Exploring Huron County: Goderich Day One | Ontario Travel Vlog
Rather than booking another flight to Europe I decided to spend some time exploring closer to home.
I have a few upcoming trips planned here in Canada and the United States and my first trip was over to Huron County where I spent some time visiting the different small towns along Lake Huron.
The first stop was Goderich, a small town in Southwestern Ontario where I spent four days exploring and learning more about the history of the area.
Goderich became well known in 2011 because of the tornado that destroyed the town and it's also known as the “prettiest small town in Canada”.
I definitely agree and Goderich has a very different vibe to it compared to many of the other small towns that I’ve been to. I really like the unique layout of the downtown center area and its location right on Lake Huron provides plenty of opportunity for spending time outdoors and taking advantage of some of the best that nature has to offer.
During my trip to Goderich I visited the following shops, stores, and other attractions that I would recommend checking out if you’re planning a visit:
Cait’s Cafe
Escape Room Goderich
Culberts Bakery
West Street Willy’s
Cravings Ice Cream
Huron County Museum and Historic Gaol
For accommodation, I’d recommend staying at the Hotel Samuels if you’re looking for something a little more upscale and boutique or the Benmiller Inn & Spa if you’re looking for something laid back a little more relaxing.

Huron Country Gaol Investigation in Goderich Ontario
CPI Investigate the historic Huron County Gaol located in Goderich Ontario Canada.
The Huron Historic Gaol was established as the Huron County Gaol (Jail) for Upper Canada's Huron District. Clearing of the land began in Goderich, Ontario in 1839 and the jail was constructed between 1839 and 1842 using stone from the Maitland River Valley and from Michigan. The octagonal jail was designed by Thomas Young, modelled after Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon design for prison construction, common in mid-19th century Britain and North America.
A temporary courtroom and Council Chambers were set up on the jail’s third floor. It was in this makeshift Council Chamber that the first Huron District Council meeting was held on February 8, 1842. The third floor was also used for church services and other public gatherings before proper buildings were available.
The site ceased functioning as a jail serving Huron County in 1972 and inmates were then transferred to Walkerton and Stratford jails. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1973.

Another Day in Goderich: Ontario Travel Vlog
Spent the day exploring the historic town of Goderich in Huron County, Ontario.
Started the day off with a quick stop to the beach then made my way back into town.
Visited the Huron County Museum, explored the Historic Huron Gaol, then went for a little hike around the Menesetung Bridge.
There's definitely quite a lot to do in Goderich and in the surrounding area and I'd recommend visiting if you're looking for a quick city break and you still want to explore somewhere close by here in Southern Ontario!
For accommodation, I’d recommend staying at the Hotel Samuels if you’re looking for something a little more upscale and boutique or the Benmiller Inn & Spa if you’re looking for something laid back a little more relaxing.

Goderich
This is a video edit of 3 different flights taken over the summer of 2016. The lake beside this pretty little town of Goderich is Lake Huron. The walled court yard building you see in the middle of the video was an old jail at one time. It was named the Goderich Gaol and was put into service in 1842. It is now a museum.
The Neutral People (The Attawandaron): History, Affiliations & Culture
This is a collection of words, photos and video clips about ..
The Neutral Peoples.., their culture, background & affiliations
--------------------------------------------------
The Neutral Confederacy, or, Neutral Nation,, or, Neutral People are an Iroquoian-speaking North American Indigenous People who lived near the northern shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, on the west side of the Niagara River, west of the Tabacco Nation.
They are related to the Iroquois Confederation to their southeast, the Huron Peoples also living around Lake Ontario., the Erie People of the south shore of Lake Erie, the Tabacco People situated east of Lake Erie and the Susquehannocks of Central Pennsylvania.
During the late 16th and early 17th centuries, the territory of the Attawandaron, as they were called by the Huron Nation, was mostly within the limits of present-day southern Ontario.
The Museum of Ontario Archaeology summarizes that territory as follows: ..”They inhabited dozens of villages in Southwestern Ontario, stretching along the north shore of Lake Erie from the Niagara Peninsula, to the Detroit River, perhaps as far north as Toronto, in the east and Goderich, in the west.

Behind-The-Scenes of Ontario Fish
It's a 12 hour day for these Lake Ontario fishermen, who are up at 2 or 3 in the morning to cast their nets.
Presteve Foods makes a wide variety of fresh fish found in the Great Lakes available to your family. Types of fish harvested daily range from the familiar perch and pickerel to the less well-known white fish, lake smelt, white bass and white perch.
Ulysses Pratas, Presteve Foods
We are a vertically integrated, fresh water fish company. What that means is that we actually catch the fish, process the fish, sell the fish and distribute the fish.
Narrator:
Their harvest is in the neighbourhood of 10-to-11 million pounds of fish each year. It's a sustainable approach that is provincially monitored.
Ulysses Pratas, Presteve Foods
I think the opportunity that the Great Lakes give us to the Ontario and the national market is such that it's basically a local product. I have a lot of pride when I walk into a supermarket in Canada and we see yellow perch and pickerel that are produced in Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Superior.
Narrator:
Presteve Foods distributes to independent wholesalers, food service, retailers and institutions. Find their fish in your grocery store and cook up a little piece of Ontario tonight.
