Flaming Mountain Turpan (Tulufan) Desert Xinjiang China
Turpan has long been the centre of a fertile oasis (with water provided by the karez canal system) and an important trade centre. It was historically located along the Silk Road, at which time it was adjacent to the kingdoms of Kroran and Yanqi. The name Turfan itself however was not used until the end of the Middle Ages - its use became widespread only in the post-Mongol period.[1] The center of the region has shifted a number of times, from Yar-Khoto (Jiaohe, 10 km to the west of modern Turpan) to Qocho (Gaochang, 30 km to the southeast of Turpan), and to Turpan itself.[2] Historically, many settlements in the region have been given a number of different names, some of which refer to more than one place – Turpan/Turfan/Tulufan is one such example. (Others include Loulan/Kroran/Korla, Jushi/Gushi, Gaochang/Qocho/Karakhoja, Hezhou, and Jiaohe/Yarkhoto.)
The peoples of the Kingdoms of Nearer and Further Jushi (the Turpan Oasis and the region to the north of the mountains near modern Jimasa), were closely related. It was originally one kingdom called Gushi, which the Chinese conquered in 107 BC.[3][4] It was subdivided into two kingdoms by the Chinese in 60 BC. During the Han era the city changed hands several times between the Xiongnu and the Han, interspersed with short periods of independence.[5]
After the fall of the Han dynasty in 220, the region was virtually independent but tributary to various dynasties. Until the 5th century AD, the capital of this kingdom was Jiaohe (modern Yarghul 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Turpan).[6]
From 487 to 541 AD, Turpan was an independent Kingdom ruled by a Turkic tribe known to the Chinese as the Tiele. The Rouran Khaganate defeated the Tiele and subjugated Turpan, but soon afterwards the Rouran were destroyed by the Göktürks.

The Flaming Mountains of Turpan (火焰山)
Flaming mountain, also known as “Red Mountain”, is located in the north of Turpan in China’s northwest Xinjiang Region. The average height is 1640ft (500m), while the highest peak is around 2726 ft (831m). It is the hottest place in China with the highest temperature around 48 dC (118 dF).
It became very popular due to a classical Chinese novel, The Journey to the West by the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) writer, Wu Cheng En, and its charming hero, the Monkey King. It is described that the Monkey King stirred up trouble in Heaven and kicked off the oven for making immortal pills. Charcoals fell from the sky to where the Flaming Mountain now lies. Therefore, the mountain is hot throughout the year. Hundreds of years later, when the Monkey King escorted his master, Tang Sanzang (a famous Chinese monk in Tang Dynasty 618 - 907), to acquire Buddhist scriptures in the Western Paradise, they were interrupted by the mountain. So the Monkey King borrowed a magic palm-leaf fan to stop the flame in order to pass the mountain safe and sound.
Flaming Mountains
The Flaming Mountains have become the Turpan's most popular tourist attraction thanks to the Journey to the West, one of the four classical Chinese novels written by Wu Cheng'en. According to the novel, the Monkey King made havoc in heaven and kicked off Lord Laozi's furnace used to make immortal pills. It fell from the sky to where the Flaming Mountains lie.
The Flaming Mountains are also called Red Mountains since it is made up of red granite.

Flaming Mountains | Eggs Can Even be Roasted [Turpan / East Turkestan / China]
Flaming mountain, also called “Red Mountain”, is located in the north of Turpan in China’s northwest Xinjiang Region. It is the hottest place in China with the highest temperature around 47.8 °C (118 °F) and surface temperature over 70 °C (158 °F) in summer. Because of the high temperature, eggs can even be roasted at that time and no vegetation exists there.
Scientific explanation cites the Flaming Mountain, one branch of Tianshan Mountains, was formed in the tectonic plate movement on the earth's surface during the formation of the Himalayas 50,000,000 years ago. The spontaneous combustion of the underground coal seam makes this area hot.

Gaochang Ruins (Kingdom of Qocho), Turpan, Chana 92DC1E33 81EE 435C 9E1C F1ACF8ED3F44
The ancient city of Gaochang was built as a garrison town in the first century B.C. The nomadic Jushi people, who were native inhabitants of the territory, invited the Chinese Han dynasty to take over, giving them their allegiance. During the successive dynasties, it was ruled as Gaochang Prefecture, Gaochang Kingdom and West Prefecture. By the 14th century, the city was damaged and abandoned due to warfare between Mongolian aristocrats and Uigurs. After 2,000 years, the weather-beaten ancient city still displays its past greatness and glory even though the walls are incomplete the magnificent outline remains.

Driving in Turpan
The point of this footage is just to capture life in Turpan as it passes by from the rear passenger seat of a tour van. It's bumpy, things go by too fast, there's nothing overly spectacualr here...but I filmed it anyway because I didn't want to forget what it looked like.

The Flaming Mountains
According to the Uyghur myth, the Flaming Mountains were formed when a child-eating dragon was slain by a hero. The color of the mountains in the afternoon sun is blood-red (hence the myth). This is also the hottest and driest place in China with temperatures exceeding 130 degrees in the summer and with fewer than 16mm of precipitation per year!

The 99 Peaks Trail
Back in September 1999 a huge earthquake shook central Taiwan causing many buildings and land features to get damaged, that is exactly what happened to this mountain, a lot of the upper soil and forests came tumbling down to the bottom, leaving a rather craggy top.
Most of the area has been closed off to help the local wildlife to grow, but I followed the '99 Peaks Trail' up 'Huoyan Mountain' to see the peaks up close.

friends (some of you don't think i view you as such after hearing the idea), i had wanted to invite you to an academic lecture for my 21st birthday. i have reduced that to a 3min rant by a seemingly-not-but-very-sober me videoed at Flaming Mountains, Turpan, Xinjiang, China, to be disseminated online. language: mainly mandarin spoken hysterically.
