railfan at the depot.

Steam Train Adventures #14: North Alabama Railroad Museum in Huntsville, AL
Me and my roommate Steam Train Sarah travel all over looking for steam trains on display and in museums. This trip led us to the North Alabama Railroad Museum in Huntsville, AL, where we weren't exactly sure what we would find. Unfortunately there were no steam trains here, only diesels.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

SUMMARY
=======
Huntsville is a city located primarily in Madison County in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama. Huntsville is the county seat of Madison County. The city extends west into neighboring Limestone County and south into Morgan County. Huntsville's population was 180,105 as of the 2010 census. Huntsville is the third-largest city in Alabama and the largest city in the five-county Huntsville-Decatur-Albertville, AL Combined Statistical Area, which at the 2013 census estimate had a total population of 683,871. The Huntsville Metropolitan Area's population was 417,593 in 2010 to become the 2nd largest in Alabama. Huntsville metro's population reached 441,000 by 2014.It grew across nearby hills north of the Tennessee River, adding textile mills, then munitions factories, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and the United States Army Aviation and Missile Command nearby at the Redstone Arsenal. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Huntsville to its America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2010 list.
Church Street Railroad Crossing, Huntsville, AL
Signal on the left: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, 1 pair of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, a WCH mechanical bell, an Invensys Rail gate mechanism, and RECO gate lights.
Signal on the right: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, an Invensys Rail gate mechanism, and NEG gate lights.
Since my car went into and came out of the shop yesterday, I decided to head out today and see what was running on the NS in downtown. This was the first train I caught yesterday: an eastbound NS mixed freight with two Dash-9s leading an SD80MAC. You might also hear NS A81 doing some switching in the background.
For whatever reason, NS decided to replace Safetran 12x24 inch mast lights from the 1990s on the nearer cantilever signal with some new Safetran 12x20 inch lights. Not entirely sure why this was, as the rest of the crossing still remains the same, especially with the early Safetran 12x20 inch overhead lights on both signals and the pair of 1990s Safetran 12x24 inch lights on the mast of the far signal. I personally do think that the 12x24s that were on the near signal did look a bit better. The Huntsville Depot Museum (and the titular Huntsville Depot) can be seen on the left. The depot here in Huntsville was originally built by the Memphis & Charleston Railroad and housed the headquarters for their eastern division. It's also the oldest surviving depot in the state of Alabama. The Regions Bank building and a few other skyscrapers in downtown Huntsville can also be seen in the background of the shot.
Also, as a bit of a side note: NS 335 is back and is running the Macon, GA to Sheffield, AL (via Chattanooga, TN) route that it had before being abolished a few years back! NS 364 is now the eastbound counterpart for this train, so I'll have to see about catching both of them soon if possible.

Note: Google Chrome seems to have been having some issues lately where it won't play YouTube videos properly, so if this video gives you any issues, try watching it on a different browser.
A bit late in uploading this, but I've been a bit busy over the past few days, so I haven't had time to upload anything. Either way, I was mostly correct in my guess as to what the new signal would have. Certainly wasn't expecting GE Uniform Look LEDs though.
Here's how the crossing used to look:
Boxcar Moved to Turntable by Forklift at Huntsville Depot
Workers are moving a boxcar to the turntable at Huntsville Depot. As railroad videos go this isn't the most exciting one.
Huntsville's passenger depot was built in 1860. Passenger service ended in the Sixties. For many years the city operated the depot as a museum, but they have closed the museum operation in favor of using the depot for private events.
The modern roundhouse is also now used for events. This roundhouse was built originally for museum use. The Memphis & Charleston Railroad (the city's first railroad) had a roundhouse and shops on the north side of the depot, north of where the ruins of where the burned antebellum freight depot now stand.
At the start of the video you can hear a westbound coal train passing north of here.
The boxcar used to have Family Lines paint.
Highlight video of the Historic Decatur Depot!
The dramatic renovation of the Decatur Depot is a historic milestone for the city of Decatur, Alabama.
This is just a glimpse of the work during the year of progress. Thanks to supporters who made this a reality.
Looking forward to seeing the full development of the museum!

High Nose B23-7 and U23B on Huntsville & Madison County Railroad - HMCR 3986 and HMCR 9554
A Huntsville and Madison County Railroad train approaches their yard near Clinton Avenue and Woodson Street (and their interchange with NS) with a long cut of covered hoppers.
This was shot from Heart of Huntsville Drive. The crossing is the service entrance to the post office. After that you her them blowing for the Clinton Avenue crossing.
The lead locomotive is a high nose B23-7. It started out on Southern, and was there for the Norfolk Southern merger. It later was on the Pine Belt Southern Railroad and the Sequatchie Valley Railroad before coming to the HMCR.
The other locomotive is a U23B, originally L&N 2800 (and later SBD 2800). It became CSX 3301, and was later renumbered by CSX to 9554 when it was placed in maintenance of way service. It was used on the Tishomingo Railroad and then was VLIX 9554 at the Southern Appalachia Railway Museum at Oak Ridge, Tennessee before coming to the HMCR.
9554 came to HMCR to replace their failed EMD switcher. Before 9554 arrived they were using an NS switcher. 3986 came later. Both locomotives were repainted shortly after arriving. (When they arrived 3986 was in black and white NS colors and 9554 was in very worn CSX maintenance of way orange.)
The track was originally an NC&StL branch that became part of the L&N after the 1957 merger.
The locomotives are HMCR 3986 and HMCR 9554
Norfolk Southern 325 Mixed Freight Westbound Huntsville, Alabama
NS train 325 heads west in Huntsville, Alabama, just east of the Memphis & Charleston passenger depot (and the ruins of the M&C freight depot).
Winter is on the way, demonstrated by the number of liquefied propane tank cars in the train.
The elevated highway running roughly parallel to this line is I-565. The bridge that crosses the tracks is Washington Street.
The locomotives are NS 2798, NS 8701 and NS 9483.

The historic Bridgeport Depot is located along the CSX (L&N NC&STL) main in Bridgeport Alabama. The museum contains local artifacts and railroad memorabilia as well as a historical research library for Bridgeport and area history buffs.
There are records that go back to 1807, Bridgeport News issues back to 1891, post office records, tax records, business charge account ledgers, War Between the States records, genealogical and historical papers and much, much more.
The museum is open Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 until 5 p.m. Tours are free.
I believe the caboose is a ex Seaboard Coast Line M5, but I can't verify.

Huntsville, AL is saying goodbye to the Huntsville Stars AA Baseball Team. There were a lot of good memories made in that stadium. The Stars will surely be missed.
North Alabama RR Museum 2016 with must see NS train!
NS 8028 and NS 1035 pull a short NS 201 past the Chase Depot (B&A)
*originally recorded on 12-1-18*
This was FanFan61618 and I's second catch of the day on the NS. The lash-up wasn't that great, though it was an unusually short 201.
The Chase Depot is also the smallest union station in the US, having been built to allow both the Memphis & Charleston Railway (later the Southern Railway) and Nashville, Chattanooga, & St. Louis Railway (later the L&N Railroad) serve the tiny community of Chase, AL (which has since been mostly absorbed by the city of Huntsville). Part of it was because the NC&StL had to originally use trackage rights of the Memphis & Charleston to get to downtown Huntsville, as their line between here and there wasn't complete yet. The NS Memphis District East End also has the most surviving depots along the line in the state of Alabama, so I'll have to see about getting a video of all of them sometime in early 2019.
